Description (to be scrapped eventually.)

So much has been happening over the past two years that I realized I never uploaded these! If some of you may recall, more than a year ago I asked people to suggest dog breeds for me to doodle, in lieu of my evolving art style ([link] ) . I've drawn quite a number out of all that were suggested to me, but I suppose being busy with my senior thesis at the time I forgot to scan and put them up. Oh well, better late than never, eh? Hopefully most of them are recognizable.

These are awesome!
I like the rodesian ridgeback (i hope thats what it is)
and like the others as well!
I was wondering because I'd like to get better at drawing dogs, are you a self-taught artist or did you go to a art school
to improve? If so how long did it take to graduate?
you don't have to anwser if its to personal. :3

Not sure which dog you're talking about but there is indeed a ridgeback up there Thanks!

I was self-taught up until I went to art college (four years at the School of Visual Arts NYC, BFA in Animation, class of 2009), and while that might not be for everyone I don't regret it. I learned a ton that I might not have been able to learn on my own, and I made a lot of awesome and creative friends.

If you mainly want to learn how to draw dogs and other animals, there's a lot you can do to help yourself. Drawing to have fun and be creative is great, but don't forget to do studies from photos and live dogs. There's no better way to understand how anatomy works than by studying and jotting quick sketches of a living creature, and I learned a lot about basic anatomy by observing and studying my own dog. I was only able to play around with dogs as you see in the picture here after a long time of studying not only basic anatomy but also the different 'looks' of various breeds. I did pretty much all of this without any reference, and I can do that because I've done my homework. If you want more specific advice, let me know and I'll be happy to give it.

If you want a more complete education in how to draw all kinds of things, then I would recommend both broadening your horizons and possibly attending classes or an art school. But some people just want to draw for fun and there's nothing wrong with that!

XP, I do draw some pictures from photo's
I never tried drawing my dog in positions more than standing straight,
but Thats a good Idea. I really need to study on the different structures of the face
I mostly put alot of detail on the face compared to the body, I guess to make people not pay attention to
the badly shaped head XD.

But yes I would love to know more, and thanks.

swift-whippet In reply to Hail13dogs [2011-06-23 22:35:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the base structures are key. No matter how much detail you add, people that know will be able to tell a goofy drawing from a good one. Basic anatomy is the single most important thing you can get down because all dogs are variations on a theme. Once you understand that it's all a matter of changing the proportions of everything to fit each breed.

If you do a couple of drawings, I'll be able to maybe look at and redline them for you?

Ok, when i first started drawing I truly couldn't believe I ever could have got this far
with it, and I am so happy to learn more!
I would like to get more complex with dogs

Wow, that would be awesome, I'd love the help!

Hey just wondering, what kind of dog is that one on the third row of pages (first column)--the one with the wolfish face and stubby legs? Looks like a Swedish Vallhund but I wanted to be sure

I might be requesting a commission for Vallhund stickers from you one day when I get a bit more money together (or a job, guh).

You'll have to wait a bit for me anyways, I've closed commissions for a while since I have some life stuff to sort out. But sure! They're cool little dogs and I'd like to meet one in real life someday!

These are fantastic, don't scrap them! You obviously have a lot of love for and interest in dogs (something I can relate to, although probably not to this degree!) and that shows in the range and accuracy of both the breeds and emotions shown. It kind of reminds me of a mix between Lady and the Tramp and the NOVA: Dogs documentary, actually, and I love it! (The terriers actually look a lot like my grandma's muttley, too, so now I might be able to figure out what breed she is)

Just curious, do you have a Belgian Tervuren or a Schipperke in there?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Catagelophobia [2011-03-31 05:58:04 +0000 UTC]

See, I wouldn't scrap them myself but sometimes devART has different ideas from me about what constitutes scraps and what doesn't, and moves them for me. :\

Thank you so much! β™₯ Yeah, I'm a nerd about dogs as I like to say That's interesting you compared it to a Disney movie (definitely an influence on my drawing style, though I'm trying to get away from that into my own kind of thing) and an actual dog-umentary; I haven't yet watched Science of Dogs so I'm not sure if there's anything artistic you're comparing it to or just footage of the actual dogs...? o: just curious. I've actually never really used Disney movies for hardcore reference in drawing animals, I found real animals a lot more rewarding and useful to study and still do. I did watch classical animation a lot growing up, though, but I do feel that 101 Dalmatians was a WAY bigger influence on me artistically than 'Lady'.

No Terv, but there IS a Schippe -- bottom row, second page from the left, top right of page. I didn't shade him black, but there you go! I love Schippes. Also there's a Belgian Groenendael/Belgian Sheepdog in the third row, second page from left, which I suppose is kinda like a happy marriage between the two!

swift-whippet In reply to higashi-kaze [2011-03-28 23:02:59 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't if it were up to me :\ but sometimes devART decides that certain pictures should belong in scraps and puts them there without asking.

hahahah, I did ALL of those missy! Well the dal and the sammy are in the above picture, see if you can spot them. I have some silly huskies here: [link] glad you likes these!!

I just really want to ask seeing as a lot of your drawings on Deviant are just amazing, how did you start drawing? what did you do to get to the point your at? I love to draw animals but im not very good... any tips?

swift-whippet In reply to Maxicha [2010-10-13 01:43:39 +0000 UTC]

Firstly, thanks so much for your comment, I appreciate it a lot.
Tough set of questions. It'd take forever for me to really get into it, so I'll try and sum it up as simply as possible: I've pretty much been drawing since I could hold a pencil, as clichΓ© as that sounds. And really all I did was practice a lot and I think that's the best advice I can really give you. I didn't use to be very good at drawing animals either but it's taken me years of studying anatomy, drawing from photos and live animals to get to where I am. I've had some really good critique and advice given to me by some drawing teachers I've had as well.

If you want me to look at specific drawings you've done and give you more specific critique, do let me know. As long as you keep drawing and practicing, you're going to get better.
