Description 'kay. so I happened to read this comment on somebody else's deviation that basically said poodles were too girly to be real dogs, which of course made me fume a bit. if that comment hadn't been months old and none of my business I might have said something, but I felt it wasn't my place. so to placate myself I just drew George a lot, 'cause he tha man dog now. Here he is teasing Freddy in his new Hunting Class Clip, which is basically a shorter version of the Continental Clip. The Sporting Clip was cool, but I think this just suits the old boy much better. Fred was supposed to be giving George a dirty look, not looking sorry for himself, but I'll fix that when I colour this. Expect to see more Georgie Porgie, I love my all-dog poodle.

Oh, and I hereby declare that any poodle bashers must read this article. [link]
Let me explain that I can understand not fancying a breed - I can't say poodles are a breed I really fancy either - but to openly bash it and say things like that about it when you obviously don't know a thing about the breed beyond what you see in tv and the movies? that's a no-no. poodle-bashers, I don't say this often, but you suck.

of course not, I definitely don't believe that DOG BREEDING IS OMG EVIL AND SHOULD BE BANNED -coughs- just that with such an animal as the dog, that has to have had a certain amount of inbreeding at least to achieve the amount of variety within a species, a breeder has to breed responsibly or it just results in 'bad' dogs - bad temperament, bad health, the works. throwing two random dogs together in a shed at the appropriate time, breeding a bitch whenever she is in season and not pregnant, not bothering to research hereditary background for undesirable traits like genetic diseases and to avoid inbreeding more than necessary, breeding just so you can make a quick buck off a litter of OMGCUTEPUPPIES? that's not a responsible breeder who cares about their dogs and their breed and desires to make their breed better. that's a backyard breeder/puppy miller whose only concern is the money.

Poodles ftw. I don't personally care for the miniature's and toy's (mostly because I'm not much of a small dog person), but the Standards are pure love

Even with the Continental clip x3. Even better when it's corded.

Love the pic! its amusing hehe. I Dont entirely dislike Smaller dogs (notjust toys the small sized dogs in general) but I'd rather have a big dog anyday. Nothing against them theyre really sweet and most of em are cute but eh. I dunno It may have something to do with working at a local shelter and the fact that EVERYONE somes in looking for tiny fluffy dogs. The Big dogs around here get no love T_T. We've had the same crew of large dogs minus a few new ones and a few that got adopted for a year. when people go to look at the dogs they stop after the small dogs. Me and my boss are moving the small dogs to the back so they HAVE to look at the bigger ones to get there xP. Its sad around here that everyobne whose looking for a dog wanst like a 3 pound dog that'll stay 3 pounds. Most of the dogs in Louisiana .. well where I'm at anyways are black labs. unfortunatly no one wants them because theyre so common.we turn down ateats 3 to 4 people wanting us to take their black labs within a week. usually more than that. We are so overcrouded most of them being lab mixes its horrid. We were snding dogs on transports to like maine and stuff but thats stopped recentlyfor some reason. All Dogs need love! Thats why everyone likes different breeds. Me personaly have no favorate I pick a dog by personality right now my favories are my own Bingo, And 2 at the shelter bob and robin. Who just happen to be golden rethreaver mix and robins a hound mix. *shrug* yea... My line of thought on this topic just disapeared...

<3 to all the Dogs

My line of thought on this topic just disapeared...

Yeah, especially since this picture was about poodle stereotypes and not toy-dog haters x3 I never mentioned small dogs at all, in fact.

but yeah, I see where you're coming from. the sad part is that most people who own toy dogs usually treat them like they aren't dogs and result in bad temperaments. owning a dog isn't like getting a new refrigerator, it's a commitment and requires a lot of time, money and love. and I think too many people just don't put enough thought into it. they're just like LET'S GET A DOG YAY. why would people abandon their Labs anyway? they're lovely dogs if they're bred and raised responsibly.

however, the people I know, small dogs get no love. so it all depends on your perspective. I love all dogs but I get tired of stereotypes, so I try to change that with my characters.

YEa toy dogs around here i feel so sorry for the puppies. i seen them being lugged around at only a few weeks old. The can so easily get parvo or anything like that. Just for the owners can show em off. Once I have my own house Imma foster animals for the shelter so they dont get sick so easily there. Inn every litter we have had in the past yyear sadly enough one atleast has gotten very ill and died.. this past litter thanyou can see pics of in my gallery all died.. we havent a clue what was wrong with them. It wasnt parvo or distemper. The Vet couldn't find anything seriously wrong with them. and they were perfectly fine and went downhill in les sthan 24 hours... man I'm wayyy off topic agan.. haha sorry my mind just works too fast I guess. xP I'll leave you be now haha Have a Good evening and I look foreward to your next peice and seeing this one completed xP

that's so sad about all those dogs it's really tragic how bad breeding and overbreeding can do so much damage to the animals' health - and just so that irresponsible people can raise these dogs like they're some kind of animated stuffed toy. With a domestic animal that's been selectively bred to such an extent as the dog, I think we have a responsibility to make sure the gene pool is kept stable for future generations so that the healthiest, happiest puppies possible are born.
thank you for all your comments - don't worry, I enjoy talking to people ^^

I've had interesting experiences with poodles. I don't mind them, but I don't like their fur, for some reason. o_o;

My grandma has a black standard and he...humped. everything. he was psychotic. other than that, i dont remember him very well o-o

My mom had one, too..he was a nut case. not so much /crazy/ but he was PARANOID. like no other o_O; he broke everything because he'd try to launch himself under it if he heard a noise...-shrug-

Animals are silly, it's neat seeing all their different persnalities and temperaments

swift-whippet In reply to seirenitiy [2007-03-28 23:29:09 +0000 UTC]

It really is. You can't paste a specific cookiecutter personality on any dog just by breed alone, which is what people seem to do and just results in a lot of stereotypes that continue to prevail, like labelling poodles girly just because of their show clips. Each dog is different, but how a dog is brought up and trained really counts a lot in how they end up personality-wise.

Poodles actually are said to have really good coat quality; they're supposedly relatively low shedders and affect allergies less. interesting.

seirenitiy In reply to swift-whippet [2007-03-29 02:29:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's kinda neat :3 I think I've told you before that I have two Boston Terriers...they're totally different. The male is a scaredey cat, yet barks at ANYTHING and EVERYTHING and he's just plain HUGE. He likes chasing birds and pouncing on cats..the female is completely dominant and hates the male, unless it's cold and it's bedtime XD She only listens when she /wants/ or when she's in trouble - it's not that she's a bad dog, she just has a mind of her own. She listens when she needs to, though. I think they haven't gotten enough interaction with other dogs, because as soon as they see our neighbor's big ol lab, they instantly chase after it liek they want to kill him, but then once they get there, they just..stand. They don't even sniff him. o_o; Our other neighbor has a dauchsund, and she's like their BFF..they play with her. Weird animals <3

That's neat that they don't irritate allergies, that's probably why my mom had one. I don't really liek the texture of the fur, that's all. And low shedding = major plus! We had a husky and we used to collect her shedding fur and put it in a strawberry pot. The birds would take it and make nests with it :3 She was an outside dog, though. It would've kinda sucked if she was an indoor dog because of all the fur. But fluffy cute!

I dated a guy that had two mini poodles. They were attention whores to the max. They were cute, but..same thing with the fur. It's jsut a pet peeve of mine, I guess o_o *slapped*

swift-whippet In reply to seirenitiy [2007-04-01 19:22:35 +0000 UTC]

well, the fur would be different from that of a dog that didn't have to go into the water to retrieve things. maybe that has something to do with it? :3

Owning a std poodle, I can say i've definitely met more 'girlier' dogs.. i would put my own poodle in the 'dork' category more than the 'girly' category

I like the picture a lot though, it shows a poodle without giving that stereotypical sleek pampered pompous look you usually get with them ^__^

Yay standard poodles! I know someone else on dA who asked me to draw her standard boy for an art trade once, and he seemed like such a friendly, outgoing, silly dog from the pictures she had of him in her gallery. Not to mention all-dog.

LOL yeah, I was sick of that stereotype and created a couple of toy poodle characters that I tried to make.. well, not quite the anti-stereotype, but just different from your average 'pampered diva poodle'. After a suggestion from someone, though, I created George and never regretted it.

Silly people. I love Standard Poodles! Especially George. He's awesome. ^.^ I just don't like the toy ones so much. It goes along with my general dislike of toy dogs and the popularity they've recieved because of all the stars who carry them around. >.<

I went to Petsmart this weekend to browse the toy aisle, and I saw a woman getting some stuff for her Chihuahua. The thing was tiny. I ended up getting Ebon an extra large Kong and it was about the size of that little thing. To top it off, she had the thing in this pink and zebra-striped bag with fuzzy trim and it just looked absolutely rediculous. I'm definately the kind of person who doesn't like dogs that are small enough to be cat chow. (I'm serious, I think Albus would have tried to eat that dog if they lived in the same house.) I'm okay with dogs that you can carry around (for crying out loud, Basenjis are only around 20 pounds) but they should be big enough that you can jog with them, or at least walk at a good speed! Despite this, I do have to say the only decent toy dog I've ever met was the Pekinese my friend owned, Meechee, and she was delightful (and quite funny, she taught Ebon and his siblings to respect little dogs even though they outgrew her by the time they were a month old).

...Okay, I'll be quite now. >.<

And yet, you watch the person with a well-professed like for Toy dogs?

nothing wrong with being small in my book. -shrug- I dislike how everyone views and/or treats toys differently, like they're not dogs or like they're not like other dogs just because they're tiny. it just results in a lot of behavioural problems and people pointing fingers going LOLZ SISSY DOGS CAN'T DO ANYTHING. Toys are awesome and people need to respect them more. just my two cents. my ID has my full rant on the subject anyway.

Pekes are lovely. My friend has one and he is just so charming and friendly and wonderful and he sold me on Pekes forever ^^

basi In reply to swift-whippet [2007-03-29 04:17:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind that, and indeed I love your toy characters. The bigger toys aren't so bad, it's just the tiny ones that bug me. That Chuhuahua I mentioned couldn't've been more than a couple pounds and its eyes were bulging out of its tiny face. It's just not right! The whole "teacup toy" thing just bugs the heck out of me because they breed the smallest possible dogs together which can often result not only in health problems for the puppies, but the mother as well. There is a reason why responsible Brussles Griffon breeders breed the largest bitch possible to a smaller male. Anyway, I actually have several toy dogs in my stories. In the only true fantasy story I've ever written this princess keeps getting toy dogs from her suiters (a Chihuahua, a Pug, a Pomeranian, and a couple I can't remember right not), each with a wonderful personality (be it spunky, determined, loving, whatever), even though all she's ever wanted is an Irish Wolfhound.

Poor Meechee. She was around fourteen when I first met her. She was a show stock Peke, though her head wasn't square enough to make her a good show dog (she had the most beautiful coloring too, sable piebald. that black Shih Tzu at Westminster reminded me of her because it was just as striking). She started having seizures about a year later. I don't know if they were ever sure why. Still, she kept up with Ebon and his rambunctious brothers and usually bettered them in their little scuffles. I think her nasal passages were deformed because she snorted constantly and was the loudest snorer I've ever hears. They put her to sleep over the summer. When my friend finally told me, she started crying even though it had been several months since. I don't think I'll ever forget her.

Ah, yes, I lie. My memory has failed me. My cousin has a Toy Poodle named IQ. She's very old and slow, though. I've never heard her bark and she has this strangly stilted gate from arthritis, poor thing. She's incredibly shy and fearful, but never growls and will let you sit and pet her forever. When she came to the last two family reunions I felt so bad because she kept getting stepped on. My aunt has a Miniature Dachshund who has got to be the most active toy I've ever met (considering the others have all been over the age of ten). Katie is playful and friendly and completely my aunt's dog. She cries whenever my aunt leaves, even if she has plenty of company (i.e. the other thirty-odd people at the family reunion). The same cousin used to have what I always suspected to be a Tibetan Spanial, or at least a mix and they always said was a dachshund-terrier named Cupcake. She was a real meanie and nipped at everyone and growled at every other dog she met, though she would run if lunged at. She was the reason why my cousin ended up being bitten by a neighbor's Chow. They ended up giving her away when they moved. One of my friends from Highschool had a mini dauchshund named Barron (as well as a Rottweiler names Sampson who is HUGE and a giant teddy bear). He was everyone's best friend and loved to play with whoever even gave the faintest hint of wanting to. There's this one dog in our neighborhood who's a real terror. I think he's a pug-dachshund and is, frankly, quite ugly. One of our neighbors has a shaggy little dog (I honestly have no clue what it is, but it looks quite a bit like a havanese) who can be a terror too. They also have two incredibly annoying Chihuahuas who bark up a storm at everything and have chased Ebon around on more than one occasion. Overal, I think I've had more good experiences than bad. I downright love little IQ, Katie, and the late Meechee and Barron.

And look, I'm rambling again...

oh YES, that whole LET'S BREED THEM EVEN SMALLER WITHOUT ANY REGARD TO HEALTH PROBLEMS LOL. ick. The IG was originally almost ruined as a breed because some idiots decided to breed them even smaller than they were and ended up spoiling their good temperament, and no doubt would have given them genetic health problems too. almost ironically, IGs have been bred bigger in recent years. I met one in the park early last year that was a biggy Iggy, and he was so sweet too :3 I've also seen healthy, happy-looking larger Chis and Yorkies trotting about the streets (actually walking, and without those ridiculous-looking costumes they make them wear even when it's not cold), and it makes me happy to see that some of them at least are being brought up like normal dogs. and that story of yours sounds like you could publish it as a children's book. <3

Pekes really are little lions, from what I've heard and experienced. One of my friends at school used to have a Peke, and he said that dog was so protective of him - he had a funny story about how it attacked his friend when he made the wrong move. They might be brachycephalic, but they're such awesome little dogs :3

IQ actually sounds a lot like my Bella as far as temperament goes. Bella was never very comfortable around most other dogs when she was a puppy even, and it still takes her some time to warm up to people who don't bear food. Still, she's a lot more mellow than she used to be, and she puts up with a lot more. A lot of the dogs I've known have been small, if not Toys, and they've all been lovely.

eh, rambling. I never mind that, I like getting long comments and I tend to do that anyway :3

I think part of what draws me to fighting the cause of poodles and toy dogs is how everyone seems to view them as 'sissy dogs' or 'not real dogs', which boggles me. All dogs are 'real dogs', it just depends on how they're bred and raised. I've known both Maltese and Poms and found both breeds to be lovely - and the Maltese was such a big dog in a little package.

I remember having a Shih Tzu and people thought he was nothing but a puny little dog they could step over and tease, but eventually, he showed his big dog side to them. XDD
I see mainly Rottweilers and Pit Bulls around here since everyone thinks those are the so called "Real dogs".
I'm the only one in the city that actually owns a Siberian Husky, and everyone thinks she's a wolf, so of course the first interpertaion people are going to make about her is that she howls and kills people. Nothing wrong with that name, if she is a sweetie as you say :3 it's the dog inside that's most important, anyway.

I personally think that poodles are ew when they have a haircut (or how should I call it?) when you can see their skin..personally, thatΒ΄s ew to me. And IΒ΄m not a fan of royal poodles with any haircut anway.
But I think that calling a poodle "girlie"is plain stupid. I mean, poodles were HUTNIG dogs. as far as I know anyway. And poodles donΒ΄t cut their har themselves..I mean, people do that. If people would cut golden retrievers that way, they would be synonim for girlie too.

But I lurf small and toy poodles :3

I lurf your chars ^^
Your drawing style is adorable
Mini and toy (or is that the same?) poodles are allways adorable for me, but I donΒ΄t like royals when you can see their skin, like this one for example :[link]

I donΒ΄t know, I just donΒ΄t like to see their skin :/

minis are larger than toys.

you mean show poodles, I suppose, I'm not really sure what a royal poodle is. I think that's just the title of the deviation, not the type of poodle.
and I don't mind it, since there was originally a purpose for clipping their coats like that but that's just me anyway.

Yay I got it right xD

And for the royal poodle, I was convinced that it is larger than standard, and now I looked it up and it says that "royal" is actually a too large standard poodle, that is not allowed to participate in dog shows cause itΒ΄s higher than permitted for the breed.

There was a purpose? IΒ΄m really interested -can you tell me what is it?

You got me interested in poodles now...now I have an urge to draw one xD

That's very interesting, I didn't know that! super-large poodles - that's awesome ^^

They're clipped in that "bizarre" manner so that their heavy fur could protect the important parts of the dog (namely the chest, head, wrist and heel joints, and hips) from the cold of the water, while clipping enough fur off so that the poodle wouldn't get waterlogged while retrieving game. The little pompom on the tail serves as a 'flag' so that the hunter can see where his dog is. The clip isn't some kind of strange fashion statement - it's to reflect the poodle's original function and purpose in the field. The Portuguese Water Dog has a similar clip for the show ring.

That's good! go, go draw some! >D
