Description You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file, as it's a PDF. You can download it here .

Please, if you or Download, please leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Here is a tutorial that I've meant to do for a while now, but really pushed to have finished before school started.

This is basically how I draft my kimono/yukata and faki-mono outfits (flip through my gallery for examples of some of them). A lot of people seem to have problems with them, and I had a lot of requests for this tutorial, so I hope you all appreciate the 8 hours it took to do this (and in a PDF, no less!)

This is really detailed, so that if you're new to sewing, you can follow it! If ~kellin could follow it, I have no doubt anyone can do this! So give it a try!!

I tried to document every step that you need to do as clearly as possible, so you shouldn't get lost! With lots and lots of technical illustrations!

You may also find my Pre Tied Obi Tutorial [link] useful in addition to this one, so check it out!

I think there could still be a few spelling/gramatical errors floating in this, so I'm sorry about those! Also, this is the first time I've made a PDF, so please be kind and let me know if there are any issues - I've checked and re-checked it through, but if I did something weird, please let me know. I'm still new to using InDesign (most of the work was done in Illustrator) so there may be some issues there

I would ask that you do not sell anything you make with this tutorial. I know that there isn't a way to enforce this, so I'm appealing to your conscience.

Any questions? Just ask! I'm always glad to answer!

If you make something from this tutorial, throw me a link so I can see! That's the reason why I do tutorials, to see what other people can come up with!!

I think it would take forever. The stitches might come out strange.

Sorry for the late reply, but I definitely think you should try it! Just don't be afraid of seeing - the true secret to being good at it is to do it a lot, and throw it out and start over again if it gets too frustrating. Sewing isn't a "natural talent" - you learn it only from doing it, and failing a lot. You actually learn a whole lot more with sewing by failing than succeeding all of the time just try it, and use cheap fabrics so it's not such a big deal to throw something out and start over (cottons are perfect for learning, and cheap)

I definitely will make a tutorial for the bottom part! I didn't even think of that!

And, I have a tutorial for a circle skirt, which is the base I use for most of my personal wa-loli outfits :3

Hehe, I noticed that, too, when I was first learning how to sew, and especially when I did more advanced cosplay pieces! I tried to make it easy enough to follow, but still show more advanced ways of changing it to meet your needs :3

Thank you so very much!!

Hooray! I'm very happy to hear that! I tried to make it the simplest to follow (cuz it's not an "authentic" kimono) because that was a huge frustration of mine when learning how to sew (and especially do cosplay!)

Sigh, I know I'm way late on coming upon this, but I'm considering dressing up as Nou Hime (from Samurai Warrior) for this coming Halloween. Obviously there may be a need to alter the patterns a bit, but I was wondering if you hand an tips.

i love it but when you say measure out kimono length for making the main front/back parts, do you mean just the top or the whole thing, top and skirt?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

taeliac In reply to jada423 [2010-09-12 18:48:35 +0000 UTC]

It is really up to you - usually, I make kimono as two separate pieces for cosplay purposes (easier to wear, and more flattering on western figures) but if you want this to be one full length kimono, then use that length. If you want kimono top + separate skirt, just use it for the skirt :3

Hello, I read this description long time ago and today just remembered when I have searching for original yukata pattern. I have found one and also few great projects based on it, so I think it is both right and works.

I have found also some kimono&yukata info, seems quite good:

Hah, as you can see, I'm also not prompt at responding to messages. Your tutorial made me a lot less nervous about the project, especially when I was looking through more traditional patterns, which are super scary. That said, I kind of ran out of time on the whole thing, and, uh, didn't get any sewing done But! I hope that once I have access to a sewing machine again I'll resume, and, to cut to the chase, thanks again for the pattern.

I'm happy to possibly help! You should make one just for the heck of it (if you go to conventions, it's a good Sunday morning/late at night thing to wear that is actually comfy ) because there are so many pretty fabrics out there now!

Terezi In reply to ??? [2010-06-15 04:19:38 +0000 UTC]

I have been collecting vintage Japanese fabrics, kimono and obi for some years now.
I don't sew, but maybe sometime I can convince my daughter to sew this for me, or maybe I'd even commission something using my own fabric. Your designs are definitely the BEST wa-loli 's I've seen yet!
Not frou-frou - they are bold and striking, and would work for older, or somewhat larger women - like ME.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

taeliac In reply to Terezi [2010-09-12 18:52:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh man... I would love to collect more than the random few kimono I get my paws on (I have this ... obsession ... with childrens kimono I can't stop myself from buying them!)

I would love to try to make something fun for you, and I'm actually really, obscenely happy that it's not just me, then, that likes the kind of more bold, graphic things, and less about all the frills and lace and whatever else one can find to tack on it And, you mean "Like BOTH of us "

Just letting you know that I'm off to buy fabric to make your kimono! Well, I should say, a kimono I made using your tutorial. I took out a book from the library that has a pattern in it but it was too complicated! (I think it was for a real one. My head was spinning) And all I needed was just the body of it...
So thank you a bunch. :3 I'll be sure to post pictures!

Oh My...`taeliac! You are a goddess. Your clothing/costumes are so beautiful.

Thank you so much for sharing your tutorials! I am trying to use this tut to make a Waloli outfit for Anime Expo in Los Angeles 2010. This will be my first time dressing loli, but my 3rd year attending. Since I'm a large set woman, I'd figure this would be flattering on me. That, and the pattern seems easy enough ^__-.

Any tips or advice you can give a big girl like me?

Also, I found a nice large piece of fabric at a local thrift shoppe. It has a tag on it that says Veia collection by Burlington no iron percale, 50% cotton 50% polyester. It also says it's 81" by 104". Looks like an already hemmed curtain; I just had to get buy it though...it's purple! lol Any idea what it is, and if it will be a good fabric for a Yukata Waloli top and circle skirt?

Thank you so much, and keep up the fabulous work.

OH EM GEE! I just stumbled upon your other account (taeliac stock) and almost died when I saw the Lilac walolita dress you have posted there.

[link]

I humbly ask if you can grant me permission to use the pattern for my Waloli dress for Anime Expo. Of course, I understand if you don't want to share your pattern with anyone. Lord knows it's frustrating when you find out someone is stealing your artwork, be it clothing or literally artwork.

Tips? Suggestions? ^__^
