not all of them are 'poor dogs'; this stamp was made for the greyhound breed and not specifically retired racers.
of course, that doesn't mean that I don't completely condemn what cruel people put racing dogs through. whenever money is involved, it unfortunately brings out the worst in some types of people and unfortunately the animals have to suffer for it :\ the racing industry can be a cruel one and I am glad that you are doing your part to help a retired racer. I hope to do the same in the future Good luck to you and your new friend, and I'm happy that she's found somebody who will give her a good new life.

Poor dogs, they truly do live terrible lives as race dogs. This one guy my mother and I met Friday rescued this one 8 year old greyhound who lived a life as a race dog.
Her career as one ended when she broke her front leg and the previous owner just tossed her into a kennel and the only reason they kept her was to eventually breed her. When we met the dog, it was her first day being out in the outside world. And the current owner who rescued her said the night before she had a panic attack of waking up for the first time without having any other Greyhounds near her. And she was so cut off from the outside world and people that she didn't know how the receive affection.
And what pisses me off about the race dog business is that these race dogs, especially Greyhounds... are legally viewed as property. And nobody is doing a damned thing about until during the aftermath when the dog is either killed due to they are no longer viewed useful, or if they're rescued.
There was one guy in Arkansas who was caught disposing of his racing Greyhounds by dropping them off of bridges.
Sometimes I'd like the break those abusers' legs and then toss them in a cage and see how they like it.

Please don't propagate the inaccurate idea that all racing greyhounds are treated poorly or abused. Obviously there will always be some horrible people, but the majority of the big race tracks in North America are nothing but kind to the greyhounds who live there -- after all, why would they abuse them when they want them to run fast and win? Racing dogs who break legs are unable to continue their careers so they are retired early. That's not a surprise, and not a negative thing at all. My greyhound adoption agency often receives dogs with casts on one leg because they needed to retire early and are going to a place where they can relax and heal up.
As to your other comment, obviously a greyhound who has lived its whole life at a track is going to be anxious when moving to a new situation, as any dog would be. Mine didn't know what certain things were for a while, like squirrels or big trucks on the road, etc. You have to remember these dogs grew up in basically a boarding school full of their greyhound friends, then when they retire they're often moving into a big city with lots of new sights and smells. A dog feeling anxious in that situation has nothing to do with the racing industry, and, as any dog would, they generally get over it pretty quickly.
The trainers who work at the tracks love all the dogs they look after like their babies, and spend all day with them, training and socializing them and spending time with them. Yes, they sleep in crates, but their crates are their safe 'bedrooms'. My greyhound has a crate in my house as well and often goes into it on his own to sleep and feel safe, as do most dogs.
Most big tracks also have very close partnerships with rescue groups across US and Canada, so the majority of retired dogs are adopted out -- Birmingham race track in Alabama has a guaranteed adoption policy, where all dogs who retire there are sent to adoption agencies across the US and Canada. Because of that, a lot of private owners choose to send their dogs to Birmingham for their last few races so that they are guaranteed a home afterwards.
It's the spread of misinformation like what you said above that causes people to try and tell me my dog was 'so horribly treated' and abused prior to living with me and that's absolutely NOT true whatsoever -- I have met a few of the trainers at the track he came from and they love all their dogs and continue to keep track of them after they retire. I have also met several of the people who work at the tracks and with adoption agencies and volunteer their time to transport dogs from the US to Canada and other places around North America, so they can be adopted by rehoming organizations.
I know your account is deactivated but hopefully someone will see this and read it and realise that there's more to the story than what some extremist, alarmist groups tell you about racing dogs.

Brilliant! I was hoping I could find a stamp like this - I totally support retired greyhound charities/cause and I'm going to display the stamp in my journal right now.

Nope, as far as I'm concerned, commercial racing is just bad news. I know there are commercial tracks and racing people that do treat their dogs well, but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule and putting money against the welfare of an animal is just something that isn't going to attract the best kind of people. But you know, you don't have to go to a commercial greyhound track to watch the dogs run. There are events such as hobby racing and lure coursing [link] where owners and their dogs just go out to compete and have fun rather than win money and bets. The dogs and the people really enjoy it and I think it's so much more wonderful to watch than commercial racing!

Yeah, i agree, but i just love seeing them run

swift-whippet In reply to MoonsEternalLie [2008-08-26 12:49:30 +0000 UTC]
Exactly, and my point was that there are other ways of watching them run without having to support commercial greyhound racing.

swift-whippet In reply to Chris94 [2008-03-15 14:21:26 +0000 UTC]
well thank you!
I don't support the greyhound racing industry because of the hideous amount of cruelty that goes on because of it, so I don't want to make a stamp for it. I'd make an anti-racing stamp, though. You could always use the search button and see if there is one around.

oh i meant anti racing as well!! god racing greyhounds is horrible
i sed it rong, so sry on my part, my racer came from a rescue, and ive learned alot about wot goes on at the kennels. Horrific. my dog is tagged and can't be let of the lead, because hes so used 2 chasing small things, horrible.

swift-whippet In reply to Chris94 [2008-03-15 14:58:25 +0000 UTC]
xD Yes, I wasn't sure. I felt that since you had a racer yourself you might know something about it.
It is a horrific business. Sighthounds are bred to have the chase instinct through countless generations, though, it's not just racing greyhounds that chase small things. Any sighthound with a high prey drive will do it - my own Italian Greyhound, small though she is, does follow the 'chase first ask questions later' rule. But yes, I imagine how they 'train' them to race does make the problem worse.

I'm not a 'stamper', I draw things. That is my passion. Stamps are just something I do with my spare time and I don't put all that much effort into them. I'll look at your stamps and give you my feedback.
