Description
for *WhisperingWolf 's obscure species contest! this is my new Verreaux's Sifaka character, I've loved these critters forever and the contest was just the impetus I needed for me to make a character of one. :3 her name is Mazava, it's a Malagasy word that means 'bright, light and clear'. I hope to develop her further in future!early sketches of her: [link]
EDIT
just to clarify because people are asking:
YES she is a lemur, YES she is of the type of lemur featured in the movie Dinosaur, please guys can we stop mentioning this movie and the resemblance, it gets old and I didn't even like the movie that much anyway? ;.; sorry! I wasn't even thinking about that movie when I created her, I was thinking of the old show Zoboomafoo. Zoboo is the reason I love them okay. more about Verreaux's Sifakas: [link]

I'm a little sad that people seem to be too lazy to look up the word "sifaka" on the interwebz oO
Lovely, very lovely. The pose suits this species very well just like the cheeky/cheerful facial expression
Lemurs...hence, primates for the win!
They need to be drawn more often.
Moi, I'm a big fan of baboons and their relatives

xDDD ah well. the artist in this case will answer questions with a little help from my search engine. I can hardly wait until I start drawing aye-ayes.
I didn't really take much notice of them till lately, shamefully. but they are a lot of fun to draw and I love that I am drawing different animals and playing with a different kind of anatomy and movement. it is so much fun and makes for a very nice change. thank you Kisch!

Awww, she looks so cute :3 And quite lovely too
Honestly, I was reminded of the intro of Zaboomafoo (I'll never forget the way that lemur jumped ) It's really awesome, and the name really, really seems to fit her

thank you so much. :3

One of the good things of living in a country where every show seems to be aired YEARS later is...I still get Zaboomafoo! :3 But hey, I can almost swear I've seen the DVD's somewhere...eh, can't exactly remember where but I'm sure you'll find some if you look for them.
Oh, I meant to write "lively" up there my keyboard simply hates me.

Gah Swift...really, tell me now, is there anything you can't draw?

backgrounds. hence my cheap efforts to pretend that there actually is one back there. and buildings, and robots.
and honestly - ANYBODY can draw ANYTHING, if they want it badly enough. there seems to be a common misconception that "oh, I'm not good enough, I'm not one of the GREAT ARTISTS therefore I can only draw THIS" and I just keep telling people, BELIEVE in your skills and believe that you can get where you want to if you try. ten years ago (age 12) I could draw nothing but sighthounds and dinosaurs, and rather badly at that. if you'd told me then that someday I'd be drawing all kinds of critters with ease, I'd never have believed you. xD it's all about how much effort you are willing to devote. when you're trying new things and stepping out of the comfort zone, things are not going to look good to you, but if you persevere, you get used to it and suddenly wow! you leveled up! xD
ack, sorry for rambling. but yeah - it sets me off on my ramblething when people seem to imply that I am some kind of artgod that just snaps fingers and poof there is art. I worked hard to get my skill level up, and I'm still trying to improve and expand myself. I might not be able to draw backgrounds and buildings and robots right now, but someday through practice I hope to be able to. :3

I wasn't trying to imply that you're some sort of art-god or that you don't work hard to produce your art, sorry if it came over that way. ><; I just think it's great that you don't limit yourself to one or two subjects, like a lot of people (including myself) do.
And good luck with those backgrounds, buildings, and robots.

It's okay, hon, I know you didn't mean it that way. Just that hearing certain things set off my rambling lecturing nature. I'm sorry it kind of... exploded on you. x_x;
And hey, you know, there's only one way to stop limiting yourself: DRAW NEW THINGS! It's an adventure, and one I wouldn't trade. After all drawing the same thing over and over again gets boring after a while, doesn't it? I know it does for me. And since I am going to go into a career in drawing and art, I can't be all I ONLY DRAW DOGS SORRY LOL to any prospective employers. I have to be able to earn my keep and be able to draw ANYTHING I am asked to. So for me there is a financial gain reason involved as well! xD heehee.
Good luck with whatever you choose to draw.

Heheh, it's okay, there are certain things that never fail to set off my ramble-mode too.
And yep, I don't think you'd be finding too many jobs with the sorry-dogs-only policy on your resume. It's definitely a good thing to have a broad ability base.
And thank you.

Oh my gosh, she's so cute! She does look like she's dancing...or showing off for food. Are Sifakas monkeys, lemurs, primates...? I really don't know anything about them. Though I do remember a little critter like this on Zaboomafoo. (spelling?)

swift-whippet In reply to mederu69 [2008-02-21 17:40:29 +0000 UTC]
Sifakas are a variety of lemur, and lemurs and monkeys are both primates but are separate from each other: lemurs are prosimians, which are ancestral to monkeys and apes. (more on that here: [link] ) they're called the 'dancing lemurs', check out the videos of them on this page to see why! -> [link]
yes, Zoboo was indeed a sifaka! he was a Coquerel's Sifaka, though, which has a dark chest and shoulders unlike Mazava here who just has the dark head.
don't worry, I didn't know over much about them either but I did a bit of research in order to create Mazava. I want to do more in future, research is fun.

not really. Dinosaur was extremely inaccurate as far as history goes. lemurs and other prosimians were the ancestors to monkeys and apes, but they probably didn't exist back then. I read somewhere that the people making the movie just used them because prehistoric mammals were 'too ugly'. which is kind of funny and kind of sad at the same time to me. xD;
