Description
Taken at Lake Burrendong, Wellington N.S.W. on the 14.3.14 at 7:02pm EDST.Once the mature phase of the LP supercell had passed, it really started to put on a wonderful show. The combination of elements that aligned to do this was simply crazy.
The sunlight shining through onto the mountain range on the other side of the lake was so intense and added so much to the scene.
To see such a bright rainbow was a real treat too. It turned into a double rainbow shortly after this just as the sunset colours turned the clouds and rain/hail core into a deep burnt orange.
To be coming from a severe drought here at home and then to travel south to see weather like this was really cool.
The lake has also suffered from the drought and is only around 15% capacity here.

Epic! Brilliant shot mate. Sorry that we didn't cross paths while you were down this way. Not going to Tas this year so I might head up your way this year at some point for a change.

Thanks kindly Greg.
It was a fairly hectic trip once we were down your way. Jase and I shot out to Bowna to catch an ISS pass on the Tuesday night (around 8:50pm) and I see what you mean with the light pollution issues. Glad I don't have that to deal with up here
I'd say to aim for Sep-Oct storm season trip, but after last year's dismal failure storm-wise I'd be afraid to call that at this stage. There's definitely good galactic shots to be done here out on the fields though.
Let me know when and if you decide to do something. I may even be back down your way again soon.
All the best

Thanks Mike!
It was good to come back after all this time with something worthwhile. I'll have a couple more up soon. There's a real close return stroke in one of the earlier photos that I'll throw on here too. Looks like the ground was burning where it hit just out in front of me.
Hope all is going great!

I like the way the clouds kind of curve so that it focuses the eye on the lightning strike.

Hi Wiked,
These wide angle lenses really encapsulate the entire sky and it does make for a wonderful shot when the clouds seem to pull into the centre towards a subject.
I hope all has been well!

Now, THAT is just plain cool! A thunderstorm, a cool bolt of lightning and a rainbow! Great capture, my friend!

I bet it was. We don't get storms like that over here

That's probably not a bad thing. This was very severe! Large hail, flooding rains, lightning and damaging winds can be a costly side-effect of such wonders of nature
This was shot at 16mm so it was much closer and vastly larger than it appears here.
Hopefully you'll get to see a similar one *from a good distance* in time
