Description
A full scale replica of the Kingdom Key from Kingdom hearts (Sora's Keyblade). Its 43 inches long and weight approximately 5 pounds. In this photo the key chain is missing since it wasn't done at the time of this photo.Sorry I'm skimping on the info for now. I'll write up a more detailed post later this week... or maybe next week.Β

This is beyond amazing. I would pay good money for this. How much would you want for another one of these. I seriously would pay you for one of these. I hope to hear back soon. Thank you!

What are the paints you used, specifically?

Thanks man! I was wondering when you'd get a chance to see this thing. I'm really proud with how it turned out. I need to mount it on my wall or something XD

I rarely come on, but when I do, I look through all updates. Glad I didn't miss it. If you made Mickey's Key, you could even mount them like crossed swords. Though that would be a lot of work for such a reason.

I'm loving the handle guard. Such perfect geometry and smoothness! Whats it made of?

Thanks!
Everything that is cylindrical is made up of various layers and PVC or ABS pipe. Just the plain ole stuff you'd find in your hardware store's plumbing section.
The majority of the handle and the key tip/thing? has a foam structure inside to hold my sheets of plastic in place while I was gluing them together. I used sheets of 1mm styrene on the outsides of those parts. It turned out great and looks and feels like those parts are made of one solid piece.
Oh and some bondo. Any surface that had cracks, gaps or needed to be smoothed/blended got some bondo.
I need to make a proper write up of this build but I've been busy lately. Hopefully soon though!

Thanks! Clean lines was what I was going for. Also means all that sanding was worth it =]

This looks soooo amazing! The handle texture really makes the whole design pop! Love how the key edge turned out as well.

Thanks! I'm really happy with how the handle turned out. All that filing really paid off.

I was worried how a flat yellow would look on mine, but it looks really good! What did you use for your grid pattern on the handle?Β

The flat yellow wasn't my first choice to be honest. I originally wanted a metallic yellow. Not gold though... more like metallic fleck car paint. I eventually decided I didn't have the time(or money) to experiment with various paints. I ended up grabbing a can of flat yellow I already had and gave it a try. Turned out way better than I expected so I'll keep it for now. I *may* re-paint the handle in the future.Β
For the grid pattern I made a repeating pattern in photoshop that matched the circumference of the handle. Printed that out and made sure it fit perfectly and seamlessly around the handle. Glued the paper pattern on and used a triangular file to file the pattern into the handle. Once I was done filling in the grooves I lightly sanded off the remaining paper and glue.

I used duplicolor's metalcast anodized yellow for my kingdom key and x-blade, and they both turned out excellent!
That's a smart idea. I was able to get a sorby texturing tool for my lathe, i'm still getting used to it. Your's looks very well done.

Thanks for the tip on the anodized Duplicolor paints. I'll have to give those a try in the future.
Wait... your telling me... there's a tool.... that does that spiraling diamond pattern somewhat automatically? I looked up videos and that thing is down right magical.Β
Ps, I took a look through your DA and your blog and your work is phenomenal! And the fact that you build mostly in wood is hardcore. I mostly build with plastic and foam since I have limited access to power tools. Seriously impressive stuff! XD

No probs, i did a review on youtube about the paint as well.Β
As for the tool, as far as i know the kit is the only way to get the main tool, but it works great after you get a feel for it. When i did the dark kingdom key, i used my dremel with a disc shaped high speed cutter which worked alright, but it was a but hard to keep the lines straight.
thanks! I've been wanting to try layering plastic sheets to carve, but there arent any locally. All your work looks really clean and smooth! That's something i need to work on with most the wood i use having grain that makes it bumpy.

*Whoops, I thought that was after what I was originally going to type. Β Sorry for double comment, but forgot to mention that this is quite a nice replica!

Thanks! As to why build a Keyblade? Why build any other prop? It all depends on what people are inspired or motivated to build. Different fandoms might mean different things to different people. =]
No worries on the double comment.
