Description This pic split in four sections with the hair, sort of reminds me of the beatles heh...anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm going to make a mold and cast it in wax....I'd like to get a smoother look, especially with the hair. I'd also like to refine the detail of the teeth and make the hair flow a little better. However, here's it in super sculpey from all angles.

You may be able to one day! haha I want to finish it and move on to the body, but there's a few kinks that I can hopefully work out before I move forward. I really appreciate it man!!

He's looking great! not sure what you meant in your earlier shot, you mentioned something to me like- "brush his hair down with turps"??

Thanks! I was just talking about turpenoid...it melts and smooths the wax when applied with a brush.

Cool, I'm interested in knowing what your doing, so will you be making parts in wax? is this so you can make molds?

sup3rs3d3d In reply to Lee99 [2011-07-28 19:43:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I plan on making a rough copy in clay, make a mold of it and then pour wax in it, let it harden and then get finer detail in the wax sculpt. Once I finish I'll make one more mold and then use resin. Sounds like a total pain in the ass right? haha

It does sound like a pain, so all that just to get even finer
detail? ....why bother.

apparently having small amounts/chunks of cooled wax in the mold prior to pouring helps. the pros on CH gave that one out. it does work as does 'Slush casting'. this is where you pour in then immediatley empty the wax out and allow to cool a bit then pour the wax back in. i do this one and its all gravy. shrinkage is about 3% in most cases apparently.

ahh ok...I guess I'll have to practice this one a bit. Pour in then out and then in again...I guess if a fine layer of wax builds on the outside layer it bonds with the mold and then the rest comes in shortly after to reduce the shrinking bc it's not completely whole..Im guessing that may have something to do with it anyway..something about the cohesion. I can't get on CH at work, so I'll have to check it out later.

ah, well becareful of wax 'bonding' to a mold. this occurs when the wax is too hot and you can tell cos it flows like water. TimBruckner's advice in Popsculpture is that it should ladder up; be like thick double cream. then the slush molding works well. i had a piece bond to a mold once; had to bin it. you'd never get it out if that happens.

hmm..I plan on putting some vaseline in there, but I also started looking for other advice and I read that it helps a lot to heat up your mold before you pour, so between the slush molding and heating, maybe I can cut the shrinking down to where it's not even noticeable! I really appreciate it bud! Wax is a whole different world for me. I guess I plan on just doing heads in wax and then the bodies in clay, unless it's a pretty small figure.

Ok, so just warm it...and I'll have to look up talc...man, Im going to have to take out a loan for all this stuff! haha Thanks man! You're helping a lot! You transferred it quite well from what I can tell.

Thanks man! Do you know of any way to NOT get shrinkage when you make a cast of this out of wax? I ordered a few more things, so my experiments will begin soon...The more I know beforehand the less money and time I'll waste
