Description
Some tips and tricks in general:- put a paper under your drawing hand, so you don’t smudge anything
- use a reference that is as large and detailed as possible (for example in this case: 2500 X 1600 pixel)
- take your time trying out brands and pencils (I prefer Faber Castell)
So, this is my promised skin tutorial. To be honest it was weird to do, because I’ve never paid much attention at how I draw. Analyzing my steps was pretty interesting.
Most of my pictures aren’t that detailed like you can see here. I just did it to have a good example for my tutorial. How many details you put into the skin depends mostly on your reference.
Please be also aware that this is just my way of doing it. It can be right for you, too, but maybe for you a different way works better.
As always, if you have any further questions feel free to ask
This is a tutorial for my picture Sam Worthington .

as far as making dark spots with your tortillion (or tool of choice), is it required that you keep it dark with graphite to do so, or are you just manipulating what's already on the paper?

I keep one side dark, while I cut the other side to keep it clean.

That's really interesting. I like your technique and definitely check it out as soon as I can. I always wondered how to make skin look realistic with all the details in it but that makes it clear. Thank you so much for this inspiring tutorial!
btw, the tip with the use of the tortillion to add graphite isn't that unusual. The first time I saw it was while observing the portrait artists working at Montmartre in Paris. They took graphite off from dark areas with their tortillion and added it somewhere else to add smooth subtile graphite layers. Since then I love doing that.
One questions I have for you: do you know a trick to make your tortillions clean again without having to buy them again after they're too dirty? (they're quite expensive..) Or do you make them yourself?

Thank you very much I really didn't know others artists are working the same way. That's great to know!
I can't clean my tortillon either, I just cut the top of it with a pair of scissors.

Um... what is a eraser pencil? I've never heard of it

It's a pencil which has an eraser instead of a lead. Here is a better picture of it: link
I buy those from Faber Castell.

I've only just started using a electric eraser and like it

i am completely stunned annd i have to say that doesnt happen very often! very well done on all of your amazing drawings and thank you so much for sharing your technique... i love my style but i think i can learn a lot from you and move more into realism as a result...
so this leads me onto a question for you... i have an art group that i have set up for the very elitest graphite artists... 10% of the group members are experts (you would be in this category) and their artwork is submitted to the main galleries... the other 90% are for aspiring artists who want to get as good as you... the idea is to get huge amounts of exposure for artists such as yourself... it is a brand new group and doing very well alread, have a look at some of the artwork already in the galleries and i hope you join, you truly are THE BEST OF THE BEST!
here it is
