Question! I printed out your feather patterns, and I just need to know, did you adjust the patterns AFTER you had them printed out? I'm just trying to see if your last feather (#21) is the same length and such as it is in your PDF file that you've provided for us. Thank you!

Thank you!! And one last question, I'm trying to glue the fabric together with the wire in between them, i heard that E6000 worked best, but I'm not so sure. Either I didn't leave it to dry longer, or it just doesn't work. So my question is, what did you use to get your feathers to stick to each other and the wire? I see that you used some sort of paint? What kind of paint? If it wasn't paint, what kind of glue Doo you think would work?

Ryua In reply to onipaw [2019-04-09 01:58:55 +0000 UTC]

My first roll of wire did NOT stick worth a darn, I dabbed some hot glue along the length and then painted and stuck it together. (Or you can slide the wire out, glue it, and then slide it back in and squish it in place before it cools)

My second roll of wire was a much heavier gauge, and it stuck to the paint much better. I'm not sure if it was the type of metal, or the thickness.

I'd love to find a more seamless way that still allowed movement, one day....thanks though~

SuperMiniMicro [2016-06-02 03:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Question! Do you always have to be holding the wings, or is there a variation to attach them to your hands so they can relax?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to SuperMiniMicro [2016-06-03 02:08:25 +0000 UTC]

One could attach them to their hands, but the weight will still drag down on your wrists, so it's easier to just let go of them whenever you get tired.

OR if you are looking to give your hands/arms a break, the wings can be removed from the hands fairly easily, and I keep meaning to put a hook on the front of each shoulder so I have a place to hang them and take a break. Does that answer your question?

I enjoy seeing what people make.

I also feel a bit guilty about lacking new content - real-life has drawn me away from crafting as of late - so encouraging others and clearing up confusion is the least I can do~

Please advise where I can find latex tubing. I've tried Home Depot, Lowes, CVS and medical supply stores. No luck. If I cannot find it what lse will work? Elastic? Thanks!!

heyy i was just wondering, since im planning to make wings with ur tutorial and are gonna try use fur for the arm covers, do you think i would still need the plastic mesh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Sarikitten In reply to Cloudspin [2015-07-16 17:27:07 +0000 UTC]

Did you succeed in using the fur as the arm cover? If so how did you attach it without ruining the feather movement?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Cloudspin [2014-06-16 16:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Well a bit of plastic mesh is good for covering the primary fan, but not required. So you can probably skip it for now & just grab a bit later if needed~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cloudspin In reply to Sunnybrook1 [2014-06-17 16:58:24 +0000 UTC]

mh ok ill see how it goes without the plastic mesh for now, after i get all the materials needed for the wings xD but what kinda fabric would u recommend using on the feathers , and would it be possible to use something else than the hose on the harness?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Cloudspin [2014-06-17 18:00:28 +0000 UTC]

The type of fabric isn't as important as it's thickness/fiber type (needs to be able to absorb/hold the paint, so super-thin or shiny/slippery fabrics don't do as well) but the name of the fabric I use the most if basic broadcloth.

And elastic should work just fine, if you don't want to use the rubber hose.

Alright sorry one more question. How long does this take to make? Like if you worked on it for 5-6 hours a day how many weeks would it take to make both wings? Im doing this for a wearable arts thing and I have a certain amount of time to make this. Thanks so much for your help!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to NibblesNZ [2014-05-24 19:31:15 +0000 UTC]

I estimate 40-45 hrs, so that'll be 9 days or about a week and a half, BUT some of these steps require paint/glue drying time, so it's not exact. If you are dedicated they can be completed in 2 weeks - this is of course assuming you are making FABRIC ones, according to my tutorial - paper/cardboard/posterboard ones can be busted out in about 2-3 days, but don't last as long.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NibblesNZ In reply to Sunnybrook1 [2014-05-28 21:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Ok thanks! About how long do the paper/cardboard/posterboard ones last? And i'm a bit confused about how the Fabric feathers are stiff. Thank you SO SO SO SO SO much!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to NibblesNZ [2014-06-01 03:11:40 +0000 UTC]

Depends HEAVILY on how much abuse you put them through. Posed & non-moving they could last for years, moving carefully and slowly would be at least a year, and heavy flapping/bumping into things? If it's only 1 event they should last, but more than that the wear & tear will accumulate and start to show.

Luckily it's fairly easy to remake & replace broken down feathers with my design, and since the materials are so cheap I'd say try it and see how it turns out~ At best they'll  do what you need, at worst you have some practice with the articulation, possibly patterns & practice for making them out of fabric instead.

And indeed, I was surprised at first too at how well fabric sandwiched with paint stays in the position it dried in, with some nice flexibility when moving. It just works, maybe something to do with both layers of fabric being glued together with paint makes it less flexible than fabric (example: think how hard it is to bend over & touch your toes when holding onto a friend with both arms!)?

Does that answer your questions?

I nearly finished my wings, however... I noticed that in many people's photos, the feathers turn horizontally, and the effect of real wing feathers diminishes a bit. The same happens to me. Since my description is as bad as it can be, I drew it here so you know what I mean (it is a bit exaggerated in the picture, in reality, it does not look SO bad... but the effect is still there):
sta.sh/0miyw8t33fs

Is there any known way to prevent this? Does this happen to you, too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to akelataka [2014-05-15 18:02:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I've seen this as well. The problem comes from the feather shafts having too much space between them on the pivot point, allowing them the room to twist and lay at that angle. When the pivot point is the proper size - just wide enough for the primaries' shafts - and any gaps are filled or stabilized (I use metal washers for this, myself) then when the wing is opened the shafts don't twist like you describe.

And yes, I had this problem on my previous pair of crow wings, when it got old and stretched - it was fairly easy to tighten though, luckily. Let me know if that helps, or if more explanation/advice is needed.

akelataka In reply to Sunnybrook1 [2014-05-16 07:57:53 +0000 UTC]

I see! Thanks for the tip, I will try filling the gaps using the metal washers. However, there is not much I can do about the secondary feathers... is there?

Sunnybrook1 In reply to akelataka [2014-05-16 16:29:36 +0000 UTC]

Your secondaries are spinning too? The ones attached to the elastic in a line? Hmmmm...those should only spin/be at an angle if they've been constructed that way. Have any pictures of this? I might be able to recommend a solution for it....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akelataka In reply to Sunnybrook1 [2014-05-16 20:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they are spinning too... kind of.... a little bit. Well I will leave it for now and see if the finishing helps a bit (I guess that adding the fabric feathers arm cover might help to keep them in line).

At the time being I am working on the wing coverts, but in my head I am planning how to do the arm cover. I think I will experiment on it a bit because I would like to make a movable alula, but still I thought about doing the whole cover out of fabric. May I ask why exactly did you use the plastic mesh? Is it only to keep the elastic above your elbow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to akelataka [2014-02-12 15:52:31 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much, also didn't want fewer icky wrinkles forming on the sleeve where I move my arm, this way they're hidden under the plastic panels but still movable and look photogenic. At least, that's the plan

Think you could attach the alula to your hand with it's leading edge on your pointer finger & hold the main wings up with your thumb & bottom 3 fingers while manipulating the mini-wing? Hmm...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akelataka In reply to Sunnybrook1 [2014-02-12 18:14:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes that's exactly what I was thinking about... attaching the alula to my pointer finger ^^ Once I am done I will let you know the result. Oh and thank you for the reply! ^^
