The only issue with this method of recoloring is that it has a tendency to leave the fur without any texture. You can see from the before and after that wolves have a more "fuzzy" appearance, and that likes to get lost. However, this is very helpful, and I give you a thumb-up.

Too bad this is for Gimp. I'd suggest loads of things to try in Photoshop. I don't know if Gimp has something similar to Image > Shadows/Highlights, but that is more effective than taking down the Lightness level. Changing how Shadow/Highlights affects the subject can help you keep the current shading without losing depth.

I will definitely look into that!
Usually I don't just finish here. I use curves, levels, and other things to adjust the wolf into the background better.

But I will look for something like the shadows/highlights thing and try that out. I'm still learning!

Yeah, in PS I randomly found it one day and I'm like "Oooo... what's thiiiisss." Then I fell in love. I use it more than just brightness/contrast or anything. I typically use it first because it does most of the work for me. Rendering lighting effects helps me too, but once again, I don't know what Gimp has. I tried Gimp when I lost Photoshop once. I can't do it. It burns meh. But I did try. xD

At least you tried! I tried photoshop maybe 2 years after GIMP and had the same reaction as you. They're just so different from one another. xD Perhaps one day. Photoshop has a lot of things GIMP doesn't, so I'd love to really work with it.

I have lots of tutorials bookmarked if you ever need it. It's stuff that I needed to know when I first started. I find it intuitive compared to even Paint Shop Pro, which I switched from. Back then Corel didn't own it. Alternatively I prefer Corel Draw to Adobe Illustrator. xD

Don't forget to be careful where you lighten the wolf.
Also, black fur has a slight bluish purplish tint to it. It isn't completely black and dark. I suggest using a few pictures of black wolves for reference.
But of course, this is just a rough outline of what you do in your manipulations.

Glad I could be of assistance!
Don't mention it. I know how hard it is to collect the little buggers!
Too bad you only do trades with friends.

I've tried that and it doesn't work with black. Not in GIMP anyway.

So this is how to turn a picture of a wolf from google images into a smudgy hard-to-see picture of a wolf after subjecting it to fire

Obviously you didn't read the credits. The wolf is from a stock provider here on dA.

In what situation would this ever be useful?

tahbikat In reply to arvalis [2012-03-21 01:15:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, for instance, if someone requests or commissions me to do a black wolf in a certain pose. There aren't many black wolf stock photos out there, so this would be the next best thing.
