Description Yes! You shall be inundated with pictures from yesterday, where I got dressed up and had ~kellin take pictures of me in my dress, with one of the new hats I've been working on.

Less about the hats at the moment, and some information about the dress...

This dress is a reproduction of an 1880's garment that I had to study and reproduce to a specific sized "actress" (which was myself, for this project - one of the only times we could do that!) during my final draping class a few years back.

This then made a reappearance as my wedding dress from our wedding on Halloween 2008. I knew I wanted something different, and I really loved how the dress fit me, and decided to go with it!

The whole dress is 12 yards of purple shot silk taffeta, flat lined in a brushed cotton. I cut out most of the frills of the original dress - I'm not a ruffle person for things like this, I much prefer a more streamlined simple design, and that's what I went with.

The dress itself was tagged as c.1880, and it is a "natural form" bustle dress, also known as a curiass bustle. It doesn't have the shelf in the back that you think of with bustle, instead, all of the "foof" is lower in the back, while the front is a more trimmed shape (it is fuller on me than most period outfits, though, because I'm significantly more curvy than they were back in the day XP)

Underneath, there is a petticoat, under skirt, and a 1900's corset which gives me a better shape versus period corsets for the dress. That corset is a beast - it takes my 40" waist and brings it down to something like 32" or so easily...

Other than that, I can't think of much else to say, other than a huge Thank you!! to ~kellin for taking such amazing pictures - he's starting to get good at them!

This is absolutely lovely! I wonder if you have any thoughts/suggestions/warnings/advice regarding education in sewing/design/draping... (In case it isn't obvious by my question, I should confess I know next to nothing about sewing... I have had a machine for years and years... learned to thread it and push the pedal in high school, but never actually sewed anything... Recently I've decided to sew clothes, mostly for my 2 year old daughter, despite knowing nothing... it's learn as I go through experience (many MANY mistakes) and online tutorials... (your kimono one is fantastic!!) I also purchased a cheap serger and made a dress form of my daughter (and a crappy one of myself... they say you can't do it by yourself, but technically I had my daughter help... I doubt anyone would recommend it, but I suppose it's better than nothing) and I've splurged on various feet for my machines... but beyond those splurges, money is tight... Anyway... I guess I'm asking, how far is the gap between learning as you go and getting the kind of education you have? (I'm not even remotely sure what that is by the way.) Actually, maybe you could just tell me a bit about your education... how long has it taken? Was it worth it? What has it been like? Can you do it while working part-full time as an RN and being a single mom of 2? (omg this is long! Sorry! Please feel free to disregard if this is asking too much!)

I completely love that this was your wedding dress. It looks lovely, you look lovely- everything's lovely.
Plus, I think it's great when people don't feel like they have to stick to the 'traditional' white dress/outfit and go with what really represents/works for them.

I just love it to death - I need more excuses to get dressed up and confuse people at the country club where we like to take pictures

And hats are awesome. My family was completely under-whelmed by them when I wore one for Easter, but that's okay - I love them

Aww! Thank you so much

I need an excuse to wear this more often - it's gotten significantly more comfortable to wear now that it's a bit looser, and, well, I'm less of a "DON'T LOOK AT ME!" person than I was before... ~kellin is slowly forcing that out of me by putting me in embarrassing situations

Thank you thank you thank you!

40" to a 32"? *cries* I want such a corset! I haven't seen that size since before my 3 year old was born -A-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to KairiCentatri [2010-04-05 21:17:38 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I've been that size, like, ever, since maybe I was 14 or so

But, it really is an amazing thing - not something to wear every day, but every now and again, well worth it (I'm trying to figure how to make an underbust that I can wear a bra with that does the same thing, for a more casual wear ) - they're just tricky because you can really hurt yourself if they're not fitted just right!

Aww Thank you very much~ it was a chore and a half to make the dress, since most of it is hand sewing to keep things in place, but I'm so happy I did all of that little work

taeliac In reply to khallix [2010-04-05 21:18:47 +0000 UTC]

Me too! I love purple - it was supposed to be blue (I thought someone would be snarky if I made my wedding dress purple, as every other dress I've made for myself is purple) but I'm happy with how it came out ((I ordered blue silk, but it was "royal blue" which, apparently, was purple XP))

khallix In reply to taeliac [2010-04-06 12:40:40 +0000 UTC]

Well I've heard from my cousin that this year's fashion is black in wedding dresses so.. I think purple would be much more better! And if I ever get married (which I think is impossible xD) I'd love to wear a purpe wedding dress made by you!

taeliac In reply to khallix [2010-04-06 17:35:21 +0000 UTC]

Really? That is pretty cool, actually, for black - I really love what you can do with it!

And, I would be honored to make something for you, even if it's just for fun, not necessary just a wedding

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to midgarangel [2010-04-05 21:19:50 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if I could sell them, they're a trick and a half to fit, unfortunately. Like, if they're not fit right, you can seriously hurt yourself - I would love to learn how to do them better off of measurements, though, so you never know!
