you can see there my way of scanning and adding levels to your scanned image on PC through photoshop~hope it will be helpful for someone~

I usually simply use the HP scanner driver software and lower the gamma level as well as some 'midpoint' level and highlight level. Then I'll use Microsoft Office Picture Manager to 'auto adjust' and 'enhance colour'
