Description
The snow began to pick up. There had been multiple snow squalls through this leg of the journey however Erica had the feeling this one coming up was going to be big. Erica looked around, while she had previously seen other entrants there was nobody to be found. A small amount of anxiety crawled in as the wind began to sweep away the footprints of other pairs. Her main evidence that she was navigating these mountain trails correctly. The large pine trees seemed to loom over Erica as she nudged her mare into a trot.
“Come on my sweet, lets pick up the pace while I can still see where we are going” Erica said to her mount Vilya. The young mare had been impressing Erica at every stage of this phase so far. While normally headstrong and opinionated Vilya had taken the challenge with ease despite her age. Almost as though she was bred for this Erica thought with a laugh. Afterall the mare had been, both her sire and dam were also making their way through the challenge. Not to mention they were riding right in the birth place of the Obertaurer. Vilya’s ancestral lands. It had not been a mistake to bring her.
Erica shook her head, she needed to concentrate, the snow was getting deeper and the visibility was worsening. Once again Erica pushed Vilya forwards, this time into a steady canter. Her hands tightened around the reins nervously.
I mean we’ve made it this far. This is so much farther than my goal of just starting. I could just turn around a go back and there would be no backlash. No shame…. I think. I know I wouldn’t be happy with myself but I can live with that. Because maybe I’m not cut out for this. Maybe I shouldn’t hav-
Erica’s panicked thoughts were cut short as Vilya abruptly let out a small buck. She could feel Erica getting more and more nervous, tightening the reins, stiffening her body. With a shake of her head Erica banished her worries.
“Sorry Vilya, you’re right. I’m okay, a little snow shouldn’t make me so nervous. I trained for this. We trained for this.” Erica muttered under her breath, Vilya tossing her head in what seemed to be agreement. Erica loosened her grip on the reins, pushing forwards through the deepening snow at a brisk pace through the pine forest. With a bit of a smile Erica patted her mare’s neck.
“Besides Vilya, I don’t think you would even let us turn around” she said with a small, still slightly nervous chuckle. The mare’s ear flicked back as she tossed her head in response. Damn straight! The mare seemed to say.
“Damn straight indeed”
