Description
Yes! You shall be inundated with pictures from yesterday, where I got dressed up and had ~kellin take pictures of me in my dress, with one of the new hats I've been working on.Less about the hats at the moment, and some information about the dress...
This dress is a reproduction of an 1880's garment that I had to study and reproduce to a specific sized "actress" (which was myself, for this project - one of the only times we could do that!) during my final draping class a few years back.
This then made a reappearance as my wedding dress from our wedding on Halloween 2008. I knew I wanted something different, and I really loved how the dress fit me, and decided to go with it!
The whole dress is 12 yards of purple shot silk taffeta, flat lined in a brushed cotton. I cut out most of the frills of the original dress - I'm not a ruffle person for things like this, I much prefer a more streamlined simple design, and that's what I went with.
The dress itself was tagged as c.1880, and it is a "natural form" bustle dress, also known as a curiass bustle. It doesn't have the shelf in the back that you think of with bustle, instead, all of the "foof" is lower in the back, while the front is a more trimmed shape (it is fuller on me than most period outfits, though, because I'm significantly more curvy than they were back in the day XP)
Underneath, there is a petticoat, under skirt, and a 1900's corset which gives me a better shape versus period corsets for the dress. That corset is a beast - it takes my 40" waist and brings it down to something like 32" or so easily...
Other than that, I can't think of much else to say, other than a huge Thank you!! to ~kellin for taking such amazing pictures - he's starting to get good at them!

Oh, that would put a damper on things but I'm happy you did deal with it because it looks so beautiful, not to mention I love the color purple.

The dress is beautiful! I particularly love the skirt, the way it "crinkles"... wish I knew the proper terminology for it, but nevertheless, it's gorgeous!

Thank you very much
I still adore this dress, especially for the back! I don't know if there is a correct terminology for the crinkling, but I think that's just about right ((I don't think it's actual "bustling" because it's not done with cords
)

You're always welcome!
Me too! Thanks for enlightening me about the "crinkling" bit, I was curious. ((Bustling... haven't tried that yet, I should eventually!))

I think it's a very beautiful dress, though I prefer the fuller bustled Victorian styles myself. And it's my favorite color too!!

Thank you very much
It was originally supposed to be blue, and I was really upset when I got purple silk, but now, I think I really like it how it is Thank you thank you!
And, I'm working on figuring out which early bustle dress to do - not quite a shelf, more of a giant poof, but still

Purple? Blue? Heck, even green would have worked. (*Has emerald green fantasies*)
As for bustles, yes. They are essentially giant poufs. I can't sew, but I imagine they're a pain in the bumroll. *gets shot for joke* I'm usually a renaissance fan, but lately I've taken a liking to the bustled Victorian look. I have read though on a number of sites that you can somehow install ribbons to bustle up a dress. Of course the skirt is two layered. (my dream wedding dress is similar.) Then again I've seen bustles done as a drape of extra matching fabric. Argh! Too many options. I have no idea how you choose being a seamstress. Haha.

I love the back view, such great photos. And an amazing dress. Can I ask where the photos were taken?

Thank you thank you! I was so worried, because I hadn't ironed the dress (just a quick steaming) before going out for pictures, and just sitting in the car for a 5 minute drive crinkled it all back up
It's in Grant Park, in South Milwaukee, just along one of the roads - there are a lot of old walls (built during the depression) with random benches and stairways tucked in odd corners, it's so awesome to wander through

Sounds like a place I should check out..... And the dress looked fine. You want to see wrinkled that was my wedding dress.... It was awful.

You should, once the plants start blooming out - it's a really pretty park, with lots of kind of hidden gems all over the place - and, if you ever wanted to check it out, you're more than welcome to my house for a cup of tea/coffee/whatnots, as we're right up the block
I'm happy it's not just me, then - maybe it's the bane of all wedding dresses

No it's not just you... wedding dresses are evil that way! I've been wanting to come to Milwaukee to visit the domes and some of the older cemeteries... Hmm, might have to make that happen this spring

Amazing, I love that purple on you, it really is stunning! And that hat is lovely as well! I wish I could get into the whole steam-punk wear, but I don't think I could pull it off as well as you can!

I think anyone can pull it off - the trick is being a little different about it, IMO. I did a lot of historical research for the outfit (was required by the professor) and that's seemed to affect my view on Steampunk more than anything - history is amazing for neat ideas
You should try it! I just looked at your gallery, and you have some really amazing designs! I think you could do an amazing take on Steampunk!

Thank you! <3 I have a historical-costume book, maybe I should crack that sucker open! >D I would probably do a really weird version of steam-punk if I chose to, but I suppose that would be more interesting than doing "typical" steam-punk style! XD

You definitely should! It's a little stressful, but well worth it (if you don't take a wedding too seriously, at least - we didn't, and I think that's why it was so much fun!) Thank you!

Thank you very much - I originally had a little top hat with the outfit, but I like this one better
You definitely can - it's just a lot of practice! I've been doing nothing but sewing (to the detriment of my actual drawing/art skills ) for the past decade or so, so it's completely possible!
