Can you please make a quick and small tutorial on how to make it? I really like this

The super honest answer is no, not a quick and small one - but that isn't necessarily to say I won't!

To be honest though even after a lot of revisions it doesn't always run very smoothly, it's very much a work in progress - it may even be that a mechanism like this is just never going to work right in Lego.

Were you just after an explanation of the mechanism, or were you thinking more full instructions?

More of instructions because I watched the video you posted

This is amazing!  How long did it take to build this?! It would be cool to see more lego arthropods like this!

Stevolteon In reply to Ceratopsia [2016-03-19 23:00:07 +0000 UTC]

Not as long as you might think - two days of solid slog to figure out a single body segment which could then be replicated, then around a week pulling the head and tail together.

THEN it was improved over a period of months, mostly trying to make the mechanism more reliable. Even now I consider it a work in progress!

that's amazing, how did you make the legs move?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stevolteon In reply to EmporerXur [2014-10-25 22:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Basically a continuous axle runs the whole length driven by motors in the head and tail. It has 28 identical sections each with 4 legs run off a single gear by means of offset cams.

Right now I'm in the middle of updating it for a show (hopefully getting it down to just one motor in the head) but when I get a chance I'll upload some pics of the workings.

Cheers! That was kind of the starting point, I'd been experimenting with curving walls to make interesting "un-Lego-y" shapes and it all led here!

That's why it's so fun to take to shows, I have it sat there motionless until a crowd gathers and then crank it up. The reactions are priceless!

As someone who has studied the real (fossil) thing, I have to say that this is fantastic! If you really want to get it right, take away one pair of legs from the first three segments of the body as in modern millipedes.

Stevolteon In reply to wilsonhm [2014-08-08 21:56:19 +0000 UTC]

It might receive a rework at some point, the head was a bit of a rush job and the colouration would benefit from a few tweaks, so I'll definitely bear that in mind, thanks!

A quick estimate puts it at around the 5000 piece mark. Certainly 4312 for the body - 28 identical modules composed of 154 pieces each.
