After working with digital for so long I've recently been drawn to assemblages, collages, and just mixed media work in general. But looking at this work is like looking at a Joseph Cornell piece. You get a great feeling of nostalgia, age, and also a well thought out developed concept and composition. Did you find the box, this aged or did you work on it to achieve the look?

I went the same way like you some years ago by quiting digital works and totaly focusing on traditional mixed media. About the box: I bartered it for a pack of cigs from a guy at the local dump. It looked that aged (the inside, including the background, was altered by me though)

Do you allways use the same cabinet? Or do you use different ones so you can hol an exposition and stuff.

swelements In reply to Nikolaj [2005-07-03 12:33:33 +0000 UTC]

This 3rd edition was made of the same cabinet you can still see on my homepage (the one that doesn't exist anymore). I'm always searching for new cabinets to use since this one is the only one that I have altered up to now.

very good. although it is unique unto itself, it of course reminds me a little of the work of joseph cornell or duchamp. all three of your pieces have a certain throwback feeling which may or may not be the intention, but i really enjoy that. how do i put this...they are happily the opposite of all the anime found everywhere here.

but why are there only three pieces left in your gallery? i must have fallen asleep.

Well you deleted your devwatch and so you didn't where uptodate. I have all my work left on my official homepage ([link] ) and will only show selected and new work here on DA. Thanks also for your comment. I gotcha there. Unfortunately you'll have to come back in a few days since I totaly revised this piece. (in a positive matter) and have to get a photo of it to post it here.

You need the key to get to the hart?
The key to your own hart lies within it allready?
The inner cabinet is its hart! that idea I like.

Hmm had a hard time to figure out what hart means. I'm sure you mean "heart". Anyway - again I redirect you to my journal. Please read it.

Very interesting presentation and form of work, this is the kind of thing I miss out on working in my digital non-spacial world.

The potential impact of a series of these is huge. I could see a se of sic cabinets hanging on a gallery wall; each with it's own message, design, content. Would multiply the interest of form, by adding the factor of relationships ["how is this one like the others in the series? how is it different", ect].

swelements In reply to wroth [2005-06-11 06:53:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes this would be a great concept. Widen the impact of one piece by multiplying it's from with differnt contents. Stay tuned mate.

I like it a lot! The vintage style of it and everything.. wonderfull!
stupid question; when you use cofee, does the piece smells it afterwards?
superb job, i just love your style!

swelements In reply to PheyL [2005-06-11 06:54:17 +0000 UTC]

The coffee itself starts to smell after several days if you don't cover it up. But applied on a piece it's quite neutral.

For some reason I'd like see a stuffed bird in there...like a cardinal or a blue jay looking up at the key. I'm not sure why, as it's pretty complete as is. I like the minimal quality of this image. Very nicely done.
