Description
It’s Hexxus, and he is one of the scariest looking villains out there. Or at least that’s what I thought when I was a kid after watching Fern Gully for the first time. The fact that Hexxus has a skeleton form during a lot of the film is probably the reason he freaked me out as a kid... and now I feel old. Does anyone remember this guy?I originally drew this almost a year ago, and (as some of you may have noticed) I’m trying to finish up the old sketches so I can concentrate on the new stuff. Besides I love this character! My animation professor happened to be an effects animator for the slime and smoke on Hexxus and I loved hearing stories from her about the process. The slime that drips and flings off of Hexxus as he first transforms into his smoke form is amazing. *sigh*
I original had line art for this picture, but during the coloring process it got covered up and ended up looking better without it. I probably went a little crazy on the colors as well; I was having too much fun with this. Thankfully ~Clang55 was there to help keep me from going overboard.

On of the greatest animated villians EVER! This guy just oozed (oozed, get it ) scary, plus, thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean, I was terrified of skeletons as a kid, so that made him even more scary. And his song, oh man, his song, I can't get it out of my head!

He really is one of the greatest! *dead serious* He scared me to death as a kid, but I think that's why I like his so much now. You got to appreciate that kind of villain.

Ah, FernGully. I just saw this movie after 20 years of existance, and I was amazed that they could make make villans that scary.
Love your rendition here! I gotta grab the boyfriend; he loves this movie...and he loves this picture too.
Great movie done justice by a great picture.

Thank you so much, both of you. I'm glad you saw the movie again. It is such a great film and I like to think that Hexxus helps a lot with that. There are not very many films with villains like this. And the majority of animated villains that do come to mind are from older films.
Thank you again for your kind words, it means a lot to me!

One of the few memories i still have from when i was just a little kid, like maybe... 5 or 6, was a song called 'Land of a thousand dances', na, nananana, nananana nanana nanana, nanananaaa!
and this movie was one of the first animated cartoon movie i ever watched too, second being baba's kids... man, the memories.. but without a doubt, the one character that stuck in my head (evern if not fully clear) was that twisted, evil pile of black ooze which could appear like a skeleton, Hexxus, man that's one hell of a villain visually, almost as un-nerving as giygas just by looking at 'em, can barly remember the voice of Tim Curry for it but... man.. i wouldnt mind watching this old movie again some time, just as tad odd when your older

This movie certainly has a lot of memories for me too, thanks for sharing. It's a good movie and it was strange (but great) watching it again recently. Just because it's old (and a cartoon) doesn't mean it can't still be enjoyed. It's just one of those movies.

That could make a great fanfiction story! Ghostbusters go to Ferngully. It could be where the boys get a trip after being on a game show to Australia where the boys are set to have a good time but while visiting there in Sydney they go far east to Ferngully where a demon of sorts releashes Hexxus out of that tree and Hexxus has a plan to take over Sydney instead of Ferngully as he has minions of his own. Crysta starts to follow him and decides to make herself human size to disguise herself as a human with no wings yet falls in love with Peter and they have a relationship for a while. The Two with the rest of the team must try to stop Hexxus's plan.
What do you think?

I still think the purple is out of place, but asking you not to use purple is the same as asking Hexxus to stop trying to destroy the rain forest. Not going to happen.

But do you think Avatar is more for adults? the first Avatar movie was actually 1973's Fantastic Planet which is an excellent French-Czech Sci-fi fantasy movie that deals with giant blue aliens, weird alien lifeforms, humans vs. aliens, savage people, mystic tree where aliens meditate and that kind of thing. If you haven't seen it, watch it on youtube and you'll see why it also inspired Avatar.
Avatar was also inspired by Princess Mononoke, Atlantis, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind), Pom Poko, Heavy Metal, Dune, Castle in The Sky (aka Laputa), Star Wars Trilogy, Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country, Last of the Mohicans and even another great French animated Sci-fi masterpiece called LightYears (aka Gandahar) since Cameron is a fan of animation, Ghibli, anime, european animation, adult animation and Sci-fi/fantasy movies/novels.
Did it also reminded you of those movies i mentioned?

Swish42 In reply to JohnSpartan1982 [2011-05-01 00:23:51 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it actually does remind me of Princess Mononoke and Atlantis. Not so sure about Castle in the sky though, it's been a while since I have seen that one. All the other ones you've name though I'm nodding my head to in agreement. And Star Wars . . . a lot of recent films get their inspiration from that. All those are great movies that you've listed, I'm more a fan of the animated ones, but that's my taste. I have not seen Fantastic Planet, (I think), I will most certainly check it out though.
