Description For anyone that was asking for a toutorial, This is as close as I think I can get. It is a very close look at how I work.

I lay down the base colors then draw everything in manually overtop starting (on the layer) with what is far away then closer up. Though I start with the dark shadows in the grasses first, then add dark blades of grass then work my way lighter to the highlights and any flower or seed details at the end.

its not so pretty so close up lol.

how many layers did you work on for one horse>

2 - 3 maybe maximum. Seperate layers maybe for the tail and mane, sometimes for white markings if I am not sure I will like where they go lol.

great insight. Your original filesizes must be absolutely epic. My computer would die lol! Your work is proof that time taken over detail is very much worth it.
I'm curious - on the raised hind fetlock is a brown area. Do you start in monochrome like that, detail, then add colour over the top, or is that just a brown bit of the leg? Just wondered why it's not black or white like the rest. I'm intrigued as to your way or working

I block out the major colors, maybe 4 or five, then on each area I block out more detail, but still rough. Then I go in and add fine detail. Of course if anyone has suggestions or I work out better ways I am never stuck on one way of doing things. I do like to block out the colors first as it gives me a bit of an idea of how the colors work together.

I do start entirely with color. I think the brown area is a brown area of the leg. Occasionally I will add the white after, but if I do that I hate to recolor over something that turned out okay lol.

yeah the filesizes are kind of computer crushing. I have a fairly high end machine but the file does stress it out.

Oh I see thanks for explaining!! I block everything out first too, except usually in greyscale these days, although I used to (and still do, occasionally) do it the same way you describe.
