Description
EDIT: Fixed the eyes bleedy colours. It's a rough fix but I hadn't realised just how bad it was on my other monitor...Some important things to note:
- Sai has no text tool. Sorry bout the handwriting! It's messy I know o_o
- This is how I paint, not necessarily how you should. I did it to show how I go about things in the hope it would help!
- To do this sort of thing with lineart the process is nearly identical, I just don't blend all of the sketch when I'm shading. I also clean it up a bit with a thin Middle_Flat brush as I go which makes it less solid but I think more interesting.
- I get a lot of my technique from *purplekecleon who inspired me to try Sai in the first place. She has a speedpaint tutorial (first below) and a colour theory tutorial (second below) which I highly reccomend everyone have a look at. There's also a little colour meme that you can do at the end of the colour one, which I've done (last below) for some idea.
Any questions? I'm happy to answer. Just make sure you read both this and both the above links beforehand cause it might save you the trouble.

I think it depends which translation you use. The unofficial English one came with it as a brush setting. [link] < that one
This is my current brush setting, if that helps: [link] You can see how I usually set my brush, keeping in mind I vary the settings pretty often

I think you got to download that. I got a brush and it included Middle-Flat if I can find it I'll give you a link.

Loved the tutorial, tried by the Purplekecleon but not had much success ... I have difficulties with background and at one point in particular that always makes me stop the process in the drawings: I do not understand is the layer of the sketch fic or not visible at the end of the process, you draw on it and delete or leave? I can not let this cool effect

Sorry, I don't make myself too clear on that. Basically yes, the sketch layer is visible the whole time. I just blend and clean it into the rest of the image (at step 6, when I merge all the layers)
This tutorial is pretty old, I have made one that sort of shows the process better since then: [link]
(even though I don't use this method anymore, either, haha. My method changes all the time!)

Of all your tutorials was the most completinho, thanks! Can you give me some help? The result is [link=[link] , if you can comment on what I may be doing more to get the correct tutorial I thank her, remembering that from step 8 I had difficulty grateful!

Awesome tutorial. Do the same steps apply when using photoshop?

You can try, certainly. But Photoshop isn't as good as Sai at colour mixing for paintings like this. There's a free 30day trial of Sai if you want to give it a shot :3

Do you have to have a tablet to use sai? 'cause sadly, I don't have one.

No, you can still use it, but it does help to have a tablet, a lot. I have done art using a mouse for quite some time in Photoshop, years ago. I don't reccomend it though. It breaks your mouse! XP

I tried using the middle/round brush for blending but it wouldn't blend properly. Either it'd have no effect or just paint over everything and ruin it. D:

The Middle_Flat brush mode I abuse is only with that unofficial translation. Not sure exactly how you can transfer it, but I'm pretty sure there's a way, I'd have to look into it.
I reccomend fiddling with brush settings too; I have several duplicated tools with modified settings to make things easier. You can get some better results as well. And if it makes it easier, I can upload screenshots of my settings.

Well I have that one and tried the middle flat with... not much more success. ._.
Screenshots? That might help.

Middle_Flat and Noise settings in Brush mode, in this one.Plus the Airbrush and Pen tools. And sometimes (though not here) I use the Watercolour and Marker and Acrylic tools (etc). I've never downloaded any brushes, they're just the ones I got with my translation pack when I downloaded the trial...

That's odd! My Paint tool Sai doesn't have Middle_Flat as a texture...Is there any way to get it?

I'm pretty sure that's where I downloaded it from. If you download that translation and go into the Brush folder you should be able to find and transfer any of the brushes you don't have into your installed one. I don't know if there are any places to download the brush itself...

Now I'm blind XD I don't have that program but I've been pretty good about converting other tutorials to be usable in Elements XD;

Sorry, I fixed that xD
I seriously reccomend you try the Sai trial as well. I tried painting this way in CS3 and it just didn't work! I was a Photoshop addict for 5 years, even I was reluctant, but it's sooo nice to use. It's free to download and use for a month so seriously try it xD

well I'll still stick with Elements. Still have to learn how to do things with it and I'm just stubborn XD

My eyes burn now, thanks for that text/background color choice.

Much better.
I like your shading and coloring but I really did feel like my eyes were about to explode. @_@

Sorry about that! The colours on one of my monitors are pretty weird, it looked okay when I did it, but I fixed it as soon as I saw it on my other monitor.

Yellow is much better, thanks. xD
I always wonder if my monitor causes the same sort of effect. I'm using an HDTV, and it's pretty nice but it has some kind of visual auto-tune that changes the contrast and color settings according to what's on the screen. I've tried everything to make it stop, but it has no settings to turn it off. So I'm never quite sure if my shadows are dark enough or if white is really white, etc.
It's not crazy noticeable but enough to make coloring and shading a bit awkward sometimes. I always worry if it's going to mess up my colors.
