She wasn't breathing. She had fallen a second after Yamamoto had, landing awkwardly on her side, her own zanpakuto's blade sticking out of her back. As soon as she hit the sword disappeared, dissolving into wispy smoke, leaving the bloody handguard embedded in her chest... This was not a good sign. I dropped to my knees by her side, pleading with her to be alive. I rolled her onto her back and collapsed on top of her, pressing my hands into the wound: one on her back and one on her chest, praying to whatever deity not to take her away from me again. But as I put pressure on her wounds they stopped bleeding on their own accord, her skin began to lose color, draining my whole world of color with it... she was dying. No, she was... she was...

"You promised, dammit, you promised..." I hissed, and started pouring my reiatsu into her, everything I had in me. It was irrational, there was nothing I could do and I knew it. But still I fought, tears freely leaking from my eyes, blurring my vision and splattering onto her bloodied face. But even as I reached my limit, pouring an incredible amount of reiatsu all at once into her, she still remained quiet, still... lifeless.

"No..." I choked out, and slowly my desperate healing faded as I lost the ability to keep it up. I choked back a sob as the last of the healing glow disappeared, leaning down and touching my forehead to hers and kissing her one last time, trying not to notice her lack of a pulse, trying to forget that this was goodbye. "Mi Vida... I...I..." I sobbed, not able to get out what I wanted to say. We stayed like that for several minutes, me sobbing on top of her lifeless body, cheek pressed into hers. I was so distracted by grief I didn't notice as warmth began to spread throughout her body... She twitched suddenly. and I pulled my head back in surprise, staring wide-eyed at her. She twitched again, then took a sudden, body-wracking breath, her head lifting off the ground in a violent coughing fit. I caught her head before it hit the ground, still staring in disbelief. She cracked open her eye blearily, immediately focusing on my face.

"H... hey..." She rasped, sounding as if she hadn't spoken in years. I shook my head, still in shock.

"Jo?... Jo!" I practically screamed, and she cracked a painful grin.

"Who else... were you expect.. expecting?"
