Description 'kay. so I happened to read this comment on somebody else's deviation that basically said poodles were too girly to be real dogs, which of course made me fume a bit. if that comment hadn't been months old and none of my business I might have said something, but I felt it wasn't my place. so to placate myself I just drew George a lot, 'cause he tha man dog now. Here he is teasing Freddy in his new Hunting Class Clip, which is basically a shorter version of the Continental Clip. The Sporting Clip was cool, but I think this just suits the old boy much better. Fred was supposed to be giving George a dirty look, not looking sorry for himself, but I'll fix that when I colour this. Expect to see more Georgie Porgie, I love my all-dog poodle.

Oh, and I hereby declare that any poodle bashers must read this article. [link]
Let me explain that I can understand not fancying a breed - I can't say poodles are a breed I really fancy either - but to openly bash it and say things like that about it when you obviously don't know a thing about the breed beyond what you see in tv and the movies? that's a no-no. poodle-bashers, I don't say this often, but you suck.

This is kinda like gir, if he was a REAL dog he would be a silly poodle. So he goes into seireos mode, and the other dogs make fun of him. THEN, he proves himself (and other poodles) that they are cool!!!

Agreed! After owning (read: being owned by) poodles for several years, they definitely are NOT froo froo dogs! Although, I do think that they, like all dogs, have the ability to be froo froo. We have one poodle out of 10 that is such a girly dog, I think he's gay. lol But for the most part, no way!

On the note of your art, I love how you drew them!

Thanks so much! and yeah any dog can be prissy but people tend to lump all dogs into categories like they do, so it's nice to break the mould and challenge expectations.

Haha, I like their expressions, and how your poodle's coat looks so... furry! It's so hard to find good art of poodles on the web, so I was happy to find your work. I love George, and I'm going to track down more art of him (BECAUSE IT IS TOTALLY ABOUT THE POODLES). XD I want to have one someday, but we have a toy poodle cross currently, and she is whipsmart, mischevious, and funny as heck.

*need to get around to drawing some more poodle characters*

Aw man thank you! I'm glad people like George, I hate that people don't know what awesome dogs poodles are and just write them off as sissy things because of how they're portrayed in cartoons etc. I haven't drawn this guy in a couple years but I wanna get back on that.

and yes draw more poodles! 8D

You're welcome! I agree, it irks me that poodles and small dog breeds get so much flak. More George art would be cool, and I look forward to seeing it (btw, I plan on checking out the rest of your gallery when I have the time). Hopefully, you could start a trend of getting pple to draw/like podles more.

Aww, I like poodles! ^^ While I must admit they aren't my favorite breed, I still like them. And just because they sometimes have curly fur DOES NOT mean that they are 'prissy'. Unless the owner raises them to be. ^^

I love how George looks here....he's all "ha ha! I told you so!" XD

Yeah, they're not my favourite breed either, but I'm sick of everyone thinking that they're OMG SO GIRLY just because of their haircuts. It makes me feel for them, because the original poodle was and still is a very smart, very well-tempered hunting dog.

thank you!

What the hell. I like poodles ; ; My friend has three toy poodles, and I <3 them. Poodles are not girly, its the owners that make poodles girly (the stupid haircuts/dying them pink/etc) D: I've never even heard of any type of animal thats naturally...'prissy, girly,"......etc. I dunno if its even possible, unless theyre spoiled.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Jeekins [2007-04-01 02:58:48 +0000 UTC]

that is because people are silly and buy into the media representation of poodles. they don't know that the haircuts originally had a purpose, or that poodles aren't 'bad' unless they're spoiled or bred/raised irresponsibly. just like any other breed. I also think that a spoiled dog is more likely to be snappy and bad-tempered than 'prissy'. there are some dogs that actually enjoy dressing up and being taken to pet spas, etc. but things like that depend on the individual, not the breed. and DEFINITELY not on the breed's appearance.
sorry, didn't mean to ramble at you. hope you liked the picture itself, at any rate.

ahh, I gotta say the poodle here is awesome. xD I think poodles are pretty cool, though I much prefer when their hair is trimmed short then in those poofy hairstyles? It just looks kinda awkward, to me.
one my neighbors has a poodle but he's very unfriendly to strangers. bit me once. x_X; eh. he's cute though lol.
I wouldn't get a poodle though cause they have so many inbred diseases. x_X; ehh. maybe a mix.

I enjoy taking what most people think is 'ugly' or 'strange' and making it interesting and appealing. is why I choose to draw all my poodle characters with the fancy hairdos even though none of them are actually show dogs.

depends on how they're bred and raised, there are plenty of laid back friendly poodles. I've had a couple of owners as well as people who know people who own poodles commenting on my pictures and they had nothing but good things to say about their dogs' temperaments.

goes for any purebreed dog. if you get one that's bred responsibly you'll probably get a happy, healthy, long-lived, good-natured dog. IGs are prone to diseases as well, more so than most of the sighthounds which tend to be healthy dogs. but Bella has never had to go to the vet for anything other than her routine checkup, and the one time she broke her leg. even now that she's going on eleven and getting old, she is still showing absolutely no signs of any sort of health problems whatsoever.

LIEKIDUNNO. ten years of practice and lots of photorefs + dogmovies + dogresearch help a lot, though.

D: I never thought of it that way. I love toy dogs personally, and though I'm not overly fond of pitbulls (not because they're 'mean', just the overall body shape doesn't appeal to me as much... and I think they're one of the kinds of dogs that drool o_o; err) but I do know that toy dogs don't yap or nip unless you don't train them, which is pretty much the same for any breed. x__x DRIVESMENUTS when my parents go all EWWCHIHUAHAU they ALWAYSBARK D< gah.

yeah - I love all dogs, but pits as a breed appeal to me about as much as most other dogs, not as one I particularly fancy. (though of course if there was one being mistreated or abandoned that I knew I would be angry and upset, and the whole dog fighting/BSL crap makes me angry and upset too. but that would go for any other breed.)

THANK YOU for being one of the people that doesn't buy into the stereotype. my toys and me applaud teh Whivit.

NO BAD BREEDS. just stupid people. let that go for ALL DOGS.

and lol. I love toy dogs, personally. I always feel like picking up my dog and huggling her and having her sit on my lap... but... she's medium-sized? xD so, toy dogs are awesome. D: and socute! and stuffs. x-x like. fennecs. xD

yeah... LOTS of stupid people, unfortunately. x_X;

swift-whippet In reply to poothos [2007-04-07 22:13:44 +0000 UTC]

What makes me angrier than the dog fighting is the BSL, to be honest. the pits have it hard enough being made to fight each other, but now they have to suffer being destroyed by the authorities as well - the people should be using their power to help them? that's just a load of bullcrap.

heehee fennecs = :3 and yes I enjoy being able to scoop Bella up and huggle her! even if she glares at me. xDDD

the world is full of stupid people. and sadly, they're the ones that are doing most of the breeding.

hehe, I love normal poodles but its just some of the most ridiculous haircuts I've seen them with, along with stupid outfits that I think probably helped to destroy their reputation...

Although, that article was a pretty big insight, I mean, I never knew they were that shunned. I've known alot of poodles, and they're all really sweet dogs but.... when they get cut for showing I just want to kinda... get away. in my oppionion, (I"m probably gonna sound immature here, but I am, I'm only 13 ) The two fluff balls on the hips, and the tip of the tail ruins the whole cut.... It just looks weird... thats how most of them get skin cancer and die >.<

I think I'll cut it off there before I start ranting >.<

swift-whippet In reply to Dimintri [2007-03-30 02:44:38 +0000 UTC]

people really do need to stop judging dogs based on their size and appearance, which goes for people who love them as well as hate them. there's more to poodles and toy dogs than just omgcute little outfits and fancy haircuts at the salon.

at any rate, the haircut does exist for a purpose that's more than some kind of fashion statement, but of course for a conformation show it doesn't look like a field-dog's coat would. and hey, I've known a lot of 13 year olds - I've even been one myself about eight years ago - and you sound more mature than some of them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dimintri In reply to swift-whippet [2007-03-30 04:32:24 +0000 UTC]

I can actually completely and genuinely agree with that. although, in my oppinion there really aren't any 'omgcute little outfits' for dogs. If they were that important the dog would've been born with the clothes and hair cut. but thats just me

Just for curiosity purposes and to find out if I'm right and my brother is wrong... Isn't the haircut to keep the joints warm while the dog is out retrieving and hunting?
hehe I'm not trying to argue here, but if you saw me with my friends, or what I joke and blabb about, you wouldn't see me as a mature person I can just about guarantee it :3 but then again I don't even know you that well so how the heck I can guarantee anything, and I should just shut up before I say something really stupid, and wow is is one heck of a long run-on sentence yay me!

swift-whippet In reply to Dimintri [2007-03-30 04:39:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, being a sighthound fancier I must say that dogs bred for a warm climate do appreciate being appropriately clothed during winter. Thankfully I live in the tropics so my little IG doesn't have to wear coats. She doesn't even like her collar, and sits there with a martyred expression whenever we put it on. Also I think doggie costume parties have the potential to be good fun. so long as people don't go all Paris Hilton about their pups and actually bother to keep them responsibly and train them well, I really don't see the harm at all.

yes, that's exactly what the haircut is for. most people don't know this and are just like OMG SISSY DOG LOLZ.

I'm an animation student, so basically I hang around a lot of people that love cartoons and being silly. anyway it doesn't matter what you do and say when you're being relaxed and joking and blabbing, what matters is your attitude. that's true maturity, and you seem to have a good attitude to me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dimintri In reply to swift-whippet [2007-03-30 05:46:14 +0000 UTC]

yea, I can understand that, I wouldn't want to bring a popsicle for a doberman pincher inside of my house and let it have an abnormal purple nose some of the little costume parties I've seen... they were... over done... extremely overdone... yea...

muwahaha my brother is in the living room pouting now :3 more like dog thats not going to get hypothermia lolz

hehe, I don't like fighting unless its running around and playing tackle football then yea, so thats me otherwise I'm pretty laid back 'I don't care' person. Until the preps come and they need to be put in their place :3

Like about three weeks ago there was a big group in PE where a popular girl was all. "that doesn't go with your shoes and blah blah blah and I'm all "I don't give a shit, unlike you I don't waste my money on bat poop to put on my face, or wasting my time to look good. Not to mention I'm not so obsessivly lost in my vanity world that I think I can get anyone just because I know how to match some colors." The brat just couldn't think of a comeback :3 but thats pretty much a normal day for me, get teased, make them look like idiots. I'm past the 'I don't care' days stuff now :3 *ish proud* but she was a prep who picks on anyone so she had it comming anyways

but thats my maturity, I just don't put up with it, I didn't make it anything big, I just said what would dumbfound her, especially since the time left for the school day was nearly out But normally I just shrug my shoulders and don't give a shit, but she'd been picking on me since... 2nd grade in elementary and now I'm in 8th grade, so thats... 6 years of torment, and I just ended it and I'm somehow proud of myself. I dunno why but I am... But eh. I hope you don't think of me as a complete and total bitch now

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Dimintri [2007-04-01 19:00:53 +0000 UTC]

yeah but as long as it's not overdone, and nobody's forcing the dog to do anything it doesn't want to do, I don't see the harm in that. activities like that have the potential to be a lot of fun for both dogs and humans. my little girl doesn't even wear a collar since she dislikes them so much. she never goes outside without a halterleash and one of us supervising her, and she's at that age where all she wants to do is lie around in bed for most of the day anyway, so she's not really in any danger of getting lost.

seeing as I grew up on the other side of the world, I had no idea that American school politics really are, more or less, like the tv shows and cartoons show them as. that's rather interesting.

and eh, I've met and known several bitches - heck, I live with one - and all of them were very nice :3 -huggles her little IG-

Yea, if the clothes aren't like swimsuits or stripper clothes with mini skirts and the whole creepy nine yards. I can understand that older dogs are the exact same as they were when they were younger, but minus the boundless energy.

As embarassing as it is, Hollywood pretty much has a typical school or anything here perfectly portrayed. When somone falls or gets hurt everyone laughs, when somone's getting picked on nobody cares, its just typical here... which rather sucks

hehe my little bitch is a turd, she gets into the trash cans occasionally, and she's always on everyone's ankles, almost too playful, and always ready to wrestle. -looks down at her Dutch Smoushond-

LOL it's okay, just let it all out! I do agree with you though! I wish people could break the cycle by not buying the poorly bred dogs! Bust sadly, as long as idiots keep buying them, idiots will keep breeding them. As you say, it's all for the money.
Or family got our pedigree dogs from respectable Kennel Club registered breeders (actually the lady that sold us Lili is one of my dad's clients and she let us go visit the pups several time!)
More expensive than non registered breeders, but worth it because you know that the parents and the breeders have been checked.

swift-whippet In reply to Wolfdog [2007-04-03 01:02:44 +0000 UTC]

the main problem I think is that irresponsible breeders charge a lot less, and also that a lot of people think that having a dog is no big deal and can just go out and purchase one on a whim from these odious people. and of course it all ends in tears when they realise either that they've chosen a dog that was cute but didn't suit their lifestyles and abandon the poor creature at the pound, or the dog dies from some genetic health problem foisted on it by bad breeding. people don't realise that owning a healthy, happy dog is hard work, though it's a labour of love. it should be given more thought than just OMG LET'S GET A DOG YAY.
