Description
My Entry to the Tomb Raider contest. I wanted to focus on more of the game as a whole, something that tells a story. Something you wouldn't mind hanging on your wall. So I looked at all the screenshots and came up with this. Good luck everyone! Since there's still time before the deadline I might tweak this some more..Created with ArtRage 4

Beautiful. You really seem to understand Artrage 4 better than most folks. I, myself, am in the process of learning all its tricks. Any tips for getting the best out of the program? Seems like the oil paint tool is the fan favorite.

Thank you, actually I tend to use the airbrush,watercolor, pastel,ink pen and sticker tool the most. If you adjust the settings on your airbrush by increasing the hardness and lowering the opacity and pressure it creates the perfect painting tool in my opinion.
The only time I use the oil brush is if it's thinned, try setting the pressure to 50%, thinners to 88% and loading to 100 and you'll see what I mean. It creates a "build up" effect as you paint, the default settings puts way too much paint and either digs into your paint or creates undesirable impasto.
Try adding a new layer, adjusting the layer's texture setting to use "cel", then use your watercolor brush on that layer. I love that tool because it picks up the color underneath and blends, if your paint gets too washed add another layer and keep adding. I used this process on Lara's face to get the smooth painterly areas and blood/smudges.
I use the art brushes in the sticker tool a lot for texturing but if you play around with the settings you can actually mimic brushes you're familiar with in programs such as Photoshop. Here's a nice tutorial on custom brushes in ArtRage, [link] if you follow the basic guidelines you can start customizing your own brush to do some really unique stuff.
There's more to this program than people give it credit for, it's pretty powerful if you spend time in it. Hope this helps

I agree; ArtRage is a powerful program that's a bit underrated. It just takes a bit patience. I mainly use the pen, pencil, watercolour, and oil paint tool (with plenty of thinner. The thick pigments are a pain to blend, as you already know.) I currently have trouble painting flesh tones and textures, but I'm sure I'll get there, especially since you gave such great tips. Book cover! Certainly something that could do well as merchandise design. Or as others have said, a poster-ad for Tomb Raider - The Movie. and as for Lara's characterization, I'd say spot on. A recent deeply traumatic experience that brings forth the necessary savageness of a survivor. Looks like she could say something along the line of 'Them or me...? Definitely them.'

This is absolutely amazing. Really love the way you considered the space for everything, gives it that extra feeling of tension and excitement. (It goes without saying that your way of painting and highlights and shading are excellent) Always enjoy looking at art like this!
