Some people have asked how Victory Fire is made, so Maggs has put together some progress shots. Color with MS Paint is a bit more complicated than lineart but we will try to get a decent coloring walkthrough up at some point.VF is not always 100% MSPaint, often there are glow effects or transparency which require Photoshop, and unfortunately the lettering has to be done in Photoshop these days as the Windows7 version of Paint absolutely wrecked the text tool. Maggs does not use any of the new "brushes" in MSPaint as they are all horrible, tools are the Pencil at 1 or 2 size, Eraser/Color Eraser and rarely the Airbrush (seen in the snow pages in book 1). For the most part there is not much cheating or fancy effects in VF, everything is done by hand.

You've done comics outside of MS Paint by now, I know. Β I'd like to know: is the process significantly different? Β I may want to steal your methods for personal pleasure, and I don't exactly want to use MS Cancer if I make a comic myself.

What processes are we talking about? Drawing and painting techniques, yes obviously, that's dependent on the medium you use. Processes specific to comics? There are exceptions but I think most comics people follow the same steps no matter what medium they're using: you first plan out your layout/panels with thumbnails, then do your rough sketch, then pencils/clean sketch stage, then inking/lineart, then color. If manga, skip color stage and apply tones instead.

I mean, would I be able to use this as an effective reference for comicking myself if I were to use, say, GIMP instead of Paint? Β Obviously, I wouldn't have to use separate copies of line art and I wouldn't need to do the layer work-arounds, but are the concepts like dithering and shading that you discuss still useful?

Well, for one, you don't need to dither when you've got access to blending tools! You might be better off looking up some GIMP-specific painting tutorials.

why have you decided to create this comic all with Paint?

A very very VERY long time ago (before fourth gen existed, that long!) the original idea was to make a parody comic poking fun at some then-common tropes in PMD fanstuff. I was used to using MSPaint for pixel art, so I started doing it in that to show up the folks on Serebii forums who kept complaining they couldn't do anything good because all they had access to was Paint.

VF has long moved past these days, the original comic was canned for several years, then we had another go reducing the dorky parody/riffing stuff, then we finally removed all of that and made it a serious story, which is the incarnation we have now. But, the MSPaint survived, because I got too used to drawing in MSPaint and now I can't seem to get away from it. The tests I've tried in Photoshop and Sai have not looked as good (mainly because I SUCK at lineart unless it's treated like pixel art), so I think we're stuck with Paint unless I want to put everyone through an uncomfortable art adjustment period.

I'm very happy to see a comics made in this way, with an unique style, a nice story and lovely characters (which I like very much) and I think that with your idea to create a comics with an apparently simple tool like MS Paint, trying to remove from most of the people's mind their useless things that βthey can't do anythingβ ..
it's ABSOLUTELY fantastic and in no case βshallowβ.
You must continue with this thought!
Also I'm glad to see that art and comics can be express in so many ways.

I remember when I used to draw in MS paint... it was a really old version and I just drew with a mouse

I can't believe you use Paint, although maybe it's better these days than when I last used it many years ago. I'm pretty sure GIMP (or maybe even Photoshop) would be better because you can put the panels, rough sketch and clean sketch on separate layers.

You can download a version of the old MS Paint, and it still works with Windows7. I have a few friends who've done it

Oh man I was wanting to know how you guys make your comics in MS paint, I never actually got to use it I just heard it really hard to use that program. Anyway this is really cool and you gave the information very clearly

There is not enough MS painters these days, everybody assumes it's terrible for art.

yeah pretty much, i really dont know how big my pics are gonna be, but hey i never post any of my hand drawings, so i guess it doesnt really matter
