I'm sure I'm not the only person who made this comparison. Cute animals that can undertake a temporary transformation to become more powerful but still change back? Ha! Nice try!Although joking aside, I'm curious to see how the Mega Evolutions play out in battle. Many of the designs look pretty dang cool !
...And on a side note, a Digimon vs. Poke'mon game. I can still dream!

Been thinking about this comparison ever since the first Megas were properly revealed (sans Mewtwo mega since they originally didn't announce what it was exactly). And to think that people used to blame Digimon for being a Pokemon rip-off… even though anyone who paid closer attention to both series could notice plenty of differences:
*Pokemon are very animal-like in terms of behavior whereas the majority of Digimon possess more human-like behavior and intelligence.
*Pokemon are usually called out to test their strength against others in a competitive manner. The digimon partners on the other hand usually evolve to protect their human partners from danger.
*The obvious difference that was valid until now: Pokemon couldn’t –usually- revert back to their previous forms (a notable exception would be Red’s Eevee in Pokemon Adventures manga). Digimon do that all the time. The Digimon also have more forms available than pokemon in general.
*Digimon series are darker and deeper in sense of the plot, battles, mood, character development, themes, and so on. The story also moved faster (containing less filler) and the seasons started featuring different casts and universes from the 3rd season onward. If only the Pokemon anime had done the same as well…
Calling the situation “ironic” is an understatement if you happen to remember how badly Digimon got flamed at its earlier days. And it’s even worse when you realize how mildly people have handled the whole “Pokemon steals from Digimon” news. The general opinion seems to be “Mega-forms OMG, awesome!” for the majority and “somewhat upsetting” to the small minority who actually dare to complain about it. Try as you might, you can’t spot any torches or pitchforks now whereas they were everywhere at the time Digimon first aired.
This gif pretty much sums it all up static.fjcdn.com/gifs/mareep+w…
And it’s not just the upcoming pokemon games that rip-off stuff from Digimon’s books: Digimon Frontier, a show that first aired in 2002, tried to be something different by removing the usual concept of partner digimon. Instead, the main characters consisting of six human children had the ability to transform into Digimon themselves via spirits they obtained. Fast forward into year 2011 and we get Pokemon ReBurst, a manga series that features people transforming into pokemon hybrids…
Granted, one could argue that the Pokemon/human fusions are much more human looking due to their hybrid nature. And since the manga hasn’t been translated to English (and likely never will), it isn’t that well known and will likely keep staying under the radar. But the Kyurem fusions of Black 2/White 2 are another story entirely: Digimon had already shown us the concept of DNA-evolution back in the year 2000 during the Digimon 02 series. Again, one could defend Pokemon’s situation with the notion that Zekrom, Kyurem and Reshiram were once one creature which is why the fusion was possible in the first place, yadda, yadda, yadda. But you can’t argue that it’s a whole lot more closer to Digimon DNA-evolution compared to only vaguely similar fusions/evolutions of Slowpoke + Shellder (=Slowbro) and Mantyke + Remoraid (=Mantine).
Overall, I like the majority of Mega forms (Absol, Mewtwo and Charizard look the best, Amphros, Blastoise and Mawile look good, Venusaur looks decent and Lucario + Blaziken try to look “cool” yet they fail miserably). BUT, I don’t like how the developers of Pokemon have to resort to using ideas that originally were an integral part of the Digimon franchise. Fusions and uber-powered Megaforms were among the most notable things that separated Digimon from their Pokemon adversaries in terms of evolution. Alas, that Shame on you, Pokemon :/

I love this, it's very well-written. I've personally always liked the Digimon anime more, and now I just have to do a head/desk whenever I see the new Mega pokemon, along with the people who still try to claim that it isn't a ripoff of Digimon.

Thanks, I noticed that I accidentally cut short one of the last phrases at the very end of my rant. It really bothers me more than it should >_>;
One could argue that uber powered Mega forms , fusions and the like are a very common trope with anime/manga/games in general. That they're so common in fact, that you can't really call pokemon "a copycat" for using them as well. The problem with this idea is that up until now, Pokemon franchise has had a distinct style of coming up more and more creative ways of evolving in order to make it stand out from the rest of its kind. There are the usual exp evolution, trading, evolutionary stones, friendship etc. Then there are the more unique ways: Tyrogue's evolution depends on whether its attack is higher than its defense at lvl 20., vice versa, or if they're even. Some pokemon need to be tamed at certain time of the day or you need to use a certain item on them at the certain time of the day to make it all work. Some have gender specific final forms. Some need to have a right "partner pokemon" in the party to evolve. Shedninja requires not only an empty slot in your party but also an extra pokeball in your bag. Feebas will only evolve into Milotic if you have its beauty stat maxed up. Etc, etc, etc.
I could go on. My point is that aside from the first few more obvious methods, makers of Pokemon have come up with plenty of ideas that conveniently revolve around just a few gameplay aspects. So I guess we can't be too hard on them for using the less unique Mega-concept now; there's only so much you can recycle the old gameplay elements... But the problem is that they've already "borrowed" another trick from the Digimon franchise a'la Kyurem fusions within a relatively short time. If you need to stoop so low as to constantly borrow key ideas from your drastically inferior opponent ("inferior" as in for the sake of popularity, not with the content), then I'd say you're starting to lose your touch. I fear that they're going to keep at this course and make their copying become even more blatant.
Gamefreak should really stop creating more creatures/regions/whatever and concentrate more on using the assets they already have. Give us a pokemon platformer-game, sequels to older games, remakes of Gen 3... They could do all that without adding a single new creature or gimmick to their list. The mere deviation to another game genre would probably be enough to silence the complaints about the lack of "new material".But it's not just Digimon they're copying: Pokemon Rumble is their answer to Skylanders. Granted, Disney is no better with their Infinity... and who in their right mind WOULDN'T copy Skylanders? The concept of toy figurines being "transferred" into your video game as playable characters is ingenious! But my key problem with this is, like I said before, the lack of originality. Either you start creating new original ideas of your own (like you used to), Pokemon, or you'll lose your dignity as a mere copycat. In case of the latter option, I do hope they have the sense of honor for pulling out from business entirely before their rep goes completely down the toilet.

So what if the idea ain't original? It's still good enough to be copied. Hell, Pokemon wasn't the only one to copy the "transforming-in-battle" shtick and Digimon wasn't the first.
I'm not trying to be mean or rude but it's not really a big deal when you really think about it. Even though the transforming in battle routine was mostly done outside gaming, it's still a commonly used but at times effective technique.

Yet pokemon should not get a free pass for out right ripping off an idea from Digimon, espcially when many accused Digimon of being a pokemon rip off back in the day.
Pokemon, for taking mega evolution from Digimon, should be scrutinized for this practice and it's fans called out for this hypocrisy.

Pokemon didn't rip off Digimon. The whole ripoff but was completely BS. There are similarities but in the end, it's different than digivolution. Anyone who still thinks Mega Evolution is a ripoff really need to get over it and get their facts straight. It's been almost 3 years since the reveal and not many people are talking that shit any more.

Because people are either used to a certain subject for so long, they think one is a ripoff or they're just dumb folks who probably didn't look into the series enough to justify that reasoning. I like Pokemon a little more but both series are original in their own right.

At least we can agree to that, Digimon was never ripping off on pokemon, it is way too different to be anything like pokemon.

Indeed and vise-versa. Heck, Mega Evolution isn't a rip off of Mega Evolution from Digimon since in Japan, Mega Level is referred to as Ultimate Level.

Digimon and Pokemon fans have to realize, in japan is named differently, it’s america that decided to name it “mega evolution”
But still, too many resemblances to Digimon, but hey, i don’t see Digimon guys suing Nintendo for it.
