This is something waaaay different from my usual style. The model is Lauren, a film student. She mentioned she liked film noir, so I thought I'd do a little film noir tribute portrait of her. While I was shooting, I kept in mind the noir aesthetic, which is a lot of long shadows and high contrast, and obviously black and white. I also wanted the shot to embody the typical noir themes of despair, alienation, guilt and vulnerability. You know... fun stuff.

Kev giving into the dark side...
The only thing that seems a bit off for me is the dark shape over her shoulder. I think it contrasts too harshly with all the softer shadows on her and the wall. But even with that.......OMFG GOOD LIGHTING!!

damn i 'd forgotten about that. that's the strap to her shirt, and in earlier versions, we'd pulled the strap down a bit so it was hanging off the shoulder, and it looked good that way. but when we went back for take two, we forgot to reposition the strap. waaasted!

oh my gosh I'm loving this shot! I have always been such a fan of dramatic lighting, and I love how her skin is so white and soft. The shadows are just amazing, how they drop out so quickly yet you can still see just a faint outline of her elbow and arm. This is definitely going into my favorites! Title means a black night? lol been too long since I took french 
this is kinda random but i've always wondered, what does your little copyright say, above your website? I've always been curious about that!

thanks very much. yes, the title literally means "a black night" but it's also a play on the term film noir too... so sort of "a film noir night"
