Description This tutorial took a lot longer to put together than I had imagined it would! But, I certainly hope I covered everything in a relatively easy to follow manner.

This tutorial is on how to make a simple petticoat

It walks you through deciding how long you want your petticoat to be, how to do the math to figure out how much fabric you need to buy, fabric suggestions, sewing options, as well as some notes from me towards the end on adapting this to work with different styles.

Basically, I've covered everything I can possibly think of for helping you to make your own petticoat for cosplay, re-enactment, or just for fun.

In fact, you can even make this and wear it as a skirt, if you want :3

As always, there is math involved. Don't fear it, but, at the same time, I'm just going to ignore questions about it - I've tried to explain it to the best of my ability in multiple different ways. If you don't understand, I don't think I can help you any more than I have tried to already ^^

Because I'm awesome
I've even included a PDF copy of this tutorial for you to download , print off and write all over.

i'm kinda a larger person, therefore there is a pile of fabric that is to be my petticoat. are there any suggestions on gathering a LOT of fabric?should i cut the tube seams apart and try to gather it in sections?

Ooh!!! How helpful! I'm actually working on a movie with some friends of mine and we plan on creating costumes for it from clothing we get from a thrift store, but I'm afraid we might need a couple of petticoats. It's based in the colonial period so this is extremely useful!

Aganin , i love your tutorials. And anyone who would steal your ideas and clain as theirs is a fool. YOur not going to believe this but i was asked not long ago to help consrtuct a "southern belle" costume and she wanted several petticoats ... i was fine with the dress but i told her that she was on her own on the petticoats. I believe i will send her this link as see what she thinks. YOU ROCK!

I just finished making a petticoat using this! It turned out fantastic! Your tutorial was super easy to understand and I didn't have the urge to shoot anything even though I was working with tulle!
I haven't tried it under a skirt yet, so I don't know exactly how much poof it's going to provide, but it looks good so far! (I'll post a picture when I can find what I did with my camera )

Perhaps you might want to make the font a bit darker? It is a touch hard to read.
Thanks.

I noticed that, too, but only after uploading - there are like 80 text layers, so editing them would be a bit of a pain (actually, a lot of a pain) but the PDF version is black and white text, and the same, so easier to read :3

Thanks for the tutorial! At first i didn't get the math because i couldn't figure out which way you were cutting the fabric, but after processing it for a while I get it now. So yes you were very comprehensive on the math (this is coming from someone who struggles horribly in all forms of math.) Thanks for taking the time out of your perpetually busy schedule to make a tutorial again!

Thanks so much for this!!! Although, TBH, after making one once, I hated the process so much that it will be awhile before I am brave enough to work with tulle that much again! (hm...but a new ruffle foot may just be enough to muster up some courage...)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Andichan04 [2011-01-27 19:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha! I thought the same thing - I usually just buy petticoats when I can, because I hated the fight of making one all out of tulle!! That's why this one is specifically for cotton with tulle at the bottom

If your ruffle foot is anything like mine, the tulle can get caught in the foot part, but it's not bad if you take it slowly :3

I still hat making them, though

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NotaSouthernGirl In reply to taeliac [2011-01-29 17:39:03 +0000 UTC]

my grandmother did a very interesting trick to keep the tulle from snagging on the foot she put cello tape across the tip. But then she got weird and made a "tulle attachment" out of thin tubbing that curled up so it would snag. But i am with you all. TUlle sucks. the best place for it in in my bathroom scrubbies. HUGS.

Thank you so very much!

I've been assigned the task of making my own costumes as Aunt Eller in a high school production of Oklahoma, and I'm sitting thinking, "What the heck am I going to do about a petticoat? I don't have time to figure it out myself!"
