Description You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file, as it's a PDF. You can download it here .

Please, if you or Download, please leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Here is a tutorial that I've meant to do for a while now, but really pushed to have finished before school started.

This is basically how I draft my kimono/yukata and faki-mono outfits (flip through my gallery for examples of some of them). A lot of people seem to have problems with them, and I had a lot of requests for this tutorial, so I hope you all appreciate the 8 hours it took to do this (and in a PDF, no less!)

This is really detailed, so that if you're new to sewing, you can follow it! If ~kellin could follow it, I have no doubt anyone can do this! So give it a try!!

I tried to document every step that you need to do as clearly as possible, so you shouldn't get lost! With lots and lots of technical illustrations!

You may also find my Pre Tied Obi Tutorial [link] useful in addition to this one, so check it out!

I think there could still be a few spelling/gramatical errors floating in this, so I'm sorry about those! Also, this is the first time I've made a PDF, so please be kind and let me know if there are any issues - I've checked and re-checked it through, but if I did something weird, please let me know. I'm still new to using InDesign (most of the work was done in Illustrator) so there may be some issues there

I would ask that you do not sell anything you make with this tutorial. I know that there isn't a way to enforce this, so I'm appealing to your conscience.

Any questions? Just ask! I'm always glad to answer!

If you make something from this tutorial, throw me a link so I can see! That's the reason why I do tutorials, to see what other people can come up with!!

Kimonos are right-wrapped, not left. Left means the wearer is deceased.

I actually thought I fixed the image - I was too lazy to go in and fix it when I first uplaoded it (burnt out from a day and a half of Illustrator craziness to create the whole tutorial) and face-palm'd when I saw that I had uploaded it backwards... I should fix it one of these days, but haven't really cared enough to

I really want to see the tutorial, but as Adobe costs money to download, I can't Is there any possibility that you could link it otherwise?

Actually, Adobe reader is free to download from their site :3 A lot of computers now have pdf readers built in, too!

Only the Adobe products with lots of features cost money. You should be able to download a free version of adobe reader x that will let you view the pdf file. Here is the link: [link]
Just click on the "download now" yellow button.

Hehe, you definitely should! And, even if you screw it up, just use cotton fabrics, so it would be cheap (and, they make fun just plain tops, too )

I'm always happy to help!

thank you so much! i've been looking for something like this for ages!
i wanna make my own too! however... i still don't have my own dressform, nor do i know how to make one
... how dreams shatter -_-

taeliac In reply to Sakura2189 [2011-04-06 18:23:22 +0000 UTC]

You don't need a dressform to sew, no worries :3 you can just keep trying it on yourself, or be sure to take good measurements (if it's a really complicated outfit, make it out of a cheap fabric before using an expensive one, to be sure the pattern works) and be careful when sewing it!

The best way to learn to sew is just to dive into doing it - and this is a pretty good beginner one, because it doesn't have to fit like perfectly, like a corset

wow thanks so much, i am new to cosplay and it's tricky to figure how to sew a kimono, so I'll use this for personal use As i want to cosplay a japanese traditionally dressed character, so this is perfect! I'll report if it works for me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Joichiroll [2011-04-06 18:24:28 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem! I definitely understand the pain of making kimono - I had to play around with it for a while before I found a way I liked making them (that was quicker and easier than the traditional way :dies

Definitely let me know how it goes, and if you get stuck or whatnot, don't hesitate asking, I'll do my best to help how I can Even if I am slow to respond to most things

I have a few question about the collar:

how long do the strips have to be?
and do both of the strips have to be two layered? (or do I have to cut the strips at the fold like with the body of the kimono)

Thank you for the tutorial I tried it out and apart from the part with the collar I understood everything :3

taeliac In reply to 1sango27 [2011-01-18 18:37:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Just try it! Expectnto screw it up and do it again, but that's the only way to learn how to sew! Don't be afraid of it - it's just fabric, and if it becomes too bad, just throw it away and start again! You'll have learned more by screwing up than anything else can teach you! I still throw things away and start over all of the time, it's the real 'secret' to sewing (that, and using cheap fabric, cuz of that exact reason - cottons are the best way to start and learn )

aww thnk u or the wonderful speech ^_^ but im ocd bout projects if it gets screwed up im fixing it O.o i cnt throw things away so easily im serious O.o i save almost anything i think will be useful but i have a rat so if sumtin is gonna be thrown away it is given to her lol and she has a ball ^_^ so THNK U ^_^ i appreciate wut u said cuz it is true and my first fabric was silk O.o that was fun o.O and then soem stretchy material that wrinkles up if u sew it while its stretched lol O.o but was fun

Definitely do! It's a lot of fun, and fairly easy, too!

Oddly enough, I look up to people like you - I can't sew smaller things very well... I tried a purse not too long ago, and it was kind of sad

Thanks so much for putting this tutorial up; I don't think I could have done it without it! XD I used this one and the one for the obi bow to make a Kotoko costume. It was originally made for a chobits skit but my team got together for a photoshoot recently so I figured I'd post a picture since you said you'd like one. Enjoy~ [link]

I don't own a sewing machine, so this is my only option XD

Absolutely. Anything can be sewn by hand. It'll take longer than by machine, of course, but you'll appreciate it even more when you're finished.

After all, how did people sew before the invention of the sewing machine? Just a thought.
