Description I don't ship Zutara, though I can understand the appeal, but more prudent to hand is the political consequences of such a pairing. Something butterflies, a word said or unsaid, and Katara ends up with Zuko. This, understandably, alienates Aang to both of them. For one reason or another, he grows closer with Toph, and a relationship forms. Due to the aforementioned split, Aang never drops his support of the Harmony Restoration Movement. The Fire Nation Colonies still go independent, though in a bloodier process, and is still very much an offshoot of the Fire Nation. While cementing the collapse of Team Avatar, this has dire consequences still: Earth King Kuei overextends himself, still new to power, and one thing leads to another: the Earth Kingdom comes crashing down on itself (People blame Korra for this in canon! The thing poisoned itself long ago!). A surviving royal family member takes a rump state around Chameleon Bay, and Omashu goes it alone. Toph eventually inherits the Beifong estate, and with it its heavy influence over Gaoling. Aang and Toph are married, and the Air Nomad territories and parts of the former Earth Kingdom swear to them. Elsewhere, with the marriage of Zuko and Katara, the Fire Nation and Southern Water Tribe join in personal union after Sokka's death without a viable heir. This sets the Northern Tribe along a more nationalistic path, and eventually the fascistic Sons of Yue reform the nation into a fiercely revanchist entity (rumours even suggest that they've found a way to utilise dark spirits for some nefarious end). The Sons are quieter about their convictions when dealing in geopolitics, and even support a few Earth statelets to dampen the louder accusations of waterbender supremacism. Kyoshi Island annexed Chin Province, and is now nothing short of an Avatar Kyoshi cult of personality. Across the remaining stretches of the Earth Continent, the People's Empire reigns - fans of both Fidel Castro and, to a lesser extent than the man himself, Amon. As all know, absolutely nothing untoward is being visited upon the Sandbenders.

The two royal families watch each other from across the seas. The lines of Aang and Zuko, Toph and Katara, one bending air and earth, the other fire and water. Life is tense, but has been stable for some years.

Until one day, forty-seven years, three weeks and a day since Ozai lost his bending at the Battle of Wulong Forest, Avatar Aang, an embittered old man, under the strain of the chaos of his life, passes away in his sleep. Raava slips away to a place emotionally significant to him, as she has likely done with the past Avatars, and finds herself inhabiting the newborn granddaughter of Zuko and Katara.

The next few decades will be most conflicted indeed.
