You mention above that you use the Maru more than the crowquill (that's the Hunt 102?), which has a stiffer action. So, what's your go-to for overall inking? Do you start with a Maru? Or a G-Pen? Or something else?

I just started inking with dip pens recently instead of multiliners, and while I love how it turns out, I can tell I have a lot to learn. Thanks for the tutorial!

The maru is springy and easier on the hand, the Crowquill hunt 102 is a bit stiff and will work your hand more....unless you have a older one thats better made in the hunt line.
To be honest i brush most of the work i do now, it quick and ease on my hand and arm. My style changes between them as i need as well, nib is cleaner well brush can be more random.
Tho when i use the nibs i use the tool i want to get the effect i need, mostly the Maru. (not sure if i was clear here....i can retell if need....sleep needed)

Tech pens are deadlines, meaning no live or variations in the body of the line unless you work the point or layer.
I use them but to touch up and do boarders in conjunction with the Bow pen (another How to i have up).
Thier ok, but can be over used in ther ease of use.

If you have a example i can give a quick over look and tips?
Also ill be doing a second part to the one i have up with each nib type i have and thier line along with some special effects you can do with nibs.

Cool - thanks so much! That is very helpful. Since I'm new to so much of this I'm trying to make sure I'm using the right tools. I will definitely look into the Maru pen nib as an alternative and see how it works.

I just got myself a bow pen for borders last week and I can tell it's going to be pretty great.

Thanks for offering to take a look at an example -- really awesome! But I think I'm probably not far enough along yet. I'm still learning how to actually control the pen and all and make it do what I want it to do, and I'd probably just be wasting your time. Thanks, though!

Your welcome, teaching runs in my family.
The Maru nibs i get are from jetpens.com, havent been picky on the maker.
When cleaning them make sure the ink is off the tip and well.
I should do a how to on cleaning.

Bow pen is tricky, check out my how to on that to help get you going.
Thier awesome and even old ones are still very useful.

Ok, if you need a hand let me know. Best of luck!

Cool, I'll cover the nibs a bit more in part two.
The gold was given to me and the Mitchells are new to me. A Hobby Lobby find i havent used yet.

Now on brushes, i was thinking a how to on them.
I use sable hair to synthetics as well, tho each does a different job.
The synthetics are good for a short bit on fine lines, i use them for area coverage or thick bold outline passes.
My type of brush of choice is a #2 sable hair (red sable?), it the right size for me and holds the right amount of ink.
I was using my Winsor and Newton Series 7 on one piece but found its to important for my watercolors to mess up with inks. So i started the search for new brushes, i tried Blick masterstroke sable till it was no longer made, Raphial sable (like a W&N series 7) and now im useing Isabey Sable as they are great and well balanced tho expensive they last 10 pages or more with the right cleaning.

As to you work i will PM with a note.
If you havent done so stop by my gallery as well. I have years of inks in thier.

Great tutorial, thanks for this! Do you know if each of the inks you listed are marker proof and water proof?

SurfTiki In reply to Learningasidraw [2016-02-19 10:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Each is india ink and waterproof once dry (its my experience thier is always a little surface that can smudge a bit if a medium vehicle is moved over it).
As for marker proof i dont know as i dont use markers much. If i recall i think Bombay and the Black star are ok for this.
If you look at the bottles in person they might say or looking up on a art supply store website as well. Inks are tricky so test before you use and mix them well.
