Description Showing the gape of Allosaurus, based on Bakker 1998, link to a PDF below:

Bakker, Robert T. (1998). "Brontosaur killers: Late Jurassic allosaurids as sabre-tooth cat analogues". Gaia 15: 145–158.

www.mnhn.ul.pt/geologia/gaia/1…

This looks really wide but, if Bakker is correct, this is apparently how wide some specimens could open their mouths. Crazy!

Update 15/05/11: Just tweaked the proportions a bit to better match the diagrams in the paper.

They say that the Indominus Rex from Jurassic World opens it's mouth up to 90% due to snake DNA, but if that's right, Allosaurus DNA seems more plaussible

This is great and thanks for the Bakker link. I once saw Allosaur referred to as a hatchet head. If you look at the Allosaur head straight on (like at a museum) it is amazing how narrow it is. There's a lot of teeth packed into that small area.

They opened their mouths that wide and used their necks like a hatchet to ram the jaws into the flesh of prey. Sice allosaurus had a bite weaker than a lions.

For what it's worth not all Allosaurus specimens could open their mouths this wide.

Thanks and thanks for the fav, it's the gape of the ones called 'creaosaur allosaur' which most people think of as Allosaurus fragillis anyway. To me it looks a bit weird, (though cool) but hay.

Also your gallery is truly awesome, your an excellent illustrator!

Brad-ysaurus [2007-10-17 06:14:24 +0000 UTC]

Weird. It's not just the wide gape, it's that the upper jaw seems displaced upwards, in addition to the lower jaw being displaced downwards. How does this affect the articulation between the braincase and the neck?

Steveoc86 In reply to Brad-ysaurus [2007-10-17 09:44:11 +0000 UTC]

Thats what I thought, If you have adobe Reader cheek the link to the PDF file, its based of FIG 6. Not all specimens could open this wide, only the ones Bakker calls creosaur style allosaurid. Most peple classify those as allosaurus. I think it used to be classsifed it as Allosaurus atrox but know Its thought to a variation of A. fragilis. There seems to be alot of mobility were the neck and head join, so what you see here is the head rotated up I asume to the maximum. Aparently Rayfield (2001) came to similar conclusions, but I havn't read it.
