Description This one is a first for me, in that I've never really drawn mature male. I've never had to work with white hair, or a beard--both of which were a huge pain in the ass and as you can see, they didn't really turn out all that well. But I guess there's a first time for everything. Because no one has responded to my request for stock photos that meet certain criteria, I've had to go out and find my own stuff. I need to start learning how to draw older males and I really don't want to start drawing celebrities, so I've decided on the "Great Minds" series of portraits. What better place to find old men than Academia, after all.

For those of you who don't recognize him, this is Sigmund Freud. Unforunately I'm a bit pressed for time so I can't really get into too much details yet (but I will edit this description later and include my reason for appreciating him). I was really surprised by the wide variety of people who know what he looks like that mentioned it while I was working on this one, which I thought was pretty cool. Anyway, the reference I used is a really popular photo, and it depicts all of Freud's most famous character and phyisical qualities except his famous thick-frame glasses. Sorry about the inconsistencies all over the paper. I had some difficulty scanning this one because it covered most of my page, which was just a bit too large for my scanner bed.

My complaints... I'm not happy with a few bits of the clothing that seem flat, I don't like the beard too much, and I'm not satisfied with the (viewer's) left sife of the face because the shading seems really artificial, even though it's similar to the original. Otherwise I'm really happy with this one. I'm really happy that it occured to me to draw these portraits, and I hope I can keep it up for a long time until I've got a collection of all my favourite theorists. Anyone who's good with thin strands of white hair and facial hair, please share your expertise. I have seen some amazing portraits recently that have accomplished something I simply can't with regards to these features.

Anyway, no more time. 0.7mm HB mechanical pencil, paper smudging sticks, darkened with Photoshop 5.5.

Great job!! I really like the shading you've done for the clothing, etc. I agree; the beard does look a bit flat, and I'd like to offer some helpful advice, but I just can't do facial hair!! lol, anyway, nicely done!!

it is quite difficult to draw mature subject with that grand white hair ! ........ that's when erasers&white pencils come in handy ......... but it certainly is fun ! all the attention to details ...every wrinkle and facial nuance of sagging skin ! ..... the clothes seem a bit off to me only because the buttons are soo definitve ... a few darker strokes to add crispness and balance w/the buttons could be worth looking into .............. overall this is , at the size i view this at , very good & well proportioned..... i knew it was sigmund ....

Not such a fan of Freud, although he raised some interesting points. I am however a fan of this piece.

interesting....i like the picture in itself, however the contrast could be a bit sharper, possibly clean up the pic a bit, lighten up the grey and give it a brighter look to make it pop out a little.
nicely done though.

Nice work! For thin strands of white hair, you can use the negative space created by drawing dark lines close together, or you can try using white charcoal pencil (which I find doesn't work well as it creates a bluish cast) or using a vinyl eraser or eraser pen cut to a fine edge to "draw" white lines in a dark area.
