Description
Wing for a costume I'm creating for this weekend's SPN convention. Base to tip, about 59 inches long. Inspiration and instructions provided by and her costume wing tutorial found here. [link]Coat-hanger wire, felt, superglue, ribbon, and a whole lot of patience with a sewing machine.

Aw, love digging up wings I've missed~ So what was the final costume? Do you have any pictures?

Hi!Ā The final wing turned out pretty good, big enough that I had to cart it around in a gun bag, which made flying interesting.Ā ^_^Ā
A few friends took pictures and posted them on facebook.Ā My favorite is here:Ā scontent-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hpā¦
And if I haven't said it before, thank you for such a great tutorial.Ā Whenever someone admired the wing I always direct them to your dA page.Ā

Sweet! I find that a sports bag (like for baseball bats) works for me, but travel with these babies are always interesting.

I wondered how you traveled around with those.Ā
First trip, I had it checked onto the plane in a poster container.Ā Flight security opened it leaving one of those little slips of paper saying "hey we checked your luggage an extra time cause it looked suspicious".Ā
Next time I had it packed in a gun case.Ā Security didn't give it a glance.Ā ^_^

Oh yeah meant to ask, where did the sewing machine come in?

The sewing came in when I had to attach the felt feather and ribbon to the wire.Ā I followed your instructions almost exactly except for feather construction.Ā For that I had the felt feather on the bottom, super glued the wire to it, and then put the ribbon on top of the wire and glue.Ā Once the glue was dry I reenforced the whole thing by doing a wide stitch over the ribbon and wire.Ā That was a bit tricky because if the needle hit the wire it would break.Ā
You can see a close up here, but its a bit fuzzy.Ā sta.sh/01rqlvgvvb8r

Ah, I see! So was the felt still two layers painted/glued together? Or did you stiffen it another way?

Nope, just one layer of stiff felt.Ā Bought it stiffened from the craft store.Ā I was lucky that the black was from a good thick batch.Ā Some of the other colors of stiff felt were a bit thin.

Looks like one of those 2D turning into 3D art (popping out of the paper). : D

Considering it's made of stiffened felt, you're not that far off. The feathers are actually really thin. And the prototype I made out of cardboard.
