the only thing i "trace" per say are photographs. i learn a lot about anatomy that way and it helps me develop my crap-tastic style. Granted, i don't do it anymore because i'm too lazy to browse the web to find refs...
but yes, tracing things like that is just...ergh >.<

I'm not against tracing, as long you are brave enough to admit it. I think you can learn alot from tracing, I did it too when I was younger, it helped me to see the proportions. But now I don't trace anymore, I have drawing lessons so I can draw perfectly by myself now. Step by step ^^
But the poster is right, you're not drawing when you are tracing

Who would make fun of someone for not tracing?
Kids at school say "Who would draw? It's too hard! Try tracing!"
And some kids feed into the BS.

Hey, tracing isn't that bad. Granted, if you're, like, 16 and still tracing, yeah, you need more practice, but all the tracing I did as a kid really helped give me what little skill I have now.

At most, it's a good way to get a nice picture easily to practice coloring. But your mind won't remember anything you trace.

Now I get what tracing is c:
I haven't done that since first grade though...
But on the other hand... it is sorta how my teacher learned us hiragana, katakana and kanji... we where given paper with the letters and asked to draw atop of them... Which makes me guilty till today and the rest of the year

it's all part of a learning process. it depends if its copywrite, it depends on a number of things. i've traced things. i'm sure you have too.

I think tracing is a good start to help some people if they don't understand how to do it right. Later on if they get the hang of it then they should start doing everything else on their own.
Other than that, my case I'll only trace if it's my own artwork if I make a mistake and I don't want to waste my time doing everything all over again. It makes life so much more easier ^^
But your right, it's art theft if you already have the ability to do it on your own :/

It sucks when other people recognize tracers as better "artists" than the originals. I experienced it myself. I remember one time my brother was like "look at this guy's drawings, awesome right?" commenting about a killua traced "artwork" done through a graphing paper. While here I am practicing as hard as I can to come up with decent art and he doesn't even notice my improvements at all D: I guess when people draw familiar characters they tend to acquire more attention than original ones.
Not that I'm saying tracing is bad or anything, I just don't see how anyone could call it impressive when all you did was to come up with a hand-drawn photocopy.
tl;dr tracing isn't something people should call a "skill" imo. Also lol @ pic

i agree, tracing isn't real art, it isn't even your style, why copy someone elses?
i sometimes use my previous artwork as references, mainly when i have a new character and am still trying to remember how to draw them, or if i simplyneed a refresher. lol

This is a great visual to go along with the argument against tracing. I can't understand how people can trace something, change a few things and say, "look! I has original artwork!" Disgusting. It really undermines real artists, too. I've been going through hell lately as the head of Artist Alley for an anime con. Ever since I had a personal incident with art theft I've been almost paranoid about having someone in our AA who's selling crap like traced art or screen shot vectors. I'm not as familiar with most of the newer anime series, so I'm not as savvy and up to date as I should be. I want to trust people applying for an art booth and believe that they are really artists, not just scam artists. And seriously, tracing the work of someone else and selling it is a scam. Like a bootleg DVD. It's not real! Any suggestions to help me curb any possible issues I may have with tracing? Also, I really love this poster! Definitely an instant

Even when i was younger and everyone was tracing drawings so that, according to the teacher, they would "learn how to draw", i distased it
I think i only did it once or twice in my entire life...and that was when i was really young...
Even if i use someones else art,and draw over it , i never declare it as my own original idea.
Theres no point in doing so.

I completely agree! Your teacher made you guys trace stuff to 'learn how to draw"... seriously? My art teacher would have broken my fingers if I traced anything. It's good that you've got the right idea, especially despite being taught it was okay. KUDOS! ^_-

Well it was when we were all super young so i guess the teacher thought it was ok.. then again i did the mistake later on to draw cool things on tracing paper so i was made fun of tracing them when in fact i was simply copying them XD

wow, you're really against tracing, aren't you..
I have a question, Is it tracing if I look at something and draw it by eye, just for practice? Not going to post it up though, unless I have permission from the original artist.

PhoenixGR In reply to Jiriyen [2010-07-05 13:00:33 +0000 UTC]
theres nothing wrong with that,i used to do it (and still do it) all the time
And if i had to ask for permission i would have to ask a whole lotta artist's LOL
so dont worry

as long as you don't put a sheet of paper over top of a drawing and trace the lines of the picture (as seen above ), i'm pretty sure it's not considered tracing ^_^ that's more considered referencing.
referencing is encouraged, but if you're gonna take a picture and copy it line for line (without tracing)...yeah, you might want the artist's permission
