Two days after Sutherland arrived, it was Maud's turn to take the express, but there was no sign of her when the train was due for departure from Knapford Station. The passengers clamored about the platform, anxiously awaiting an engine. "Where's our engine?" They all asked. It was a question which Sir Topham Hatt wanted answered as well. Presently, Gordon was not on express duty for the day, as he was assigned to take the Limited and a few fast locals. He had a train due out of Tidmouth later in the morning when he passed through and saw the engineless express and the boiling crowd of passengers.
