This is so cute! Yep, i already knew that Bedlingtons and Whippets were related. Well, all breeds are genetically similar, which is why all dogs are classified as one breed; the great canis lupus familiaris.

You know, I saw a bedlington terrier for the first time recently, and had to look again because I thought it was a lamb, lol. Anyway, I love Swift's expression here.

Yay, Bedlington! I went to the Beddie National Specialty this year (as I'm planning on getting one next year :3) and a breeder called them "Whippets on Rogaine". I thought that was priceless XP, espeically after seeing them all wet...they really do look just like wippets with big ears. Hehe.

Oh my goodness! I just had a heartattack of joy over this. I totally miss being here on dA but college is kicking my butt these last couple semesters. Regardless of that little sob story (hahah) I absolutely love this swifty!!! Nice to see that you still think of me because I still check out your deviations whenever I get a chance. We look so cute together if I might add. I really appreciate this and it totally cheered me up. You're the best.

Yeah. Everything feels like its non-stop since last semester, through the summer, and now this semester. I have like no free time. Which means I have several unfinished pieces of artwork and tons more that I want to draw but just don't have the time to do. I'm counting down until winter break!

BEDLINGTONS EEEE :amillionhearts:
This is adorable. I totally want (and have been wanting) a bedlington character. They're so fun to draw.
And they're related to whippets? That's... interesting. I never knew that.

thank youuuu Maliness. they be awesome, yes. I would love to see you draw a bedlington! heck, I'd love to see anyone draw a bedlington really, just for variety's sake.
it was thought that the bedlington, along with the smooth fox terrier, played a part in the whippet's makeup by crossing them with runty greyhounds. later on some IG blood was added to help improve whippet type, so there's no trace of terrier in their appearance, but they're more terrierlike in personality than greyhounds and IGs.

I've always wanted to see a Bedlington in real life. So do you know if whippets helped create the bedlington breed or if the bedlington helped create the whippet breed? Cuz I've heard both. o_0

me too! -> [link]
so have I. but more stories seem to say that the bedlington contributed to the whippet's makeup rather than the other way round. I guess because both were poor man's breeds originating with the British working class, the origins as such are less... known. maybe it worked both ways, who knows. I've heard some people say the whippet wasn't crossed with terriers at all but I believe that they were.

lmao they run like hounds but look like sheep. I want one now. I think whippets were crossed with terriers. That's where they get that dynamic attitude.

exactly - they're much more terrierlike in personality than greyhounds and IGs. but they have hound traits too! :3
and bedlingtons are so cute. <3

0.o But doesn't the fuzz get in the way? XD Such interesting breeds these are.

Of their sight. They're in the sighthound group. Doesn't the fuzz get in their eyes? (Keep in mind that I've never seen a Bedlington up close, so I really have no honest idea. But it looks to me like the fuzz would get in their eyes and detract from their sight?)
And that's all really interesting, actually...I'd wondered where they got their appearance from!

bedlingtons are not sighthounds, they're terriers.

D: How could I have bene so misguided??
I'm sorry, I totally didn't realize. They're so BIG for terriers! *laughs* And usually you draw sighthounds.
But I hae seen the light! Thanks for educating me! XD

swift-whippet In reply to kettish [2007-09-30 22:07:18 +0000 UTC]
*laughs* they're not that big! AKC standard calls for 15-17 inches at the shoulder, on average. which is actually just a few inches shorter than a whippet. The Airedale Terrier is the biggest terrier - about 22-23 inches at the shoulder.
for the record, it does seem like the fuzz would get in the way of their seeing too! xD but most dogs generally experience the world through smell before sight.
aw, I actually draw plenty of dogs that aren't sighthounds. :3 although I love them it's good to mix it up a little so that I don't get bored or stagnant. and Mitia is a friend.
no problem, I enjoy spouting off my little bits of dognerdliness to anyone who is interested. xDD
