The VLEP-22 (Variable Lethality Energy Pistol) is wireless ranged electric shock weapon that uses a 3 lasers linked to 3 laser sights to create spaced conducting ionized channels through the air to deliver modulated electric current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles resulting in pain and broad neuromuscular incapacitation or death by electrocution. The VLEP-22 has an effective range of about 20-25 meters (assuming earth-like conditions) and operates semi-automatically with a brief, almost unnoticable, charge up time before the discharge.

The weapon is explicitely designed as a lethal weapon with less-lethal options and not considered a less-lethal weapon system in any jurisdiction. The settings are designated "light", "heavy" and "maximum" and explicitely not "less-lethal" and "lethal" as this would only be true with unaugmented humans and a handful alien species with similar levels of resisitance to electricity and modulated electrical currents. In reality the effect on target can vary greatly between humans with cybernetic and/or biological augmentations and the various alien species integrated into many human societies including the Union of Free Systems. In fact that reality has led to the widespread abondonment of electroshock weapons as less-lethal options in a law-enforcement context and are usually only allowed to be carried by specially trained officers as a "special purpose weapon".

In a civilian context these weapons are even rarer as they have the same legal status as any "destructive" directed energy weapon, meaning they are outlawed on many worlds and undesirable compared to more directly effective options where they are legal to own and/or carry.
