supertimer — Stamp - Favs and Comments

Description Note: Yes, it's written "No messages" with a "S" on the dA top page, so there's no mistake, lulz.

My first stamp ever. Just my random opinion on the whole Fav and Run thing. Sure it's good to get comments, but people should see a fav as a compliment too.

Took me few minutes to do, haha.

Feel free to use it.

Actually, I'm not really sure if you meant you want comments or not >_> But it's always fun to get them! But it's also good just a fav.

Bluh, hit the add button accidentally too soon.
It's not that we aren't happy with the favourites, because we are, it's just that we like getting a little more when we know we can.

Goddanmnit. Okay, just ignore this. I have no idea what's going on with my browser at the moment. It just did this on three other deviations.

It's not that we don't see the faves as compliments, but we don't always appreciate it when people fave and run.
Many of us post our art to get feedback, and while the faves are good, sometimes a comment can make you the happiest person alive for five minutes.
Some of us are on dA because we like to talk about our work, we like to know what people think and why they like the work. We often put hours into our pieces, and it takes two seconds to tell us just one thing you like.
We like to know we're being appreciated and while favouriting our stuff is showing us you like it, it's not telling us why or what you do like about it.
That's usually why we complain about "fave and runners".
And it's not our problem other people don't get messages
It might sound rude, but I'm not going to be all grateful for what I've got if I KNOW I can get just a little bit more.

I can understand your point. I, myself, somewhat prefer comments more than fav. It's just that I see people, especially in those other "Comments over Favs" stamps, getting fussed over it and posting comments like "OMG I HATE IT LULZ *is angry*" or anything similar. Even if a fav doesn't speak for itself, it does mean that someone likes your work. Also, a lot of people do not comment because all they had to say is just something like "Beautiful work!" or "Wow!" or "InsertAnyNiceWordToDescribeABeautifulPicture". They simply have nothing to say about it so they just fav it.

I also need to mention that people who give comment also like to get a reply from the author, even just a simple "Thank you". You don't know how many times I've written with all my heart a comment to someone and the other never reply, especially when it's a more personal side (dunno, like in deeper journals, lol). Yes, I know the author surely had read it, but at least be nice and say something like "Thank you for your kind words". I can understand when someone doesn't reply to a comment like KAWAII DESU or ROFL (which I still reply to those lol), but when someone actually give a nice comment or/and critique and doesn't even get a thank you, well, that pretty much sucks for the commentator who actually took time to comment.

You might not be in the lot of people who prefer comments over fav (or beg for comments) and yet never reply to the commentators, but many artists are actually like that. I'm not pointing anyone (and especially not you, I just mean in general), you just need to do few research to find many of them on dA. I'd say on personal experience that this fact alone doesn't really encourage people to comment.

I like to give comments to a fav picture, but when I know the author never replies no matter what or doesn't reply to all comments, then I don't see the need to even take time to comment.

Of course I'm not counting those ones who Fav just to get views, I wouldn't count them as live dA users lol. But surely, in the lot of fav you get, there must be at least 90% of people who actually like your work. Indeed, we'd love to get more (who doesn't? ), but just be happy with what you have. C:

I'm sorry if this comment feels like I'm repeating. I'm just kinda sleepy at the moment and can't really concentrate

Andanism In reply to supertimer [2011-11-08 23:11:15 +0000 UTC]

I think a lot of us who prefer comments just like to know our work was appreciated on more than a "look at it once, then never again" level, which faves tend to be more often than not.
It's not that I'm not happy with what I have, because I know with the amount of faves I get, people obviously love it.
I'd just prefer a bit more. I didn't join dA to have people fave and run, I joined dA to showcase my work and discuss it.
I just think that if you're going to favourite something and the person isn't begging for comments (because really, that's kind of low...I have stamps in my artist comments saying I love comments, but they're not rude, I mean, if you ask politely without begging, people often feel better going for it) you should probably spend the two seconds it takes to say something before you fave and run.
Like I've said, people usually put hours into a lot of this work. A favourite doesn't show as much appreciation as one would like to think.
If you don't take the time to comment, you're not going to know whether or not you'll get a reply, and it doesn't make you any better than those who fave and run because they're lazy or whatever.
The commenter also has to understand that some artists have like 50+ comments in their messages, I know I do on a somewhat regular basis, and there is no way in hell I'm able to reply to all of them.

As I said, I know people want more. Everyone wants more. It's part of human nature. Some wants more to the point of being greedy, some less. While I want more as well, I'm all right with what I have.

It's your case if you want people to say what they like about your picture, but some are on dA just to show their stuff. They don't really care whenever they get a fav, comment or none, the views is what matters. Some are even using dA as a part of their portfolio, so it doesn't matter to them either. Personally, I'm here to show fan arts on dA, but if people don't give any comment, well it's all right, lol.

Actually that's the thing. I would rather comment to a picture of someone not begging than someone who does. Someone begging for them is a bit greedy of their part, and yeah, we, as common people, don't really like greedy people, lol.

Of course you have to comment to see if someone will reply, but just by looking at the other comments (of the same picture or/and other pictures from the same artist) you know if they would respond or not to your comment. Also what kind of comment will the artist reply to. I don't look like it, but with time I became observant enough to know who will reply and who will not. We know that one getting a DD will probably not reply to everyone because they can't keep up.

In that case that is perfectly understandable if the artist doesn't reply. Also, you as well did mention that the artist might not have the time to reply to everyone. The one who favs work might also not have the time, mind you; it works on both side. Especially when they know the artist doesn't like to get comments like "WOW" or just "BEAUTIFUL" so it's pointless to just comment like that. It takes about the same amount of time to comment with a "This is beautiful" than to give a reply like "Thank you", which is like one second each (or less or more depending of your typing skill of course). I myself can get quite lot of comments after I post a new deviation, but even if it can take times to reply everyone because I have a full time job where I have no computer with internet as well as a busy real life, everyone will get a reply, yes, every single comments (except the trolling comments of course), even the KAWAII comments. A simple "Thanks" or "Thank you" (or "Merci" if the poster speaks French since I'm French lol) is fine and takes less than a second to write.

But, as I said, it's all right if you don't reply to all the comments you get. I'm not telling people to be just like me, lol. It's understandable if you can't keep up; just don't beg for comments. Of course this message isn't toward you, but to the greedy people in particular.

Andanism In reply to supertimer [2011-11-09 18:49:51 +0000 UTC]

If you ask politely for comments, it's not begging, and someone who asks politely (just a quick something with a please, of course!) is going to get so much further. I don't think the ones who are desperate for comments realize this.
It just shows that you prefer the comments than the faves because like I said, people tend to fave them, then never look at them again.
It's not a comforting thought.
Now, I don't reply to ones where I just have no idea how to reply to. Trolling and one word "KAWAII"s (I hate that word and if you're not Japanese, you should probly just say "cute" so you don't look like a moron) don't warrant a response from me. Since I don't have too much time, I tend to pick and choose which ones I reply to.
I have standards of what I will reply to, and that's perfectly acceptable.
I just think that if you like a picture enough to fave it, you should probably take two seconds to say why if you have the time. We don't know why you faved it, you could've been putting it into a collection for stuff you hate (which has happened to me several times recently, kind of made me go "Uhm, ok? That's just gonna make it more popular in the long run, but whatever.")

Anyways, if you have the time to comment, you probably should say something, even if it isn't much. Even if the artist doesn't reply, it doesn't mean they don't read it, and there's a multitude of reasons as to why they didn't reply. Other than just being an ass.

Faving and running, I get and have no problem with, it's the comment and run people that boggle me. O_O More specifically, the people who take the time to praise your art and don't fave a thing. Quite self-contradictory really- "This is absolutely hilarious, I love this" - but not enough to fav? Heck, this hypocrisy irks me much more than fave-n-run, unless it's between friends who don't want to hurt each other's feelings by not dropping by. I wish there was a stamp for this oddity, I could use that one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

supertimer In reply to noleme [2011-06-17 15:42:17 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the case. I've gotten quite lot of comments and no fav thing (even better sometimes they say "OMG FAV+++" and they don't fav it, haha). I personally don't mind. I guess sometimes they just like it but not to the point of ever looking at it again, so there's no need to fav. Or sometimes I guess it's from people who comment but don't fav, but can download the pictures on their computer so they can look from there again. (lulz I'm trying to find an explanation XD )

Most of time I comment and don't fav, it's just as you said, it's always between friends. I comment and give some critiques as well C: It makes them happy!

You can always make one stamp about comment and no fav! C:

It's still very good that you take your time thanking everyone.

I've seen few people who hates getting all those "Thanks for the fav" comments, haha. I respect their choice. I will usually only thank those who fav many works I have since they took time to look at the rest of my gallery.

YES, exactly. It's like they don't care about the comments they get, lulz. I mean, I'm trying to reply every single comments I get, including the "OMG FAV" or "AWSUM" or "ROFL" (in case of comics, lol). At least it's to show some kind of "Thank you for taking your time to comment and look at this piece". I can understand that some people won't reply every single comments, especially to short comments like I mentioned, but I've seen too much of people replying to ABSOLUTELY NO COMMENT AT ALL, even those more elaborated. I truly hope those ones don't expect more comments, haha.

Usually, I just never leave a comment to those who never reply, lol. If they get mad for it, it's their problem I don't even have to fav their work in the first place.
