Description Threw together a bunch of ref sheets for the characters from my thesis, just for the heck of it. Their colour refs needed updating anyway and the rest are just me having fun with poses. :3 Again, this is in Traditional because the only thing digital about this are the basic colours and the text, and the focus is supposed to be the drawings anyhow.

Some of you might remember Labu, my pangolin character that showed up a long time ago - she's been revamped to be more animator-friendly. ;D Monkeys are definitely something new to me, and they've been a lot of fun. (Please note that I was not going for complete accuracy on species; although each of my guys was loosely referenced from a particular primate species, as far as animation is concerned I am willing to sacrifice absolute accuracy for the sake of design and animatability. So don't yell at me if they're not completely accurate, but I would appreciate people with more experience drawing and studying monkeys than myself politely pointing out things that they think could be improved if any are noticed. )

Especially after three years of "OMG SO YUR THESIS IZ GUNNA BE ABOWT DOGZ Y/Y??" I am really excited about this. >D

All characters and designs © Shelley L. 2008.
(If my copyright is not respected on this, I will be severely displeased, since this is supposed to be my final year thesis and I'm already going against my own instincts posting concept stuff online as it is. Then again none of these animals are omgshinykewlkickass, so maybe nobody will be interested anyhoo.)

Oh, these are excellent. : D I love Gibbs especially, I'm such a sucker for that long-armed body type. (Plus, gibbons, eee!)

<333 YAY. I hope he actually looks somewhat like a gibbon and it wasn't just his name that tipped you off. xD I love them too, they're so cool looking and I've been trying to exaggerate his arms and chest a bit more than in real!gibbons. : D

Nah, I could definitely tell even without the name, you did a great job both capturing and exaggerating their anatomy. <3

I love the full out launch/jump of Su-Li's, and the happy muscle-bound Gibbs I'm really excited to see your work with these guys!

You're welcome!
That's great! My most recent project is actually for my Chinese class, I'm contemplating posting it.. it's a little comic of me introducing myself, a family member, and a friend [the assignment we were told to do]... only I didn't want to just write it. I used the characters, only I don't think I fully trust the ones I found for "Hungary" [ εŒˆη‰™εˆ© ] Would you happen to know if they looked right? Also, is ζœ‹ε‹ correct for "friend"? I know the pinyin for friend, but wanted to have everything in the characters [except my name 'cause I don't have a Chinese name :/]

swift-whippet In reply to terceleto [2008-10-08 23:04:16 +0000 UTC]

That is ADORABLE. The ' peng you' is correct but I have no idea whether 'Hungary' is. I'd believe it though. Chinese isn't really a phonetic language like Japanese is but some names for things are 'spelled out' phonetically.
Still... [link] Seems like it's just fine!

I'll scan it in and post it when I have it done I'm going through and finishing up the drawings now [since they were roughed in with circles and triangles etc marking characters].
I know it's not too phonetic, the pinyin I was provided was "xiong ya li" ... but I don't know how to recognise most sounds in characters yet
..and that's too cool that it brought up that on wiki! I never would have thought to check there >3 Thanks so much!

Wiki being in different languages is all shades of awesome. That's what I do when I need translations - I wiki things in English and then click the handy little 'zhong wen' link at the bottom to get the page in Chinese. >3

that is way too cool!
Also, here's the [rough] comic: [link] [I boxed out the names since it's on the internet, and though I don't mind my name so much, I figure my friend might not want her name out all over the place]
I'll certainly be cleaning it up and will probably be inking

omg that is so flipping cute. I love it and I love that I can read it. xD It's awesome.

The only thing I feel like I should mention would be that I noticed you use "-- wen", whereas in a speaking context I feel like it ought to be "-- yu" (εŒˆη‰™εˆ©θͺž; θ₯Ώηη‰™θͺž etc). But then, I've heard people from China and Taiwan say 'shuo zhong wen', so it's possible that it's just a regional difference in speaking! In Singapore we'd say 'jiang hua yu' to mean 'speak Chinese', and when I first heard 'shuo zhong wen' it sounded strange to me. If that's what you've been taught then of course I can't really say anything, I'm only bringing it up because wiki uses 'yu' as well.

terceleto In reply to swift-whippet [2008-10-08 23:59:36 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it!!

We were taught "-wen", but she did mention the "-yu" is used in some regions... such as "Hanyu" for mandarin, "yingyu" for English. It's neat though, to consider regional differences.. I know when we learned "who" [谁] we were taught two pronounciations - "shei" and "shui" and the same for [ε“ͺ], we were taught "na" and "nei."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to terceleto [2008-10-09 00:11:06 +0000 UTC]

It really is. 'shei' sounds more like a Beijing thing to me. And when you hear people who are more used to different dialects speaking it it's interesting to hear all the accents. My taxi driver here is from Hong Kong with a really thick Cantonese accent and sometimes I feel terrible that I can't always make out what he says.

You were asking me about different dialects, here's a funny commercial in Hokkien: [link] I don't know, to me there's something about Hokkien that is inherently hilarious. It's the most commonly-spoken dialect back home and as such I can recognise the odd word (mostly it's just the swear words, though, and you really don't want to swear randomly in Hokkien unless you intend to get beaten up. I have no idea how to swear in Mandarin because, well, that's what they teach us in school. ;D The idea of swearing in Mandarin is actually quite amusing to me).

I'm trying to learn my own dialect, Teochew. It's similar enough to Hokkien that if you know one you can sort of understand the other. Thankfully there are reference materials. xD [link] Right now I'm just another stupid 'banana' kid who can't speak her own dialect but THAT SHALL CHANGE! *decisiveness*

I think it is too... since I think my teacher is from the Beijing area [I don't remember offhand where, or if she even said where exactly she was from, but Beijing is sticking in my mind]

It does sound so much different than when my teacher speaks! I wish I knew more It still is an entertaining commercial
hehe yeaa the idea of swearing in any language taught in school has always amused me too! My spanish teacher actually taught us a few mild curses once we got to our college level class [since they offered it at my highschool].

That's too neat I'm glad you've found some reference material... I really don't have a local dialect to learn where I am 'cept the whole soda vs. pop issue xD

It makes me sad that you hadn't seen my pup when we talking the other day... makes me feel like i'm some gallery freak or something...

Anyway these are quite good characters... is your thesis about character design or some animation?... don't answer if you don't want to, it's ok.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to maria-mar [2008-10-08 18:58:38 +0000 UTC]

Erm, what? o_O Why should it make you feel like a freak? I'm sorry if I inadvertently offended you, I suppose I should have replied.

My thesis is a three-minute animated short film.

Why do you sound hurt? I thought we had a nice conversation the last time we talked. Maybe it's just me, but the "don't answer if you don't want to" just comes across as hurt and I am confused as to what I have done to hurt or offend you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maria-mar In reply to swift-whippet [2008-10-08 19:09:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, i was a little hurt... cause i showed you a link to my pup painting and you never said you've seen it, so i thought you didn't. Sorry if i was wrong, it's just that some people here don't like others sending them links about their own works. But i have never done it before... I'm sorry, i was wrong then I really enjoy talking to you!

I really appreciate your work, and as i study animation too, and all i want is to be a character designer, but i feel like i have a lot to learn, to see your work and read your comments really helps!...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to maria-mar [2008-10-08 19:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm sorry if I missed the reply. I did see your painting and I thought it was very good, but at the time I had other things to do and I don't like giving 'superficial comments' if you know what I mean. These days I'm a bit less stressed about the internet, so I will have to go back and give you a proper comment on that painting. I'm sincerely sorry that I forgot about it. And I'm also sorry that you were hurt, but you shouldn't take it so personally if someone doesn't comment or reply to a comment. I used to be sensitive to that as well - and still am sometimes - but I've since learnt that a LOT can be misunderstood over the internet and it doesn't mean that the other person doesn't like you or is being mean! Getting hurt or offended over things like that only leads to more misunderstanding.

I also don't mind if people link me to their works, but it doesn't necessarily mean that I will comment on them. If you wanted me to tell you what I thought, you could have asked me to. I had no idea that you were expecting me to comment and so I didn't know that you would be hurt by my not saying anything.

I will try and comment more often then! I have a lot of people on my watch, and I know that some people treasure comments more than others, so I try to leave comments to people that I know will appreciate them. Hooray for animator people!

Oh, it's not that i wanted you to comment!... but i would really like to know what you thought.... i know what you mean, talking in the internet can be really stressful and it's easy to misunderstood people, so i usually don't really give attention to that. But i really enjoy talking to you that day!... I'm sorry, and i feel bad now cause you're being so sweet to me!...

Might be a good idea to think about WHY you're faving something before faving it. I'm not trying to convince you to comment, but you don't seem to have a reason for faving about twenty pieces from my gallery in one shot other than 'you just had to'. I understand that the way dA does favs now makes it easier to do, but you did fav a LOT of my art in just a few minutes so I'm just wondering how much time you took to actually look at each picture. I'm not trying to be an entitlement bitch here, but I suppose I wish my art were enjoyed on something a little deeper than "oh, this looks nice/cute, *click*".

Sorry for going on at you like this. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine and I feel the need to discuss it a little.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Inner-Observer In reply to swift-whippet [2008-10-08 19:03:54 +0000 UTC]

No I didnt just click and fav without taking the time to appretiate them, After a faved a couple I went back and took a long look at them, because really, i dont just go around faving everything I see without Taking time to enjoy it, being an artist myself, some people fav all my stuff without even looking at it, wich I dont like, so I did take the time to look and enjoy your pieces

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to The-Inner-Observer [2008-10-08 19:07:03 +0000 UTC]

I appreciate that very much then, thank you. Every so often I'll get someone that comes in and faves a lot of work from my gallery and apparently without really looking at it or anything, so I'm sorry if you thought I was attacking you - I suppose it's a sort of kneejerk reaction to a pile of faves sitting in my message centre from a single user. I'm glad you can understand how I feel about it too!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Inner-Observer In reply to swift-whippet [2008-10-08 19:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Its fine, I get that reaction too some times,
I guesse you could say the people that do just fav everything without looking at it, probably just want attention from well known artists, and your welcome again
