Prompt: Draw ponies experiencing your perfect idea for an episode / Draw a pony with a brilliant idea

Ahhhh this one took forever.

Okay so, this is a headcanon/plot idea I've had in my head for a while and figured it would make for a cool episode! In Between Dark and Dawn, Celestia and Luna canonically gave Twilight an amulet with some of their sun/moon powers inside it, and switches between a sun and moon motif for whichever one she's using. I always found it odd that she was able to control both of them (even with the training she had) because its not her main talent and she has to do both, whereas Celestia could only control the moon for 1000 years and couldn't do anything about dream walking (I'm assuming). So I think that after a while, maybe a year or so, Twilight is beginning to struggle with controlling the sun and moon and is getting weaker. She doesn't want to tell the retired Princesses, but they find out somehow. Celestia is horrified, feeling guilty for putting that on her student and immediately says they'll come out of retirement to take over their duties again. Twilight says absolutely not, they earned their retirement. She feels like she can probably take over the moon as she feels a stronger connection with it, given her cutie mark. Was there someone else who could handle the sun alongside her, like Starswirl? But it turns out with all his powers, even he cannot handle the entire star. Celestia and Luna glance at each other and say "Well, there is one pony who might be able to handle it..."

Turns out Sunset also got her cutie mark at the Summer Sun Celebration, a few years before Twilight. Celestia was raising the sun when she suddenly felt a tug, and then the star felt a little lighter in her grasp. She gasped and opened her eyes, and saw the tiniest filly struggling, eyes clenched tight as her horn glowed teal. It was only for a moment, and then the filly let go with a small cry, unable to handle the power. In the middle of the crowd her flank lit up and her multicolored sun mark appeared. Celestia, scarcely able to believe it had really happened, had shepherded Sunset off to her school of magic, where she was made her personal student. She had hoped this pony would be the one to take over the Elements and defeat Nightmare Moon, until the girl rebelled and ran off inside the magic mirror.

They inform Twilight that Sunset may be the only one who can possibly help. Twilight is reluctant - while they converse often, Sunset has her own life in a whole other universe...and sometimes Twilight wants her to come back a little too badly. It feels selfish. But her desire to keep Celestia and Luna from coming out of retirement makes her write to Sunset and request a meeting in the human world. While there, they talk and she finds out Sunset has been extremely bored since graduation. She can't seem to find something that holds her interest, and the other girls have scattered, off to find their destinies in the surprisingly large human world. They keep in touch, but it's not like in Equestria where everyone lives fairly near to each other and their jobs aren't a strict 9-5. Twilight hesitantly brings up what's going on, and Sunset's face goes still. "I'll have to think about it."

It takes a few days, and Twilight is getting weaker every time she performs the spell, until Sunset suddenly writes to say she'll do it. She has gone to everyone important to her in the human world and said her goodbyes, and she's ready to move back home. It's hard for a while as she has to be trained by Celestia to handle the sun, and it feels a little like before. She gets easily frustrated and snappy, not used to magic or four legs, for that matter. But she and Twilight talk it out, and she promises that she wanted to do this, she's just not handling everything well. They grow closer by the day and eventually the amulet is split and set into regalia for the each of them. Sunset primarily wears the sun side while Twilight the moon, though they discover they would prefer to switch days and nights every month so that no one becomes resentful or bored of their duties. For one month Twilight will dream walk while Sunset takes care of the daily duties (along with help from the rest of the mane 5 & Spike), and then the next month Sunset will dream walk after lowering the sun for sunset and Twilight will take care of the daily duties after lowering the moon for dawn.

It's all going swimmingly until they realize they have feelings for each other, and then I like to think there's some fun misunderstanding or drama while they figure it out. Cue lots of ribbing from the rest of the girls and much blushing on their part. When they do get together, they become THE MOST POWERFUL COUPLE IN EQUESTRIA AND LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER (literally). They do eventually grow into their royal selves - Twilight's hair becomes more space-y (maybe similar to the northern lights?) while Sunset's resembles fire.

EDIT: I forgot to talk about Sunset's wings! I headcanon that she got them after becoming Daydream Shimmer because she was able to master all the elements herself, but then Forgotten Friendship happened and she didn't have them. Maybe because they were naturally earned wings rather than given by Celestia (NOT that Twilight didn't earn them, but that this is a different kind of magic) they grew slowly and of course she didn't notice the whole time because she was a human most of the time. So when she shows up in Equestria again she's shocked that she has wings and has to have Celestia explain the ancient magic at work (the perfect excuse for everything) and that's also why she has a hard time adjusting.

Woo, that was a moutful! TLDR; Twilight can't handle raising both the sun and moon so Sunset comes back and takes over the sun by splitting up the amulet from Between Dark and Dawn, they get together and live happily ever after. This may have to be a whole season rather than one episode. Whoops.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! I don't really write fanfics anymore, but I like to write outlines of my ideas so the details don't become huge and paralyze me. Sometimes they can be just as long, though.
