Description The EM2 was originally designed during the planning state for the electrification of the Manchester, Sheffield, and Wath line to supplement the EM1 Bo-Bo engines in 1939. However, World War II and Nationalization happened, and the first prototype was not built until 1953, with almost no LNER influence in its design. For all intents and purposes, the EM2 was a longer version of the EM1 with a Co-Co wheel arrangement. Seven members of the class were built initially at Gorton Works and then sent to Metropolitan Vickers Dunkinfield for final assembly. The EM2s were known for having issues with wheelslip, and their EM1 counterparts had a switch installed which transferred current from the leading motors of the bogey to prevent such. The EM2s were not fitted with this and suffered accordingly on goods train work. In 1960, the speed limit of their line went down from 65 to 60 miles per hour, and their speed and acceleration was not enough to justify keeping them around. All seven members of the class were withdrawn and sold in 1969 to the Netherlands State Railways, where one was scrapped and cannibalized for spares. The remaining six were modified in the early '70s for use on Dutch rails and remained in service until the 1986. One is preserved in the Netherlands and two more have been returned to England for preservation there.
