Description
Ornitholestes... apparently. Without the nasal horn, it looks really generic… it could basically be any feathered theropod.
Pencil drawing base and extensive photoshop editing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: This image has changed several times throughout the years. Many of the comments below refer to older versions.
[This description refers to the original submission back in 2007. Which can be seen here: sta.sh/01966feg2z6m]
The original drawing this is based on is just a glorified scribble from the corner of an A4 piece of paper. For some reason (beyond human comprehension), I thought I'd scan it and do it up in photoshop.
At some point during editing, I shrank the original scan to ~800 px to see what it would look like downsampled for the web... and I stupidly forgot to revert to the large resolution version and carried on editing.
I don't know how I didn't notice, but I had edited just enough that I couldn't go back in the history to revert, and I couldn't be bothered to redo all the edits I had made. So I expanded back up in photoshop to the original scan size of ~3000 px. That is why it looks a bit soft and funny.
Update: I updated the illustration to include lips at some point (I don't remember the date).
Update 01/09/2013: Some have commented on me referring to this as a 'Scribble'. It started as a small sketch in the corner of a piece of paper; the original is about ~10cm by ~10cm. Being so small, it limits detail.
The 2007 scan, which as you can see here, if fairly crude: sta.sh/0dv8yu5puvm
Usually, I would have drawn a larger image for a DA submission. However, over time this has become modified extensively in photoshop, so it is not really a scribble anymore.
Update 05/09/2014: Improvements to the feathering and rendering.
The 2014 version can be found here: steveoc86.deviantart.com/art/O…
Update:18/08/2017: This is a fairly significant update. The background has changed to include vegetation, and I have tried to emulate the backlit look. The overall feel is different and slightly more realistic.

It started of as a small drawing on the corner of a piece of paper. Over time it's been modified in photoshop. I might update the description to relflect that. I actually have a newer version I need to finnish and upload.

You're right, it does look weird without the horn. Still, it looks fantastic! Wish I could draw like that. :c

Thank you for the many favs and the comment! In fairness this isn't a 100% pencil drawing, some parts were photoshoped; mainly to correct some things.

You know recent studies show that ornitholestes didn't actually have a horn on its nose, so your drawing is actually quite accurate.

Thanks. I know about the nose horn, that's why I didn't put one on.
These days I wouldn't have put scales on the head and would put feathers running down the to the snoat.

The quality is great...my pencil sketches are infinitely more scrappy. Nice work.

That must be a really nice glorified scribble then. It's nice! Especially the lighting.
