tw for dermatillomania, verbal abuse and bad words
“You...what?” Moondancer murmured as she glanced over the suitcases and bags on the table. The luggage hadn’t even been there for a week, and now Starlight was planning to leave again.
“Yes, I found the perfect way to get back at Twilight, and improve our lives,” Starlight squealed as she neatly refolded her clothing for a fifth time. “I’m so excited! And you’ll love it too!”
“Why are you taking Vendetta, then?” Moondancer’s voice was barely above a whisper, and she absent-mindedly started pulling the fuzz out of the collar of her sweater. Her hands were getting dangerously close to the fur on her neck where a bald patch had formed from all of her nervous picking while her wife was away.
“She’s part of the plan, of course.”
“What plan?”
“I already told you. Twilight has this perfect daughter: smart, knows how to use magic, attentive, obedient… we’re going to switch her and Vendetta, so we can finally get some peace and Twilight gets the suffering she deserves.”
The yellow unicorn’s eyes slowly drifted over to Starlight’s… and for the first time, the purple unicorn felt unease under her wife’s newfound intimidating gaze.
“You...weren’t joking?” Moondancer asked, her voice raising ever so slightly to make sure her incoming rage carried to her wife’s ears.
But Starlight had to keep her ground. She scoffed and continued to fold.
“Why would I? I’ve been planning this since before I came home. It’s a pretty complicated spell, obviously, but luckily Twilight had enough material to cross reference--”
Moondancer slammed down the top of the suitcase, barely giving Starlight enough time to yank her hands back so her fingers didn’t get crushed.
“What the hell--?!”
“You are NOT replacing our daughter!” the yellow unicorn snapped and started scratching at her neck with her free hand while the other kept the suitcase firmly shut. “If you think I’m letting you leave this house again--much less with our child--for such nefarious reasons, you are WRONG!”
Starlight, while taken aback by this behavior, felt a rage bubble inside her. Moondancer was there for her through everything, and had always waited patiently for her return. What was the big deal? Not to mention they had done much worse things such as: running a cult, evading arrest, creating less than ethical spells… but THIS was crossing the line?
“Listen to yourself, Moondancer,” Starlight calmly began, and crossed her arms. “You hate Twilight as much as I do. Don’t you think she deserves to struggle for once, feel the pain of having a child that just isn’t what you wanted? Struggling day in and day out with Vendetta’s lack of attention, her silly delusions, her wild imagination… Twilight has always gotten everything she’s ever wanted. But I want her daughter. So that’s what I’m going to get.”
“You admitting that we even need Twilight’s daughter in order to succeed is saying that we’ve failed,” Moondancer hissed and started to pull at her own mane in frustration. “Do you need to piggyback off Twilight that badly? Not to mention that Vendetta isn’t a lost cause, she isn’t as horrible as you make her out to be.”
“She is.”
“And who’s fault is that?”
Starlight flinched again, not because she was offended, but because Moon had the audacity to accuse her of something. She placed her hands on her hips and had to restrain herself from scuffing her hoof on the floor. Remain calm...and you’ll win.
“My fault? You’re saying her instability is MY fault? Look at you. You’re tearing out your own mane, you can’t even survive without me. Vendetta told me she had to cook for you on some days, and on others you wouldn’t even get out of bed. But I’M the unstable one? Are you afraid of being alone? Or are you more scared that once I give Vendetta away, you’ll be the only crazy pony left in this household? In fact, I should’ve never left her with you in the first place. You barely kept her alive while I was gone, much less yourself.”
The sound of tearing ripped through the air, as well as a lock of Moondancer’s mane. “You’re joking,” she whispered, and grit her teeth so tightly that Starlight could’ve sworn she heard a crack. She clutched the hair she had torn with a python grip. Her voice was now deep and seething with fury that had been festering every day that Starlight had been gone. She could feel every moon she had gone without seeing the wife she missed so dearly, a wife she perhaps depended on. Such infrequent visits, and yet she treated her like this while planning to leave with the child who had stuck by her side?
“You’re fucking joking. Do you hear yourself?! Have you NO shame, no empathy, no nothing?! It doesn’t matter if Vendetta is crazy, it doesn’t matter if I’M crazy or where she gets it from! She’s OUR DAUGHTER! No one else’s! And no way in Tartarus am I giving her to Twilight, especially not under the premise that she would make her suffer! Everyday that you have been gone, Vendetta and I have bonded--something YOU never bothered to do with her because it was too much of a hassle! You’re the one who’s crazy if you think I’d be so irresponsible as to let you take her away from us, from me!”
Starlight could feel her fur prickling with animosity. She disliked many things, but the thing she hated the most was resistance. So she took a deep breath to calm herself down, to remember to take the reins, to remind herself that she was still in control.
“Moondancer...you’re right,” she sighed and took a step forward, which made Moondancer step back. “She is ours...but look at her. We’ve been doing such a terrible job raising her, and while yes, as our daughter she should be this great magnificent thing...she’s not. Not because she’s crazy, but because we can’t provide her with what she needs. Yes, you love her, and I’ve been tough on her, it’s true…”
Another step closer. Another step back.
“But love isn’t enough. This house isn’t enough. We just...aren’t enough for her. Do you know how hard it’s been thinking about this, giving our child to our greatest enemy…? But I want what’s best for Vendetta."
Another step...but Moondancer didn’t step back this time.
“Even if it’s not what we want, it’s what Vendetta needs. She’ll have friends, she’ll get fresh grass, maybe Twilight can even help her learn how to control her magic… don’t you want what’s best for our daughter?”
Moondancer was sniffling and weakly pinching the folds of her sweater, feeling naked in the face of all her insecurities. Not being a good enough mother, knowing that Twilight would be better--hell, she would probably be the best candidate for setting Vendetta on track. She was the Princess of Friendship and the Element of Magic. Two things that Vendetta sorely needed in life. And they were just outlaws, unfit to take care of a special needs child like her… but to let her go…
“It’s not admitting defeat,” Starlight whispered and held her wife’s hands. “It’s okay. I didn’t want to do this either. Most of all...I don’t want to leave you again.”
That was enough. Moondancer burst into sobs, completely broken and reduced to her ugly wailing. Months of emotions all came spilling out of her eyes and nose, not helped by the tight embrace of Starlight. “It’s okay, love...it’s okay…”
“Please...S-Starlight…” the yellow unicorn choked and desperately gripped the back of Starlight’s shirt. “Please...bring Vendetta b-back after you take her...I-I...don’t know how much more I can take…”
“Of course, baby…” Starlight rubbed warm circles into Moondancer’s back as she continued to cry. But the purple one was smirking to herself at a job well done. Moondancer was of course very important to her, her ideas and magical knowledge were unparalleled to even Twilight sometimes, so whenever she got irrationally emotional like this, it was a bother… But now she was calm, and she had her permission. All was well.
And I can move forward with my plan...uninterrupted.
