Description
You can view the video tutorial hereThis is a text-based supplement to go with the video for making sewn wefts for wigs.
This is how I learned how to make them, and I hope it helps you out, too. I know that there are many different methods out there, but I have not had any success with the "no sew" wefts made with caulk (the hair tends to pull out, even out of wigs I've purchased from the 'originator' of that method, which shed even worse than my attempts at home-made one's) and I take exception to most of the other tutorials out there by cosplayers - there are certain aspects of wefts that just get ignored or bowled over just because.
I dun like that, so here is how I've learned how to do them, and I hope you can learn something from them, too.
There will be a follow-up later on (i.e. whenever the hell I can get filming it) about how to sew the wefts into a wig.
Please, I beg of you not to repost/redistribute/steal this tutorial.

This is the best weft tutorial I've found, and now I have the confidence to begin. Thanks so much for making it.

Okay, I have to ask, do you use real hair, or the fake hair? What kind do you use?

I usually use synthetic hair for these things - usually, Kanekalon (I think that's how you spell it ) bundles of hair. I've worked with real hair, but it's way easier to actually ventilate (knot) in than synthetics, although it takes forever to do

I just need to say this...I love you! Thank you so much for sharing the fact you use an iron and ruler to help fold and crease the wefts.

Hehe, I'm glad to help how I can!
I just did a wig this past week, and couldn't find a ruler to use, so I actually used a straightened out hanger wire to help push and hold the fold, I may do another photo tutorial on it, cuz it worked out pretty well, too :3

That's amazing. :3 I'm so glad that you're willing to share your technique!!
Honestly, thanks to this technique you've shared I'm no longer worried about fighting with the wig fibers as much. :3 Now I just need to pray that my sewing machine doesn't rebel again.
I honestly don't think I can say thank you enough. :33

Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I can't wait to have an opportunity to use it. I've made a few of my own hair pieces and wigs (by the seat of my pants!) and this method probably would have saved me some trouble. Can't wait to see more!

I'm hoping to get to do one of those shortly - I may have just gotten a wig order, so that would give me no excuse not to film it, or at least write it up

Is some tutorial for how to attact these to a wig coming up? I've tried it with many failed/bad looking attempts xD

taeliac In reply to Hansku [2010-03-15 18:00:23 +0000 UTC]
I'm hoping to get one done soon, but alas, it hasn't been happening as quickly as I hoped it would, but I can give you the quick and dirty in type, and see if that helps
What you need to do is set the weft in the wig where you want it, under whatever layers of hair and that sort of thing, and pin it in place - it's best to use those big, yellow headed quilting pins so you can find them again Put as many pins in as you need, but don't go too overboard, cuz you'll wind up stabbing yourself (learned from experience).
Then, take the wig and flip it inside out and put it on a head form - if you have one that is already the size of your head (usually 21" or so) that is the best, but if you just have a styrofoam one, try adding a bit of padding to it, or keep the weft rather loose when you're pinning it in ~
To sew it in, it's easiest to use a curved needle - you can find them at JoAnn's by the upholstery stuff. They're great because they come back to you when you're sewing, but are a little tricky to get used to using!
Thread it up with a heavier thread, or use a regular poly thread doubled over, and hand sew it in like you would anything - keep the stitches about 3/4" apart for the best effect, or a bit closer if you're going to be brushing and styling it a lot
I hope that makes sense!!

I could kiss you at the moment! I've been trying to figure out how to give those crappy costume wigs some fullness. My first experience with wigs put me off doing cosplays which required me to wear a wig, but now I hopefully can whip up something decent for my Kei-ou (from Juuni Kokki or The Twelve Kingdoms) cosplay.
I love your tutorials so much! They are so helpful for someone as inexperienced as me ^__^ Thank you!!!

Hehe, it definitely will help! I don't know if you can work with the really cheap wigs, but it will help use cheaper wigs and add some body to them
I know what you mean, though - wigs are such a pain sometimes! If you're doing a really long wig, though (I keep forgetting to add this to the tutorials XP), you'll probably want to do another line of straight stitching over the zig-zag once it's folded over, just to lock the really long hair in place when you brush it I wound up loosing like 25% of the hair I put into one because I didn't do that XP

Thanks for the advice! Would you recommend a particular wig brand that would be less stressful to style? I found with really cheap wigs they don't sit properly and there is barely anything there to style! Any tips would be greatly appreciated

taeliac In reply to JMai [2009-03-24 23:38:13 +0000 UTC]
Hrm... well, I usually buy the one's from Amphigory.com for various cosplay purposes - if they're cheaper than say $25-$30 for a shorter wig, you're going too cheap, and they're going to be a pain to work with - sub-par fiber that is kinked, and makes your life a living hell

Yes!! I'm working on a few pieces for myself, and using this method to make the wefts, and then put them on toupee clips. I just need to get my hair cut, to get them cut to the right length So, long answer is yes

this was fun to watch just because it was like a one sided visit with you i've never done anything with a wig but now can see how easy it would be to make a weft. i was wondering if you used a press cloth when ironing, would that help keep the hair from melting? i got one when i was in 8th grade *i hate to say that was 40 years ago but it was* it is a shear fabric and works great on most delicate things i iron.

I actually think that would help a lot ~ I have a teflon one, and I've considered digging it out and using it, I'm just wayyyyyyy too lazy to do it
Ha, one sided indeed In person, with another snarky person around, it can be dangerous

This is really great, The video tutorial was awesome too
I had no idea wefts were that easy! (well i suppose you made it look easy) XD but i thought they'de be a thousand times more technical. Thanks for putting this up ^_^

taeliac In reply to unasaki [2009-03-16 19:43:36 +0000 UTC]
They really are that easy, though!! If you're doing really long hair, you may just need to do another line of straight stitch + zig zag once it's folded over to be sure you caught everything, but they're super simple to do
Hehe, I thought they'd be harder than that, too, quite honestly

I may practise with some hair my friends giving me XD
She's just brought this amazing silver setharoth ( omg for terrible spelling T_T) wig and is cutting it short for a kingdom hearts cosplay.
So i'm gonna nab some of that ^_^
I may try to make a dollfie wig... oooh if i could pull it off the possibilities would be endless *twinkly eyes* *w*

Oooh! Man, yes, definitely get some of that hair if you can It's actually not too hard to work with shorter pieces of hair, either - I think I prefer it to the really long one's XP
Doll wigs would be made of love - I don't know anyone who makes them (especially in SD sized, that was the saddest thing of all!) in weird colors, and my girl really needs a bright red wig, I think XP

Awesome!! Well, I"m glad to be of help, then
Just a warning, though, if your wefts are insanely long, you'll loose about 25% of the hair from it just being pulled out normally with brushing... I just went through that today, and thought I'd mention it... I'll probably go back in and edit stuffs, but... yeah... XP
