Description Painting this really made me feel better. I painted non-stop and let it all out, so to say.
I tried to reduce my use of special effects tools but in the end I only avoided the dodge/burn tool and used pretty much everything else.
That creature belongs to my oldest made-up species, they exist for about twelve years now. Well, not really made-up, rather based on some weird toy I had. In 'my world', they have the same function as coyotes or (small) wolves. They're playful, intelligent creatures and come in a large variety of colors and patterns.
Done entirely in Photoshop.

And yes. Please don't mention the tail feathers.

There are other types of griffins than hippogriffs.
And this animal was created before JKR even began writing.

Very inspirational - I want one.

Yep... somewhere in the comments on this piece someone accused me of stealing Hippogriffs from JKR... e.e woot.

Well, JKR ain't the only one who uses hawsybirds. There was a talking one in that Chronicles of Narnia flick that came out last year, so be happy in your creation!!

Heh. Gryphons go back to acient Greek mythology, and this isn't even one. No out-of-species parts there, except for the four-leggishness.

I remember now (mere seconds after posting the first message)!! They're called hippogriffs!! I thought your hawk was a hippogriff.

...I still prefer to call 'em hawsybirds...

This is such a neat creature, I love the design (it would be very neat to see one of these standing up or running, just to show its looks off).
It looks very wise and determined, a proud and strong creature...
It's feathers look so soft and warm, I want to pet and scuffle around it’s belly feathers (I wouldn’t dare to do that though ).

Beautiful CGing--those are some fluffy feathers, there. =0 The background is also deserving of some gawking.

I wonder if they would, if domesticated, puke to show their affection, as a friend of mine complains that his large birds do to him.

Eep... you're not serious are you? That is, if you try to tell me I'm violating JKR's copyrights with this... oO Do you see any ressemblance to a horse in there? This isn't even a gryphon, which don't belong to anyone but are mythical creatures. As I said I based off a toy I got when I was nine years old. This thing doesn't even have wings...

I really like this creature. It is a nice mix of different animals.

I think that you made the tail feathers look very good. I like drawing birds but i always end up doing their tail wrong.

The background kicks ass. I wish I had the patience to make a real background like this which is something I am quite sure I'll be able to do.

paraphrase [2004-08-22 12:50:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm always partial to avian characteristics, but the way you were able to add feathers to a quadraped's body, and make them flow so well (Not to mention the sheer depth of the forest) means I can honestly say it's far more then positive bias that makes me like this painting.

Koeryn In reply to Tacimur [2004-08-22 15:16:04 +0000 UTC]

Haha, sorry, i guess you havent read the Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey. the Wyrsa (as far as i remember), were created by a dark mage as bassically hunting dogs to track people that he wanted, but he died, and they got loose and sorta wander the different plains of existance.

Bassically theyre pretty good sized, and look like a cross between a pit viper and a wolf or a fox or something. Very nasty lil buggers, real tuff too.

but yours is really really spiffy ^_^
