Description Another beauty.

Ok, so I came home from school today, had a nice hot lemon and honey drink ( I have a cold, it sucks ), pulled up my tablet and started painting this Isn't that great, I can't believe I took such a long break from this art business ;-P!!

Anyway, I really love the way this piece turned out. I played around with some textured overlays, which really gives the nebula less of a painted look. And makes it look, well, textured I like.

Interpret the name as you will Enjoy <3

Edit: I decided I didn't like the texture overlay, so I removed it and ended up adding a bit more detail to the piece as well. Plain painted style > texture overlays of rock or bark or whatever it was.

Oh, by the way, on his other website, he actually openly admits to using stock photos and such for his bases:
[link]

All he's doing is applying textures and colors via layer blend modes and then using smudge/paint tools over the existing photos to make them look like they were painted. Any idiot can make this kind of schlock.

The post there is from 2004... I think he started doing art that time. Pretty lame and weak proof.

You better stop spaming around here.

It's the same work, Sparkles. And in case you hadn't noticed, he's actually been net.dead for quite some time. This piece in particular is from 2006. There's also nothing that would indicate that he stopped doing it the poser class way and started doing it differently.

As far as "spamming", that's actually exactly what you're doing. There are, quite literally, dozens of people asking HOW he made the "art", I'm simply telling them. The fact that you're so afraid of your little "community" being exposed for using poser class techniques, to the point where you have to threaten me says quite a lot about your little ~need~ for page hits and popularity points.

Posting stuff like this:

How on Earth did this receive a Daily Deviation award? It is the famous Hubble image of the Eagle Nebula (M16), also referred to as the Pillars of Creation. All this kid has done is applied the same image over several layers with different blending modes and opacities. This is a disgrace.

And its actually rather sad, you being a celestial photographer, not knowing appart a real image from a painting. There are good artist out there, you are aware of that right? Not everything has to be "ripped". Sorry but this just irks the hell out of me.

octane2 In reply to synax444 [2009-11-03 01:15:17 +0000 UTC]

synax444,

With all due respect, have you seen the photograph that I'm referring to? Due to art being subjective by its very own definition, I very rarely air any grievances or objections to any kind of art, especially space art. But, when this received a Daily Deviation award, it really pushed my buttons. In actual fact, this is the first time I've clicked on a thumbnail image of a Daily Deviation, and just said to myself, "what the... ?!"

I think you've missed my point. The issue here is not whether I can tell the difference between a photograph and a painting -- I think I can (in actual fact, I strive to make my landscape photographs appear as paintings by capturing my subjects at the right time of day). My gripe really lies with the final product that has been presented here, and subsequently been awarded. Have you read this kid's own words? He has freely admitted, elsewhere on other submissions, that he takes stock images and simply puts them through a couple of iterations of filters, messing with blending modes and varies their opacities.

Perhaps this piece received an award purely from an aesthetic viewpoint, ignoring the gory blackbox details of how he arrived at his final destination. Perhaps the suggester and selector are unaware of the most famous image ever captured (of space) and how image is a mock-up of that said photo.

I'm not a whinging, crying, man-babby. I am just a little disheartened. Disheartened that there are some of us who truly suffer for our art, by putting in the hard yards to produce something which we can be very proud of showing to others -- especially when it comes to astrophotography; it's like I'm presenting my viewer the heavens -- and rarely get any recognition. Yet, some kid can take a stock photograph, manipulate it, utilising no thought, whatsoever, and then get praised and lauded for it.

I agree with you, there are some incredibly talented people on DeviantART, pushing the boundaries in their own respective fields. This, however, is not one of them, at all. Unless, you're in the same age bracket as the original author (yes, I read through all the comments of praise).

Take another look at the image and see if you can understand where I'm coming from.

In the end, this is my just opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Regards,
H

I didnt miss your point, you're saying this is a washed out manipulation of the Pillars of Creation. It isnt though. Maybe a lot of his inspiration came from that photo, but you can clearly tell its brushed freehand.

I respect your opinion, and I agree with almost everything you have said, just not with this painting. Unless someone can match up the images side by side, there is no proof that this is a ripped image.

I dont understand how anyone can accuse him of ripping the image JUST because he painted "pillars". Its an insult to his talent.

I'm trying to level with you here, but there is not enough proof for me to believe that this was stolen.

No disrespect to you.

synax444,

This was the one and only time I've felt compelled enough to reply to something which I thought was rather suspicious.

I respect that, and I appreciate that you even questioned the validity of his image. If I were to think something was ripped I would have done the same thing. I just know this artist's work pretty well, and I had to stick up for him in this case.

I hope I didnt come off as disrespectful.

Take care,

I've gotta admit, this painting had me running for my NASA picture book. I swore that this was a colorized rip of the "Pillars of Creation", a portion of the Eagle Nebula that was photo'd by NASA. Fortunately, I was wrong. I don't mean to cast a negative light on this in the least; it looks extremely realistic! The shading is realistic, as is your color blending and shaping. You have created a true masterpiece. Brilliant job, and congratulations on the DD, you deserve it!

This kid is so absurdly under-educated that he actually thinks the only nebula photo that exists is the one of the Eagle Nebula. LOL

theoriginalhappydais In reply to Mipsus [2009-10-07 20:17:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, excuse me for referencing only a single photo, and the one that most resembles the painting. This actually looks similar to other NASA photos, if you must know. For instance- The Cone Nebula, Thackeray's Globules, a photo of Cirrus in colorized infrared, the Eagle Nebula as a whole, The Great Nebula of Orion, and Reflection Nebulas in the Constellation Chameleon. I realize that not all of my examples are nebulas, but they all share a certain similarity to the painting. And I know that there are more nebulas than the Eagle Nebula- to be honest, my favorite nebula is either the Rosette Nebula in the constellation Monoceros or the community of nebulas within Orion's belt.

Oh, and thanks for assuming I'm a guy. What, is a girl being interested in astronomy is too unnatural to be true?
