Description
So after an exhaustive many weeks of doing human walk cycles for animation (not that I'm complaining, I certainly needed the practiceNormally I'd actually steer clear of sighthounds - particularly Swift - because I'd just feel like I'd need to challenge myself somehow with a different breed. It's why there are so few actual sighthounds in my animations, and I hadn't animated Swift at all in class (I'd animated her once, running, for our very first assignment in freshman year, before any of us actually knew what we were doing and because I know the key poses of a sighthound run cycle since, you know. I did actually study them). But this time, I guess since I was (and will be, for another week or so x_X) just bogged down with work on all corners, I was like "you know, screw it. I need something I can draw without thinking too much about it - let's just go with Swift." So I did, and the walk came out better than I'd hoped and my teacher liked it too :3
But I remember that after I shot this on the lunchbox I kind of just sat there and watched her walk for a while. It was a special moment, since as I said, this was the first time I had ever properly animated her. I think I should animate her more often. :3

Hee, yeah, I'm not sure how to get things to loop either x_x; if I find out how I'll reupload it. haha.
Thanks, I'm glad that you like it means a lot that you still check me out after all this time - I need to visit you more often too D:

It's breathtaking, and I can't properly tell you why! I need in an animation school!
Swift moves brilliantly. It's amazing how obvious it is that you've studied long and hard on how dogs move. I especially love the roll of her shoulderblades--all very natural and *believable*.
Great job!

Aww, thanks Deanna. it means a lot that Swift passes your discerning eye, I'm quite sure you've watched enough Disney animation to be picky!
and yes you do need in an animation school, I want to see your work movin' and shakin'!
have you narrowed the candidates for schools down enough yet?
I just love chilling out with my dog, and feeling her bones - as weird as that sounds. She's got such thin skin and very little fat, being a sighthound and all, so she's practically a walking dog anatomy model. xD studying her really helped me as far as doing dog anatomy goes - I'd feel her bones under her skin, and her joints, and I'd give her bellyscratches so she wouldn't mind. sorry for rambling.. guess I felt I had to give her credit somehow. :3

Heehee That's so sweet! No, no, don't apologize-- I hardly consider that kind of information rambles; that's the kind of stuff I want most to hear when I learn "the making of" stuff on animation. You're very resourceful, too, to study your dog's anatomy so closely like that. Can you believe I've never seen or pet a Whippet in real life? I know they're very thin though, and they must make excellent models.
My candidates remain either CalArts or SVA, although everyone in my family circle reacts with a significantly friendlier attitude toward SVA because the scholarships they offer are generous compared to CalArts. I read up on what SVA wants to see in animation applicants' portfolios, and their standards are a bit different than CalArts, so I think I'm going to have to start finding some artistic muscles I didn't know I had.

Well, I haven't met a great many whippets in my life either, though my little Italian Greyhound still works very well :3 Whippets just aren't very commonly-seen dogs. still hope to have one someday though!
I'd still love to chat with you sometime about artschools! and animation, and... things.

Trounced In reply to swift-whippet [2006-12-16 22:49:37 +0000 UTC]
Haha And here I took it for granted that you owned a Whippet! I'm not as well-read on my dog breeds, obviously. I saw the picture of your Italian Greyhound in one of your older IDs, and I jumped to conclusions.
I'd still love to chat with you about things too, my IM days are just sparsely numbered. I was just thinking it would be sooo cool to be able to see some of the work you used in your portfolio.
But that might just be because I love looking at your work...

It's not a huge deal, the only big difference is the size anyway. One can't expect everyone to know everything about dogs - I'm just a dog-geek is all xDDD
I really would like to talk to you about art school and things like that the work I used in my portfolio was mostly my high school art projects and real-media still-life stuff that I don't have with me right now. o_x there should be copies of the slides somewhere at home though (my parents enjoy using them as conversation pieces when their friends are over =_=; ) so I'll get back to you on that

Brilliant job

Holy crap, and wow! o.o Seeing that was SO worth the 20 min it took to download. All of you over there at SVA have amazing talent and would love to have just a sliver of that even though I'd never really use it for me career. XD
But really, nice work, so fluid, need to do more especially if ya love doing that character. :3

WOW. This is beyond amazing. Your skills in animation have developed so much, it's seriously crazy.
But, yes, how I'd love to take an animation class someday. There's an amazing school in London I've heard about called Bournemouth that specializes in animation. I'd die to go there someday...x3 In the meantime, I'll be taking classes at a nearby college over the summer
And, again, Swift. THIS IS AMAZING. Keep it up!

Anyway, I love it^^ You did a great job making her movement so smooth and adding the little details like her tail moving, too C: You definatly got that distinct sighthound walk down pat! Again, awesome work.

It'll be difficult, but I'm trying. ^.^ Unfortunately, all I've got to work with is some old notecards (but that's what I used in my animation class). Also, I don't have a lightbox, but I could rig something up with my camera and a lamp or two.

Awesome.
And by that, I mean, even more awesome than normal. Every single detail, the way the toes splay out a little, the way the tail bobs, the EAR, every single detail is so amazing.
She's perfectly balanced, and I sat there watching it for a good five minutes, just constantly hitting the replay button.
The love, the admiration, the...spirit, you put into that. It shines through.

Usually I can't get these things to load but today was my lucky day.
I don't know what the best compliment to give an animationist is but I exspect "fluid" is a word you all can take pride in. This image is EXTREMELY well put together. Infact I tried to make it continuous on my player just to see how fluid it was(didn't work but I have faith it would have looked flawless) You have the sighthound strut down to a science And I'm sure you take pride in that! It's a very distinct walk, and even if a thicked skulled being couldn't tell it was a whippet you would certainly know it wasn't a working, sporting or herding dog just by that sequence!

..oh, and now I want to try animating dog from different groups, just to see how I could play around with how they all move! (but that will have to happen when I actually free up... o_x; )

Heehee, 'animationist'. We're called 'animators', but that's such a cute term!
Fluid is indeed a very high compliment to pay me, and I'm so flattered to hear it. especially from you, Dia, since you come into contact with so many dogs in real life, it's wonderful to hear that you think she moves right! I can't take too much credit for the walk, to be honest - since we were given a guide to work from - but I'm glad that you think she looks distinctly sighthound. it means a lot.
thank you, friend.

where do you live? Couldn't you look into somewhere nearby that has animation classes? (after all, I'm in animation school halfway around the world from where I live xD) I'm sure you'd be great at it if you tried hard enough!
It's twenty drawings, forty frames, 24 frames per second. I actually reffed the poses from a guide my teacher gave us to work with and then in-betweened them, so it didn't take all that long collectively. maybe two hours, three hours or so?

Dalmatinka you have a great gallery, I luv your dog and character art .
There are some online Flash Animation classes. Some are really expensive, like this: [link]
And some are a lot more inexpensive, like this: [link]
I've done some online classes before (certification with Autodesk for 3ds Max), which were really good; live instructors, I was able to ask questions, even a virtual classroom set-up.
BUT, be careful, I've seen a lot of online Flash animation classes, and they look pretty bad...
You might be able to find a lot of really good free, online tutorials for doing Flash animation?
