Description
This is a tutorial i wrote in 2009 to explain how i created the shading i used at the time. It was done using gradients in PaintShop Pro (PSP) an if you follow the steps you should be able to replicate it.the same sort of process can be used within other drawing programs, however the gradient tool (if it exists) may work in a slightly different way.
I have since moved on to use hand pixelled shading, however you can see examples of my gradient shading in gallery or on this page
You can find all of my other tutorials on this page: [link]

Nice guide, will have to try to make a emoticon in PSP some time... been using GIMP for my emoticons a lot, but it doesn't hurt to try and branch out program wise .

I have Photoshop, Paint.NET, and GIMP 2. However, I have minimal experience with emote making and all of these programs. What do you suggest I do?

When making emotes its best to try out several different programs and just finding one you like. The 'best' program might not be the one for you. However if you need some help there's loads of tutorials over at #Emotication

I, personally, like to shade by hand, but this tutorial is still very helpful.

So THAT is how you gradient fill with PSP. Makes complete sense now. I never could figure out how I could get different colors from what they offer. Very helpful!

I was going to experiment with additional shading, but the light area on my emotes is in the wrong direction for it to work
