The Greater Britain Class 2-2-2-2s were a product of LNWR Locomotive Superintendent Francis Webb's fascination with compounding which had began in the early 1880s, with 10 being built at Crewe Works between 1892 and 1894. They had three cylinders, with the two outside ones being high-pressure and the inner cylinder being low pressure. Along with their nearly superficially identical counterparts, the John Hick Class, their names were split across two nameplates, one on each wheel arch, meaning that they had two part names. As radical as these engines were, they did not last long in service as Webb's successor, George Whale's design philosophy of building simple, superheated engines prevailed and all were scrapped between 1906 and 1907, with none being preserved.
