the sifaka, one awesome beastie: [link]I have been enamoured of sifakas for even longer than I knew (anyone remember Zoboomafoo?? <3) and have had a vague character idea for one kicking around for a bit, just so I have an excuse to draw them. xD *WhisperingWolf 's contest ([link] ) seemed like the perfect kick in the pants I needed to get started, so here is my development. basically what I do to get the hang of a new species's anatomy.
at the very top, pencil sketches from photos.
in the middle, blue pencil sketches and 'gesture drawings' of just playing around with the anatomy, poses and movements.
at the bottom, ballpoint sketches of further refinement, details and such. she's quite the crazy little party girl. and she's a Verreaux's Sifaka, but she has no name of her own yet. anyone have any ideas?

sketches ARE amazing in and of themselves. they are the best part of anything and the backbone of 'finished' work, and imho much more fun and personal and just nice to look at. imho if people sketched more their finished art would also improve. C:

Awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to compile them all like this. The character looks AMAZING and so alive and real! I LOVE so many of these! The one on the branch is my favorite, but the whole process and so many of the sketches are just amazing.
I haven't seen a ton of your animating, but I'd say you've got character design NAILED chica.

It looks like she's as sweet as can ever possibly be. You can draw monkeys too, darn you!

well lemurs and such aren't really monkeys, they're just related - see how the nose is more pointed, not flatter like a monkey's face. but yeah, they are primates!

Ha, that's awesome. I didn't know that about them--which is sad; I had to do a whole report on them in the third grade, and I drew one, too, but I guess it didn't stick. 
I'm not sure if someone's suggested a name for your little prosimian, but I thought maybe you'd like Latika, which means "creeper" or "vine", or Laramie, which means "from the leafy grove."

Ahhhhh I want to see this critter animated! xD Your ability to keep uhm...like uh...bone structure from picture to picture is amazing. By bone structure I guess I mean the actual composition of the face and such. I don't know how to explain any better. D:

Awws, thank you Cheepers. <3 I think I know what you mean. I guess as an animator I've sort of been trained to keep things on-model! plus the construction of her face is quite basic and simple, based on the real lemur. (I tend to do that a lot. o.o)
I'd love to animate her sometime, that would be loads of fun!

xDD I am oooold too. but it's good to have nostalgia - I get such a kick out of seeing things I remember fondly as a kid. it's a great feeling, and it was a good time to grow up.
